Mike Gundy’s reported contract standoff with Oklahoma State, explained

Breaking down what reportedly happened between Oklahoma State and Cowboys football coach Mike Gundy.

Welcome to FTW Explains: A guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. You may have heard about Mike Gundy clashing with his employer, Oklahoma State, and wondering what is going on. That’s OK because we’re here to help.

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy was in a standoff with the school over his salary and contract that seemingly resolved itself very quickly throughout the last couple days, according to multiple reports Friday and Saturday.

Oklahoma State also reportedly wasn’t ruling out firing Gundy if the coach was unwilling to compromise with the school.

The Cowboys have plenty of reasons to be less than pleased with Gundy, especially after they finished the 2024 season with an abysmal 3-9 record and zero (0) Big 12 victories. Ranked No. 17 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll, Oklahoma State won its first three games against South Dakota State, Arkansas and Tulsa before going on to lose the nine and closing with a 52-0 loss to Colorado.

So, not a great season for Gundy and co., and it sure seems like Oklahoma State leaders aren’t thrilled. So let’s break down what reportedly happened in the recent stalemate between the football coach and the school.

Reports Oklahoma State asked Mike Gundy to take a pay cut

The Oklahoman reported that the Oklahoma A&M Colleges Board of Regents met for more than two hours on Friday morning, and “the focus of the meeting was believed to be focused on Gundy and his contract status in the aftermath of a 3-9 season the struggles of which were exacerbated by Gundy’s comments about unhappy fans.” But the meeting ended without any action being taken.

“We have a plan,” Board chair Jimmy Harrel told the media as he left the meeting room, via The Oklahoman. “As soon as we have it tied down, we’ll inform you of it.”

Oklahoma State asked Gundy to accept a restructured contract and met with officials to talk about his future with the Cowboys, according to a report Friday from ESPN’s Pete Thamel citing anonymous sources. He was under contract through the 2028 season, and the proposed restructured agreement included a significant pay cut and decrease in his buyout.

Not only did Oklahoma State reportedly want to change the terms, but it also might have been a borderline ultimatum.

If Gundy didn’t agree to the restructured contract, there were talks of firing him for cause, though it’s not clear what may warrant being fired for cause, Thamel reported.

Mike Gundy agreed to a restructured contract with Oklahoma State

By Saturday, this whole mess was reportedly resolved.

Gundy and Oklahoma State reached an agreement on a restructured contract, meaning he’ll continue coaching the Cowboys, ESPN’s Chris Low reported Saturday citing sources.

More via ESPN:

As part of the restructuring of Gundy’s contract, his $7.75 million annual salary will be reduced to be redistributed as part of revenue sharing with players, and his buyout will be reduced, sources told ESPN. Gundy would have been owed $25.3 million had he been fired without cause.

Has Oklahoma State said anything official about Mike Gundy’s new contract?

Other than Harrel’s comments following the Oklahoma A&M Colleges Board of Regents meeting Friday, Oklahoma State hasn’t really commented on the situation.

However, the Cowboys had already fired their coordinators. As The Oklahoman reported:

OSU dismissed offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo on Wednesday, but Friday’s special meeting was posted at approximately the same time “for the purpose of considering evaluation/assessment and other information relevant to the employment of Oklahoma State University football staff.”

What is Mike Gundy’s salary and buyout in 2024?

For the 2024 season, Gundy had the 17th-largest college football coaching salary at $7,750,000, according to USA TODAY Sports’ database.

Prior to him and the Cowboys agreeing to new contract terms going forward, his buyout in 2024 was $25,359,375, which is the 27th-largest.

What did Mike Gundy say about Oklahoma State fans?

Gundy isn’t one known to hold back, and he criticized fans during a press conference in November, saying “most people are weak” and said his critics are people who “can’t pay their own bills.”

He said, via Yahoo Sports:

“…in most cases, the people who are negative and voicing their opinion are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills. They’re not taking care of themselves. They’re not taking care of their own family. They’re not taking care of their own job but they have an obligation to speak out and complain about others because it makes them feel better. But then in the end when they go to bed at night, they’re the same failure that they were before they said anything negative about anybody else.”

Gundy ultimately apologized for his comments, but this was hardly his first controversy.

This summer at Big 12 media day, Gundy was criticized for appearing to make light of drinking and driving, saying: “I’ve probably done that a thousand times in my life.” He later clarified the point he was attempting to express.

In another incident in 2020, Gundy agreed to take a $1 million pay cut and a reduced buyout after a public clash with players — who were threatening to boycott playing — over the coach wearing a far-right TV network, One America News T-shirt. In 2021, the school announced his salary and “perpetual five-year contract” were restored, ESPN reported.

