The No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) and No. 4 Texas Longhorns (5-0, 2-0) renew their age-old rivalry Saturday. Kickoff from Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, is at noon ET (ABC).  Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Oklahoma vs. Texas odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The OU-UT rivalry — they’ve played in the Cotton Bowl every year since 1929 — dates all the way back to 1900. In 118 all-time series games, Texas leads 63-50-5. Oklahoma had won 4 in a row in this series until falling 49-0 in last year’s game. The shutout was the first in the series since 2004.

Texas clocked a 40-14 win over Kansas last Saturday, covering as a 16.5-point favorite. A UT offense ranked 17th in the nation (478.4 YPG) cranked out 661 yards against an upstart Jayhawk team which had been 4-0 until the rout in Austin. In last year’s rout over the Sooners, UT scored in every quarter and outgained OU 585 yards to 195.

The Sooners are No. 12 and the Longhorns are No. 4 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Oklahoma vs. Texas picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 31, Oklahoma 28

Moneyline

Give Oklahoma a near-one-third probability to win this contest outright. The Sooners are the lean, but only an actionable one north of +200.

PASS.

Against the spread

The Sooners have played the lesser of these two schedules, but 2nd-year coach Brent Venables has the OU defense performing much better through 5 games this fall.

Oklahoma has allowed just 3.2 yards per carry; look for a contest with both teams struggling to run the ball. Both teams are above-average in producing explosive plays in passing-down situations, but the OU defense has been more adept at creating some havoc plays.

Expect the Sooners to have a good enough chance of hanging around with a 3-point deficit and to want to get a measure of retribution after last year’s embarrassment, which was in large measure due to injuries at the quarterback position.

 BACK OKLAHOMA +5.5 (-110).

Over/Under

Peg the number here as a fair one. PASS.

Oklahoma vs. Texas odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Oklahoma vs. Texas odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

It’s the 117th edition of the Red River Showdown between the No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big-12) and No. 23 Texas Longhorns (4-1, 2-0). Kickoff is set for Saturday at noon ET from Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Below, we look at the Oklahoma vs. Texas odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings per the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Texas is on a roll behind an average of 53.3 points per game over its last three games. RB Bijan Robinson leads a Longhorn rushing attack that’s fifth in the nation with an average of 268.8 yards per game, while QB Casey Thompson has an 8/3 TD/INT ratio over that span. Texas enters on a three-game win streak since its Week 2 dud at Arkansas that it lost 41-20.

Oklahoma has an unblemished record, but four of its five wins were decided by 7 or fewer points. The typically-elite Sooner offense has been just “good” under QB Spencer Rattler, whose 7.9 yards per attempt (52nd in the nation) has doused some preseason Heisman hype. The Sooners have picked up the slack defensively by allowing just 19.0 points per game (32nd nationally).

Oklahoma vs. Texas odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 38, Oklahoma 31

Money line

How long can Oklahoma continue to hang on by a thread? It has razor-thin wins over Kansas State (37-31), West Virginia (16-13), Nebraska (23-16) and Tulane (40-35) on account of its offensive struggles.

Texas has covered in all three of its games since naming Thompson its starting QB after that Week 2 loss at Arkansas.

The Sooners have won the last three games between these two, but most signs point to that changing course this year. Take TEXAS (+135) to win straight up with odds.

Against the spread

Since we like the Longhorns to win straight up, PASS against the spread and take Texas on the money line.

Over/Under

Both teams are 3-2 on the Over/Under this year, and for all of Texas’ recent offensive success, it gets countered a bit by Oklahoma’s struggles to score.

We’ll hedge that Oklahoma picks up the pace and takes this OVER 64.5 (-108) as well.

Oklahoma at Texas: Three things to know

  1. Texas head coach Shaka Smart announced on Twitter Monday that he tested positive for COVID-19, and will be in isolation from the team as it plays its first game in 10 days. The previous two games – at Iowa State last Wednesday and at TCU Saturday – were postponed because of COVID-19 issues within opponents’ programs. Texas’ last outing was an 82-67 home win vs. Kansas State Jan. 16. It failed to cover as a 16.5-point favorite but rebounded from its first Big 12 loss of the season (79-77 to then-No. 15 Texas Tech Jan. 13). Junior G Andrew Jones’ 14.4 PPG leads four Longhorns in double figures.
  2. Oklahoma upset then-No. 9 Kansas 75-68 Saturday for a third win a row. The Sooners, who were 1-point home underdogs, trailed 52-51 with 9:29 to go but outscored the Jayhawks 24-16 down the stretch. Senior G Austin Reaves tallied 11 of his 16 points in the final 5:59. Sophomore G De’Vion Harmon finished with a game-high 22 points, including 4 3-pointers, and the Sooners shot 18-for-22 from the free-throw line. Reaves leads OU in points (15.2 per game), rebounds (5.1 RPG) and assists (5.2 APG).
  3. The rivals split their two meetings last season with the road teams prevailing as underdogs. Texas won at Oklahoma 52-51 in March when now-senior G Matt Coleman III banked a 3-pointer off the glass with 0.04 seconds left after OU missed two free throws. The Sooners, behind a second-half 11-2 run, claimed a 72-62 road victory Jan. 8, 2020.

Oklahoma at Texas: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Texas 70, Oklahoma 67

Money line (ML)

AVOID. Texas will improve to 5-1 in its last six home games in the series, but the -200 price is too chalky.

Against the spread (ATS)

OKLAHOMA +4.5 (-110) is the worth backing, getting the nod because:

  • Texas will miss coach Smart.
  • Oklahoma is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games.
  • Texas will be a bit rusty after 9 days off.
  • Texas is 1-3 ATS in its last 4 games.

ATS: Oklahoma 8-5 | Texas 6-7

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 143.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Oklahoma’s defense yields 64.7 PPG in conference games to rank second in the Big 12; Texas is fourth at 70.2 PPG.

The Sooners are also 2-8 vs. the O/U in their last 10 games. Saturday’s 75-68 victory over the Jayhawks snapped a 4-game Under streak.

The Longhorns enter on a 6-game Over run, but the Sooners’ defense will be the best they’ve faced to date. Plus, only four of the Longhorns’ last 10 games have reached 144 total combined points.

O/U records: Oklahoma 5-8 | Texas 8-5
