USC Schedule Fallout Strikes from Conference Realignment

How does this potentially impact Notre Dame down the road?

It was mentioned last month that USC head football coach [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] was trying to get out of the Trojans 2024 season-opener against LSU this fall.  Although he wasn’t able to do that, he and USC were able to get out of a home-and-home they were set to play in 2025-26.

USC and Ole Miss will no longer meet for that home-and-home as cancelling the two games was something both programs mutually agreed on doing.

Although the decision isn’t overly difficult to understand it still stinks for college football fans.  [autotag]Lane Kiffin[/autotag] returning to USC where he called plays for years and was their one-time head coach (who ended their winning streak against Notre Dame in 2010).

The news here doesn’t directly impact Notre Dame as the Irish and USC remain on each other’s schedules for the foreseeable future, but it does make us wonder at least a little bit how interested Lincoln Riley would be in trying to end that tradition.

Or if other SEC teams may follow the lead of Ole Miss and get out of their already scheduled dates with Notre Dame.

USC, Ole Miss cancel home-and-home football series in 2025, 2026

USC and Ole Miss won’t meet on the gridiron. Heavy sigh.

The USC and Ole Miss football programs have canceled their home-and-home series, originally scheduled for 2025 and 2026. Lane Kiffin won’t coach against USC.

Michael Katz, a USC alumnus who covers Ole Miss sports for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, noted the Kiffin angle in his report:

“Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin served as USC’s head coach from 2010-2013, compiling a 43-28 record before being fired after five games into the 2013 season. Following his dismissal from USC, Kiffin took over as Alabama’s offensive coordinator and then as FAU’s head coach before being named Ole Miss’ head coach in December of 2019.

“Kiffin has led the Rebels to a 34-15 record in his four seasons, including the first two 10-win regular seasons in program history. Ole Miss has been to a pair of New Year’s Six games under Kiffin, including the Peach Bowl last season against Penn State. The victory over the Nittany Lions secured the first 11-win campaign in school history.”

The Trojans tried to back out of their game against LSU this season, but could not. This, on the other hand, is an arrangement Ole Miss was willing to go along with. It’s obvious that USC doesn’t want to overextend itself in nonconference scheduling, given the difficulty of Big Ten schedules.

Former Michigan State women’s basketball star rescinds transfer commitment from Ole Miss

DeeDee Hagemann won’t be transferring to Ole Miss after all

Michigan State women’s basketball lost their best player from last season to the transfer portal back in March, and it looked like DeeDee Hagemann was set to head to Ole Miss via the portal, but that decision was rescinded on Friday.

Hagemann has decommitted from Ole Miss and will now re-open her recruitment. This comes one day after she signed with a new NIL agency. As  one of the biggest names still available, she will command a high NIL payout on the open market.

Notre Dame no longer will participate in Rady Children’s Invitational

Make your plans for Vegas instead of San Diego.

When it was announced that Notre Dame would compete in a NIL-type tournament in Las Vegas this season, one thing might have been forgotten. Before the start of the past season, the Irish agreed to take part in the 2024 Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego. But that won’t be the case any longer.

With the events conflicting with each other and the money involved with the Players Era Festival, the San Diego tournament officially will not feature the Irish. They, along with Arkansas, reportedly have opted out of their obligation, which involved a $200,000 buyout provision. They have been replaced by Ole Miss and Irish ACC rival NC State. Purdue and BYU will remain part of the invitational.

The writing for this was on the wall the moment the Players Era Festival was announced. No team in the NIL era is going to turn down an opportunity to financially benefit its players. Such is the new reality of college sports.

The Texas A&M baseball team avoided a potential disastrous sweep on Sunday night at Swayze Field against SEC rival Ole Miss.

The No. 2 Aggies (42-10, 17-17 SEC) shutout the Rebels by a final score of 6-0. Texas A&M scored 3 runs in the sixth inning and 1 in each of the third, seventh and ninth.

No. 2 Texas A&M baseball team loses second straight SEC series with lopsided loss vs. Ole Miss

The sky hasn’t necessarily started falling yet but the Aggies are getting very close following their second consecutive SEC series loss.

The sky hasn’t necessarily started falling in College Station but the Texas A&M baseball team is getting very close following its second consecutive SEC series loss this weekend.

The No. 2 Aggies (41-10, 16-10 SEC) were blown out 10-2 at Ole Miss (27-23, 11-15) on Saturday night at Swayze Field. Texas A&M has now lost four of its last five conference games.

The Rebels scored 5 runs in the second inning, 3 in the fourth and 1 in the third and eighth, respectively. The Aggies plated 1 in each of the third and ninth frames. Texas A&M tallied only 5 hits on the evening.