Gundy has also previously been accused by former players of using the N-word.

How long has Mike Gundy been Oklahoma State’s football coach?

Gundy just finished coaching his 20th season with Oklahoma State, his alma mater, and after agreeing to a restructured contract, he’ll return for No. 21. As the Cowboys’ winningest coach, Gundy has a 169-88 record in 20 seasons, which included a 2011 Big 12 championship.

However, with the 3-9 finish this season, Gundy’s streak of leading the team to 18 straight bowl games was snapped.

Oklahoma Sooners flip quarterback prospect away from Oklahoma State

Oklahoma Sooners flipped 2025 quarterback prospect Jett Niu from Oklahoma State on the first day of the early signing period.

Just a few days on the job, and offensive coordinator [autotag]Ben Arbuckle[/autotag] is making his presence felt. On the first day of the [autotag]early signing period[/autotag], the Oklahoma Sooners added quarterback [autotag]Jett Niu[/autotag], who signed with the Sooners Wednesday.

Niu was originally committed to Appalachian State before flipping to Oklahoma State in September. Niu received an offer from Arbuckle and Washington State back in January, and now the Sooners have added the high-upside quarterback to their [autotag]2025 recruiting class[/autotag].

Niu has good size for the position at 6-foot-2 and is an accurate passer. He throws with anticipation and does a great job targeting the middle of the field. He’s got a quick release. Niu is a good athlete who displays the ability to extend plays and pick up yards in the scramble game.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy ducks interview after run-in with cattle

Mike Gundy came out on the losing end of a battle with one of his cattle

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy is never dull. He always makes news whether deliberately or by accident.

The by accident portion took on a new meaning this weekend.

Gundy didn’t make his usual in-person appearance on a show. The reason? The Cowboys coach says he ha a run-in with one of his cattle and it left him with a mess of an eye that was bloody and not fit for public view.

Gundy and Oklahoma State are 3-3 having lost their last three games. He will be facing BYU on Friday in a Big 12 game. The Cougars are undefeated in six games and have outscored their opponents by 108 points.

Why Oklahoma State at Kansas State is can’t miss Big 12 action

Oklahoma State and Kansas State can’t afford another loss in conference play, making this Big 12 battle a must watch game.

The Big 12 conference game everyone will be talking about at the water cooler on Monday is between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Kansas State Wildcats. You’ll want to have your TV set to ESPN when they play at 12:00 PM ET on Saturday because, in the modern college football landscape, OSU vs KSU will become a de facto elimination game.

Oklahoma State and Kansas State are coming off of shocking losses which rattled the Big 12 landscape last weekend. Oklahoma State fought back at the end, but they got throttled for more than three quarters by the Utah Utes last week in Stillwater. Oklahoma State was, previously, the betting favorite, out of teams from the “old” Big 12, to challenge for the conference title in Arlington.

Kansas State went to BYU as a heavy favorite, lost by double digits, and gave up the most embarrassing punt return of the year a defense could imagine giving up. It was not the Week 4 anyone had drawn up for the Wildcats, who also entered the year with a very realistic chance to play for the conference championship.

The good news for both squads? Unlike their opponents last week,  this game has absolutely nothing to do with the state of Utah.

Oklahoma State and Kansas State have their eyes set on a College Football Playoff berth, but the only way to control that future is by winning this game. It is hard to imagine either team makes it to a conference title game with multiple Big 12 losses, and it is increasingly unlikely that three Big 12 teams make the CFP. Thus, it appears there is no path to the College Football Playoff without a trip to that title game.

Both teams hang their hat on the run game. OSU does it with Ollie Gordon, likely to be the first running back taken in the 2025 NFL Draft, and KSU does it with a combination of young, highly touted quarterback Avery Johnson (one of the highest-ranked recruits to ever commit to KSU), and the RBU duo of DJ Giddens and Dylan Edwards.

Parker’s Pick: Kansas State. While their result was more shocking a week ago, being at home for a “get-right” game is a significant advantage.

4 pettiest moments from college football Week 2: Auburn (and Paul Finebaum) are down bad

And Lane Kiffin makes an appearance, because of course

Week 2 of college football always feels a bit less petty than Week 1.

It’s not Week 2’s fault. When fans have all offseason to prepare for the first game of the year, there’s always going to be a bit more smack talk — and a lot more comeuppance.

Never fear, Week 2 this season wasn’t totally devoid of pettiness. And a lot of that has to do with a few SEC teams learning they play some dang good football out West, too.

