Ohio State defeats Minnesota in Big Ten Tournament. Three things we learned.

Ohio State got back in the winning column today, holding on against Minnesota by the score of 79-75. Here are three takeaways from the game.

Ohio State got back in the win column Thursday, holding off a hard-charging Minnesota Golden Gopher squad to advance to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. OSU played much better for larger stretches of the game than what we’ve seen over the four game losing streak, but it still got a little sketchy down the stretch.

When you’re in the throws of March though, it’s all about survive and advance, and that’s exactly what the Buckeyes did, winning by a score of 79-75.

Once again, there was plenty to observe and take away from this game, and as we do every game, we’ve got some things we think we know after what we witnessed in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Here are three takeaways from Ohio State’s victory over Minnesota in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Ohio State uses quick start, defense, to lead Minnesota at halftime in Big Ten Tournament

Ohio State got off to a quick start and played some solid defense to head into the locker room up by double digits vs. Minnesota.

What we saw from the Ohio State basketball team is more of what we witnessed during the lengthy conference winning streak the team was on. The Buckeyes jumped all over Minnesota early, scoring the first eleven points of the game, then used played the Gophers even the rest of the way to lead 39-27 at halftime.

There’s been much more of an open flow to the game than what we saw during the four game losing streak. Guys are finding each other, getting out in the open court because of good defense, and finishing strong with good looks.

E.J. Liddell leads Ohio State with eight points on 3-of-8 shooting, but the rest of the scoring is spread out pretty evenly with Justice Sueing, Duane Washington, and Kyle Young all chipping in seven points apiece. All told, eight Buckeyes have scored a bucket in the first half.

For Minnesota, it’s been a struggle to knock shots down. A lot of that has to do with an active OSU defense, but it also looked like the Gophers came out a little flat after a hard battle just one night ago vs. Northwestern. They shot much better later in the second half, but were challenged early to score. Eight turnovers haven’t helped matters for Minnesota.

Ohio State might be up by twelve, but this game is far from over. The Gophers are playing for their postseason lives and will come out looking to make a run and tighten the game up early in the second half.

OK. Here we go. It’s March and it’s time for all the madness to begin. Before we get into the NCAA Tournament though, it’s time for some mayhem in the Big Ten Tournament for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have lost four straight games, but that matters little now. It’s really like a brand new season, with each win a one-and-done scenario. Ohio State now nows its opponent, and it comes in the form of the No. 13 seed Minnesota Golden Gophers. They were playing some really good ball when they beat OSU by seventeen points early in the season, but since then have fallen on hard times because of scattered play and injury.

Somehow, someway, Minnesota found a way against Northwestern on Wednesday, and Ohio State will need to be at the top if its game to move on to face Purdue with a win in the quarterfinals.

The stage is set, now it’s time to put on the show.

It’s another game in the Big Ten, and that means it’s another tough battle with significant implications on the line for Ohio State basketball. With such a tough and deep league, one game here, one game there, can make a huge difference in where each team finishes in the standings. Those standings could have a huge impact on where teams go for the postseason.

For the Buckeyes, the next Donnybrook is on the road against a team playing with a lot of momentum, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Not only is Minnesota playing well, but this game is also in the old barn, Williams Arena, which always seems to give teams fits for its quirky feel and shooting background.

The Buckeyes need this one, and we know you want to watch. Here’s all the information you need to find the game, whether you want to watch it on television, stream it, or catch it on the radio.

So far, the Big Ten basketball season has been an up and down affair for Ohio State. There was a great win over a highly ranked Rutgers team, but then close losses at Purdue and at Northwestern. Each game is going to be a dogfight in a talented and loaded conference, and that’s exactly what we have Sunday as well.

The Buckeyes step away from home again to travel to the frozen tundra of Minneapolis to take on a Golden Gophers team that has been a pleasant surprise thus far. They also sit at 2-2 in the Big Ten, but have won nine of their first eleven games, and are scoring the basketball at a high and efficient rate.

It’s a big tilt because the winner moves back above .500, and one game is going to make a huge difference in where you finish in this 2020-2021 conference.

Let’s get into some important things to note in this one.

Ohio State basketball loses to Minnesota: 3 Things we learned

Ohio State came back down to earth tonight after getting run off the court to Minnesota in Minneapolis. Here’s three things we learned.

It was bound to happen at some point. An Ohio State team that had looked nearly unbeatable through the first nine games of the season laid an absolute egg tonight. The defense wasn’t its normal stingy self, it was a bad shooting night, and warts of the past showed up for the first time in 2019.

At the end of the day, there’s not much to take from this one other than a helping of humble pie after a 84-71 loss to the Golden Gophers. The Buckeyes now fall to 9-1 and 1-1 in the Big Ten in an extremely shocking dud of a performance in “The Barn.”

Here’s three things we learned.

Ohio State vs. Minnesota 2019 basketball game preview and prediction

The Ohio State basketball team is traveling to the Twin Cities to take on Minnesota. Here’s how we expect it all to go down Sunday.

The Ohio State basketball team is all set to travel on the road for the first time in the Big Ten. We all know how tough it is to win away from home in this conference, but this team seems to be on a roll.

Meanwhile, Minnesota has struggled early on in 2019 and will be looking for a huge upset to jump start an upwards trend. It’s the last conference game in a bit of a wacky schedule philosophy we’ve seen since the league went to 22 conference games. After this quick two-game dive into the Big Ten, the conference then steps back outside of the league until after the New Year.

Let’s dive into the numbers and get to the preview and prediction of what’s going to take place in “The Barn” in Minneapolis.

Ohio State at Minnesota odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Ohio State Buckeyes at Minnesota Golden Gophers sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Ohio State Buckeyes (9-0, 1-0 Big Ten) will tangle in the Twin Cities with the Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-5, 0-1 Big Ten) in a Big Ten Conference battle at 6:30 p.m. ET Sunday. We analyze the Ohio State-Minnesota odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Ohio State at Minnesota: Three things you need to know

1. The Buckeyes really burst onto the national scene by hammering North Carolina at the Dean Dome Dec. 4. With a victory the Buckeyes might ascend to the No. 1 spot in the rankings for the first time since 2010-11.

2. The Golden Gophers are a game below .500, but they have had a tough schedule during the early going. They have losses to Oklahoma, Butler, Utah, DePaul and Iowa, in the Big Ten opener.

3. Ohio State has covered the spread in seven straight games, including six in a row as a favorite.

Prediction

Ohio State 74, Minnesota 67

Moneyline (ML)

Ohio State (-333) is expected to win this one, but as a moderate favorite the moneyline isn’t worth a play, as you’d have to risk way too much for a small reward. A $10 bet on the Buckeyes to win outright would return a profit of just $3.

Against the Spread (ATS)

MINNESOTA (+8.5, -143) should be able to hang around, as it’s catching four buckets at home. Home teams are actually 11-0 straight up in Big Ten games to date, so Ohio State (-8.5, +120) is on upset alert here. It’s all on the line, as a solid win and it’s likely headed for the top spot in the rankings. But a loss, even against a sub-.500 Minnesota team, wouldn’t be shocking.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Minnesota to cover the spread and stay within 8 points in a loss or win outright would profit $7 if it does so.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 128.5 (-120) seems criminally low, but perhaps I am overvaluing the Buckeyes offense based on the fact they dropped a triple-digit total against Penn State in the conference opener. While the Under has been the trend for the Bucks, more often than not, the over is 4-1-2 in Minny’s past seven games against winning sides.
