Oklahoma’s Emma Hawkins named Big 12 co-offensive player of the week

At the center of Oklahoma’s 2-0 start to the season, Emma Hawkins was named Big 12 co-offensive player of the week.

It’s been a thunderous start to the Matt Mott era in Norman. The Oklahoma Sooners women’s soccer team is off to a 2-0 start, having outscored Tulsa and Oral Roberts to the tune of 10-2.

At the center of the Sooners offensive attack is redshirt senior Emma Hawkins. After only the fourth three-goal game in program history in the season-opening 6-0 win over Tulsa, Hawkins added two more on Sunday to give her five goals in the opening week of action.

For her efforts, Hawkins was named Big 12 co-offensive player of the week alongside Texas’ Trinity Byars.

The Sooners have been relentless in their offensive attack through the first two games of the season, and Hawkins has been tremendous, finishing around the net. She’s shown great touch and timing, finishing through the air on headers as well as collecting loose balls in the box for goals.

Hawkins is on a tear to start the 2023 campaign. Her five goals through two games is nearly as many as she scored in 18 games in 2022 when she rallied six goals.

It’s been a great start for the Sooners under new head coach Matt Mott. His system has brought a fun and exciting pace of play to Oklahoma Soccer. Early in the 2023 season, Emma Hawkins has taken advantage of the offensive pace the Sooners are setting.

Oklahoma will be back in action Thursday night in Norman at Jack Crain Field at 8 pm CT. The game can be streamed live on SoonerVision on ESPN+.

5 takeaways from OU Women’s Soccer season opening 6-0 win over Tulsa

It was a phenomenal start to the season for Oklahoma Women’s Soccer. Here are 5 takeaways from the 6-0 win.

It was a fantastic debut for Matt Mott as head coach of the Oklahoma Women’s Soccer team. The Sooners rolled to a 6-0 win over Tulsa on Thursday night at John Crain Field.

A year ago, Oklahoma went 0-2-1 to start the season in their first three games and were outscored 9-3 in the process. With their offensive eruption against the Golden Hurricane, you can bet they won’t be outscored like that in their first three games this season.

“Overall, the team played really well against a good Tulsa tonight,” Head coach Matt Mott had to say after the win. “They came in here and fought us early on. When we got that first goal, it was huge for us, then as the game went on, I think we grew more into the game and realized what we were trying to do and were pretty dangerous all night.”

After stemming an early push from Tulsa, Oklahoma settled in and exploded offensively. The Matt Mott era is off to a great start in Norman.

Here are five takeaways from the 6-0 season-opening win.