But we begin in Kentucky, where another white out game has been ruined by the visiting team.

Eastern Kentucky tries (and fails) to ruin Western Kentucky’s white out

This was a very good try by Eastern Kentucky after Miami (FL) successfully pulled off this trick in Week 1 against Florida. However, unlike Florida, Western Kentucky’s white out went on as planned. Also unlike Florida, the Hilltoppers went on to smack their in-state opponent, 31-0.

Then they got to really rub it in.

EKU falls to 0-2 by a combined score of 87-7. Woof.

Arkansas’ Marquise Robinson “domination” talk backfires at Oklahoma State

Remember a year ago when South Alabama shockingly upset Oklahoma State 33-7 in Stillwater? Marquise Robinson does. The defensive back had two solo tackles and an interception for the Jaguars. So after transferring to Arkansas for the 2024 season, he was all amped up for another trip to Stillwater.

“I feel like when we got back this time it’s gonna be a domination,” Robinson said leading up to the game.

You know who else remembers that game? Everyone in Stillwater. And they heard Robinson’s words, too. Maybe if Arkansas had played him, the Razorbacks wouldn’t have choked away a 14-point lead at halftime. Instead, the Cowboys won 39-31 in double overtime and quarterback Alan Bowman got to throw Robinson’s words right back in his face.

Auburn and Paul Finebaum get a taste of California love

The California Golden Bears arrived in Auburn as 10.5-point underdogs and left with one of the most satisfying wins of the season so far.

Not just because the ACC school (still weird!) forced five turnovers while out-gaining the Tigers, 332 yards to 286. Not just because Cal held Auburn to two scores in the 21-14 victory. But because the typical SEC elitests never even believed Cal could compete in this one.

Whoops!

And, naturally, Lane Kiffin got in on the fun.

ASU rings the bell after beating Mississippi State

Speaking of former Pac-12 teams asserting their dominance over the SEC, Arizona State — picked to finish last in the Big 12 — couldn’t wait to troll Mississippi State after picking up a 30-23 victory in Tempe.

No cowbells necessary in the desert. Just victory bells. And also a nice reminder that before we knew them as the Sun Devils, Arizona State’s team in the 1920s were officially recognized as the Bulldogs — 40 years or so before MSU changed to that name.

Which Big 12 teams are College Football Playoff contenders heading into Week 2?

Take a look at the potential College Football Playoff teams from the Big 12 heading into Week 2.

As we head into Week 2 of the College Football season, all eyes are on the potential playoff teams. With 12 teams heading to the newly expanded College Football Playoffs, it makes for some interesting results outside of the top few teams in the country.

Week 2 has some fun games from the Big 12 on the calendar. Here are the potential Big 12 College Football Playoff teams as we head into Week 2:

Utah Utes

Utah looked good in their opener. Sure, it was against Southern Utah, but they were solid from start to finish. The best news for Kyle Whittingham was seeing his quarterback Cam Rising look sharp.  His connection with Dijon Stanley is going to be one to watch all season long.

Utah will play the first Big 12 game of the season in Week 2 as they take on Baylor. The Utes are 11th in the latest Associated Press poll, up one spot from last week.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

Ollie Gordon made his presence felt in the first game of the season with three rushing touchdowns. The only legitimate candidate to win the Heisman from the running back position is going to be given the rock early and often this season.

Quarterback Alan Bowman was also strong with three passing touchdowns in the win. The Cowboys sit at 16th in the Associated Press poll. Oklahoma State will look to make it 2-0 on the season as they host the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday.

Kansas State Wildcats

The Wildcats made quick and easy work of Tennessee-Martin. Quarterback Avery Johnson is going to be tough to slow down with his ability to throw the football and also run with it. He finished with 153 passing yards and 37 on the ground in the blowout.

Kansas State is 17th, just behind Oklahoma State in the Associated Press poll. The Wildcats are on the road at Tulane on Saturday. The Green Wave won their opener a week ago as well.

Kansas Jayhawks

Jalen Daniels only had to throw the ball 15 times in Kansas’ first game, a win over Lindenwood. Devin Neal was the star of the show, as he rushed eight times for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas has a ton of returning talent from last season. The Fighting Illini of Illinois will give the Jayhawks quite the battle in Week 2 on Saturday night. Kansas sits at 19th in the latest AP poll.

Arizona Wildcats

The Wildcats put up one of the most impressive offensive performances in Week 1, dropping 61 points on New Mexico. Noah Fifita was strong with 422 passing yards, most going to receiver Tetairoa McMillan, who recorded 304 of those yards.

