Keyontae Johnson to participate in All-Star weekend for G League tournament

Keyontae Johnson to participate in All-Star weekend for G League tournament.

The NBA announced its player pool for the 2024 All-Star weekend G League Up Next Game, and Oklahoma City Thunder two-way rookie Keyontae Johnson was one of 28 participants.

In 21 games with the OKC Blue, Johnson has averaged 20 points on 53.3% shooting and 6.9 rebounds. The 23-year-old has appeared in six games for the Thunder.

“He’s grown a lot as a player,” Blue head coach Kameron Woods said on the selection. “For him to be recognized, to have a chance to play in it, that would be amazing.”

Woods, who’s in his second season as the Blue head coach, was also supportive of the G League tournament concept, stating it aligns with its experimental history.

“I think the league as a whole being kind of experimental with rules and different things like that are good. I think they’re good challenges for coaches,” Woods said. “They’re good challenges for players because they’re different. And that falls in that category. I don’t really know what’s going to come out of it but I know it’ll be good for whoever’s in it.

“And you know, all the experimental rules they do, all the things that are unique to the league, I think are unique for the coaches and everybody that’s a part of it as well. So I think all those things are good.”

The all-star event will feature four teams of seven players competing in a single-elimination tournament. Each team will be coached by a G League head coach. Players will be drafted by four social media influencers.

Tre Mann recalled from G League’s OKC Blue

The Thunder recalled Tre Mann from the G League’s OKC Blue.

The Oklahoma City Thunder recalled third-year guard Tre Mann from the G League’s OKC Blue on Friday.

This comes after a one-game assignment for Mann. In the Blue’s win over the Mexico City Capitanes on Wednesday, he tallied 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting, 2-of-8 from 3, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

In his third season, Mann has been on the outside of OKC’s rotation due to its guard depth. He has appeared in 13 games and is averaging 9.2 minutes.

Despite this, Mann continues to be a supportive teammate and has enjoyed being part of the first-place Thunder by making the best of a less-than-ideal situation.

Tre Mann assigned to G League’s OKC Blue

Tre Mann assigned to G League’s OKC Blue.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Tuesday night that they had  assigned third-year guard Tre Mann to the G League’s OKC Blue.

In his third season, the 22-year-old has averaged career lows across the board. He has appeared in just 13 games this season, averaging 9.2 minutes.

Mann has received the short end of the stick with OKC’s guard depth. The Thunder are deep at the backcourt spots, which means he’s had a hard time finding consistent playing time.

With the Blue — who are set to play on Wednesday — Mann will have a chance to get some extensive in-game reps. With his time with the Thunder likely near its end, there’s a real possibility Mann is moved by the trade deadline.

Ousmane Dieng assigned to G League’s OKC Blue

Ousmane Dieng assigned to G League’s OKC Blue.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Friday they had assigned Ousmane Dieng to the G League’s OKC Blue.

This has been a regular occurrence for the second-year wing in his tenure with the Thunder. The 20-year-old has struggled to gain consistent playing time in the NBA, so the G League provides him a chance to get serious reps.

Dieng was recalled from a lengthy stay with the Blue on Jan. 10, and he appeared in four games for the Thunder in his latest stay.

During his recent assignment, he averaged 16.9 points on 39% shooting, seven rebounds and 3.1 assists in seven games. He shot 23.1% from 3 on 5.6 attempts.

In 22 games with the Thunder, Dieng has averaged 4.2 points on 42.3% shooting, and 1.9 rebounds. The 20-year-old was drafted with the 11th pick in the 2022 NBA draft.
