Ole Miss vs LSU Game Preview

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The offense isn’t getting the national love last year’s version received, but that’s because 1) Tennessee is sucking all of the oxygen out of the SEC room and 2) no one has seen what this thing can really do.

Kentucky – maybe – was the only time America made Ole Miss football appointment watching without a slew of compelling games on the slate so far. However, it’s got a tougher ground attack than the 2021 version, there’s an excellent balance, and the defense is holding up just fine.

LSU doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush, and that’s a killer against this bunch. Give Jaxson Dart time to operate, and the third-best team in college football on third downs will keep the chains moving.

The Rebel offensive line has been fantastic so far, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why LSU Will Win

Again, Kentucky was the one good game on the slate, and Ole Miss came up with a season-low 399 yards and needed a huge defensive break late to pull off the 22-19 win – and that was at home.

The toughest road game so far was Georgia Tech? Vanderbilt?

LSU might have been blasted by Tennessee 40-13 the last time out at home – and it was a day game, too – but it’s not like the Rebels have been stress-tested yet outside of that UK game.

The Tiger passing game has been working with 300 yards or more in three of the last four games, the ground attack is good enough, and the offense should be on the field for close to 35 minutes because …

What’s Going To Happen

LSU will be great on third downs.

When did Ole Miss have an issue defensively on third down? Take a guess – Kentucky. That was the only time it allowed an offense to hit more than 42%, and LSU is converting at a 48% rate.

However, that might not matter if the Rebel running game works like it’s supposed to. It won’t get to the 448 yards of last week, but it’ll push for 200 yards and allow over five yards per carry.

It’s hardly going to be easy, but Ole Miss will pull it out on a Jonathan Cruz field goal.

Ole Miss vs LSU Game Preview

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Ole Miss has just enough defense to keep this close.

It might not be a rock at stopping teams from hitting their shots lately – yeah, sort of the whole point of playing defense – but it’s able to generate a whole slew of steals, points off the turnovers, and it should be able to keep this in the 60s.

LSU is a turnover machine.

It might be even better than Ole Miss at forcing mistakes – it leads the nation in steals – but it give the ball away in bunches. It only turned it over nine times against TCU, but lost to the hard-nosed defensive team. Before that, it got off the bus with 15 giveaways.

Ole Miss has to own the glass, make LSU try to shoot threes, and never, ever miss an opportunity because …

Why LSU Will Win

Ole Miss stalls too much.

It’s not awful from the field, but it’s not hitting the threes lately. It’s fantastic on the free throw line, but it needs to generate more attempts.

LSU should be able to make up for its desire to seemingly foul everyone with lots and lots of pressure – it’s a wee bit of a high risk, high reward defense – and the defense that’s second in the nation in field goal percentage allowed should be able to clean up.

Ole Miss isn’t great from the field, and it’s not great on the offensive glass. That’s a bad combination against the Tigers.

What’s Going To Happen

Be somewhat stunned if this is any sort of a shootout.

LSU just couldn’t get going against TCU in an odd loss, and it’ll sputter at times against the Ole Miss defense. However, it’s better at getting on a roll from three, and it’s better defensively at keeping limited offenses from going off.

Predicting the outcome of each SEC football game in Week 8

It’s going to be a relatively quiet week in the conference.

Coming off a week with the virtual SEC East championship game with Georgia and Kentucky, it’s going to be a relatively quiet week in the conference. Only nine teams are going to be in action (Arkansas has a nonconference game) and the other five will take their bye week.

LSU’s trip to Oxford to face No. 12 Ole Miss will be the highlight matchup as CBS is in town. Former quarterback Eli Manning will have his jersey number retired as well.

A cross-division “rivalry” between Texas A&M and South Carolina takes place, while an actual rivalry in Alabama-Tennessee is also on the schedule. Both will be a part of the night slate.

Here is the full SEC schedule for Week 8. All times are central.

  • Arkansas PB at Arkansas at 11 a.m.
  • LSU at No. 12 Ole Miss at 2:30 a.m.
  • Mississippi State at Vanderbilt at 3:00 a.m.
  • Tennessee at No. 4 Alabama at 6:00 p.m.
  • South Carolina at No. 17 Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m.

An exciting slate is ahead of us! Here are my predictions for every single SEC game on the schedule Saturday:

Kickoff time, TV channel announced for LSU vs Ole Miss

LSU will play on CBS for the first time this season against Ole Miss.

LSU will be playing on CBS for the first time this season.

LSU goes on the road to take on No. 13 Ole Miss next Saturday, October 23rd. Kickoff time is 2:30 p.m. per the Southeastern Conference.

LSU is currently 3-4, 1-3 in the SEC, whereas the 13th ranked Rebels are 4-1, 1-1 in the SEC. LSU leads the all-time series 64-40-4. The Bayou Bengals have won the last five contests and 15 of the last 20.

Last season, LSU won in a shootout with Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss 53-48. Max Johnson accounted for five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) and forced Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral into five interceptions. This season, it would take a miracle for this LSU secondary to force the current Heisman favorite into that many mistakes.

The SEC tweeted out the announcement as they do each week.

Ole Miss (16-10) vs LSU (16-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Ole Miss has turned it on with a good late season run winning eight of its last ten games including an easy 76-59 win over South Carolina in the SEC Tournament second round.

There are a whole lot of issues with this team, but it’s been shooting great over the last month and the defense has been able to get just enough on the outside to keep slipping by.

The Rebels haven’t allowed four of the last six teams to get to 30% from three, and LSU is a bit streaky from the outside. On the other side, the Ole Miss offense has been stronger, the offensive rebounding more consistent, and the passing better as the team seems to have found its groove.

Why LSU Will Win

LSU might not be all that consistent, but when the offense clicks, forget it.

In a perfect world, the Tigers make this a bit of a track meet and this gets played in the 80s. Ole Miss has the ability to keep up – it went on a nice run in February when everything worked – but LSU is better at attacking and shooting volume threes to crank up the production.

The Tigers won 75-61 in early January when the offense was terrific fro the field and Ole Miss couldn’t keep up.

What’s Going To Happen

Ole Miss is dangerous, but LSU will love to get this going and make this a fun up-and-down game. The Rebels will throw a slew of haymakers, but LSU will pull away late helped by a few defensive stops from three.