The Aggies are now 19-21 all-time against Ole Miss. Texas A&M has lost back-to-back SEC sets and three total this season. The 8-run loss was the Aggies’ biggest of the year in the final road series of the regular season.

One of the few positives from the defeat was that graduate student designated hitter Hayden Schott extended his on-base streak to 24 games, recording 1 hit and 1 walk.

Texas A&M will attempt to avoid the sweep Sunday at 5 p.m. CST.

For the second consecutive Friday evening, the Aggies baseball team lost their SEC series opener on the road. Game 2 is Saturday at 4 p.m.

For the second consecutive Friday evening, the Texas A&M baseball team lost its SEC series opener on the road.

The No. 2 Aggies (41-9, 16-9 SEC) lost by a final score of 4-3 at Ole Miss (26-23, 10-15) to begin the weekend at Swayze Field. Texas A&M has lost three of its last four conference matchups.

With a single run scattered across the first, second and fifth innings, respectively, the Aggies led 3-2 with six outs to go. The Rebels tallied 1 in each of the second and third, then took the lead for good with 2 go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth frame.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Ryan Prager took a no decision after allowing 2 runs and striking out 10 batters over 5.2 innings. Senior LHP Evan Aschenbeck (4-1) suffered the loss after tossing 1.2 frames of relief for Prager.

Texas A&M will attempt to even the series Saturday at 4 p.m.

No. 2 Texas A&M ‘didn’t play the greatest schedule’ this regular season according to Schlossnagle

“We didn’t play the greatest schedule but we won the games,” he explained. “We’ve played below-average teams and lost to them in the past.”

Following a 16-3 win against Rice on Tuesday night at home, Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle looked ahead to the final road series of the regular season at Ole Miss this weekend, while reflecting on the year thus far.

“You’ve still gotta go on the road in the SEC that’s full of awesome SEC players and they have really good pitching in terms of the stuff that I’ve seen on television. The transfer from Duke, (Andrew) Fischer, he’s as much of an impact hitter as there is in our league, including the guys that we have on our team who have 20 homers,” Schlossnagle explained. “We’ve proven that we can win anywhere and lose anywhere. LSU wasn’t playing that great and they got it going, so we have to go play good baseball and try to find a way to win the series.

“We didn’t play the greatest schedule but we won the games. We’ve played below-average teams and lost to them in the past. It’s hard to win all these games, the game is not built for that. Especially the teams that we get to play in the state.”

‘The SEC is hard’: Texas A&M freshman phenom Gavin Grahovac previews final road series at Ole Miss

“I know they’re a good team. A lot of guys on their team can hit. We’ve gotta come out, play our game, hit, throw strikes and play defense.”

The No. 2 Texas A&M baseball team completed an undefeated non-conference schedule on Tuesday evening with a victory versus Rice at Blue Bell Park.

After the win, freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac spoke to the media and looked ahead to the final road series of the regular season at SEC rival Ole Miss.

“I know they’re a good team. A lot of guys on their team can hit so we’ve gotta come out, play our game, hit, throw strikes and play defense. Every weekend is the same, you’ve gotta go out there and compete,” Grahovac said. “I knew that we had won a lot of games in non-conference but (being unbeaten) is huge for us. The more games we win means the better record that we have and the farther we can go on. As long as we can continue to do that, obviously we want to win every game in the SEC but like we’ve talked about, the SEC is hard, every team is good.

“As long as we can continue to win is a huge confidence boost for us, so we have to keep it going the next few weekends.”

‘My question to the fans’: Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle has a query for the 12th Man

“First time we have lost back-to-back games,” he said. “If we do that a month from now, our season is over. Yeah, I reminded them of that.”

As the regular season begins to wind down, the No. 2 Texas A&M baseball team has a home game against Rice and a three-game SEC series at Ole Miss this week.

Aggies coach Jim Schlossnagle began looking ahead Monday during a discussion with TexAgs.

“My question to the fans is: What constitutes a good season? Can you have a brutal regular season, be the 64th team in and win the national championship… Is that the best team in program history? It’s tournament sports. I am not saying I am right and you are wrong or vice versa,” Schlossnagle said. “At the end of the day, we want to get in a regional and do well there. I would love to host. Awesome. Right now, I will take the No. 4 seed in Anchorage with our team healthy. I will take our chances. There will be ups and downs. We could have more downs ahead of us. Who knows?

“First time we have lost back-to-back games. If we do that a month from now, our season is over. Yeah, I reminded them of that… Guess who had a winning record against the teams who played for a national championship last year? Texas A&M. We had the most brutal pitching staff in school history. We had awesome kids. Austin Bost has the most unlucky year that I have ever seen. We were 4-3 against Florida and LSU.

“This upper echelon of college baseball, I am telling you, you just have to survive it and be healthy. We have to get to the point where we get to our regional, and our team is healthy.”