The Wildcats heated up late last season, and it seems they are not going to skip a beat in 2024. Arizona is ranked 20th in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Wildcats will host Northern Arizona on Saturday.

Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa State was not super strong on the offensive side in Week 1, but the defense made up for it. They allowed just three points in the win over North Dakota. The offense will be tested again this week, as they take on one of the best defensive teams in college football in Iowa.  Rocco Becht is not to be blamed for the slow offense, going 20 of 26 for 267 yards and two scores in the game. The Cyclones are fourth in receiving votes.

The best Week 2 college football matchups in the Big 12 conference

Highlighting four of the best Big 12 matchups in Week 2 of the college football season.

The page has turned from Week 1 to Week 2 of the college football season. Last week was fun, but this week seemingly can be even more fun.

Some great games on tap, with the Big 12 going toe to toe with several of the other top conferences in college football.

Let’s take a look at the best college football games for Week 2 from the Big 12 conference:

Arkansas Razorbacks at Oklahoma State Cowboys

The Arkansas Razorbacks will come to Stillwater following their 70-0 thrashing over Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Fools gold for the Razorbacks, who are projected no better than the middle of the pack in the tough SEC.

Arkansas running back Ja’Quinden Jackson may pose some problems for the Cowboys’ defense in this one, but he is no Ollie Gordon. This should be the second straight game Gordon is the best player on the field. The stud running back accounted for three of the Cowboys’ touchdowns in the 24-point win over South Dakota State.

This should be an interesting game between two power conference programs, but playing in Stillwater could be the deciding factor.

Iowa State Cyclones at Iowa Hawkeyes

The first team to 20 points wins this one? The Iowa State Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeyes both played a very defensive game last week. Iowa State allowed just a field goal in the win over North Dakota. Iowa allowed no points against Illinois State.

Iowa scored 40 in the game, but for the most part, the offense was not great. Iowa State struggled offensively, scoring just 21 points in the game.

The Hawkeyes won the matchup last season in Ames. There is one thing on the Cyclones’ mind when this game gets going. That is revenge. Fun in the heartland on Saturday.

Baylor Bears at Utah Utes

The first Big 12 conference game of the 2024 season. The Baylor Bears were impressive winners in Week 1. It was a much-needed blowout win against Tarleton State. Now, the work needs to get started, as a big-time underdog on the road.

Utah was really good in Week 1 as well. Cam Rising was strong and looks like he could contend as one of the best quarterbacks in the conference. The game being played in Salt Lake City is a big deal. Despite not being conference mates, these two teams played a season ago in a game the Utes won, 20-13.

Kansas Jayhawks at Illinois Fighting Illini

This game could be the game of the week in college football. Kansas beat up on Illinois a season ago. The fans in Champaign are expecting different this season under head coach Brett Bielema. But, in the end, the Jayhawks should win the talent differentiation.

Jalon Daniels is back and is healthy. Devin Neal is a beast on the offensive side as well, and the Jayhawks defense is ready to fly around. It’s been a long time since Kansas beat a power conference team on the road, outside of the Big 12. That should change Saturday in Champaign.

Ollie Gordon starts Heisman campaign with strong opener

Ollie Gordon showed off his skill with three touchdowns in Oklahoma State’s season opening win over South Dakota State.

Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys heard all offseason about the challenge they would face in Week 1 of the season. The South Dakota State Jackrabbits were going to give them all they could handle in the season opener. The Cowboys put a stop to that with a double-digit halftime lead and 21 third-quarter points. The biggest plus – Ollie Gordon showed why he is a legitimate Heisman candidate.

Gordon put on a show, with 27 rushing attempts, 104 rushing yards, and two touchdowns on the ground. He also caught four passes for 42 yards and a touchdown as well. It was the Gordon show for the Cowboys, and it wasn’t Alan Bowman struggled under center.

Here is one of Gordon’s most impressive runs of the day, which got him into the end zone to make it 17-3 Cowboys:

https://twitter.com/UnnecRoughness/status/1829957620792508838

Bowman threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over in the game, and neither did his teammates, a clean game for the 17th-ranked Cowboys.

Gordon is coming off a 2023 season where he rushed 258 times for over 1,600 yards. Gordon scored 20 touchdowns on the ground, and another one via the air in 2023. He has over 2,100 total rushing yards for the Cowboys in his career.

The next opponent for Oklahoma State is the Arkansas Razorbacks. They will host the Hogs on Saturday, and then play their first road game at Tulsa on September 14th. The Cowboys have a massive Big 12 affair on September 21st against Utah.
