Ohio State men’s lacrosse knocked out of NCAA Tournament

Ohio State men’s lacrosse’s NCAA tournament run has come to an end. #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday after losing to Cornell.

Things started off great for the Buckeyes as they raced out to a 4-0 first-quarter lead before a weather delay halted things for nearly 90 minutes. Things continued with about 11 minutes left in the half with OSU up 4-2, but Cornell was able to score two of the next three goals to grab the momentum despite Ohio State leading 5-6 at the break.

The second half was all Cornell.

The Big Red went on a 6-1 run in the second half and put the game out of reach, eventually winning by the final tally of 15-8. Cornell will now head to the quarterfinals of the tournament, while OSU will prep for the offseason.

“Congratulation to Cornell on a really well-played game,” said head coach Nick Myers in a statement. “While it’s disappointing any time your season comes to an end, I couldn’t be prouder of a group of men and especially a group of seniors. These seniors brought Buckeye lacrosse back and for that they can hold their heads high. We have bright days ahead of us and I’m thankful to everyone who went along on this journey with us.”

With the loss, the Buckeyes finish their season with a 10-6 overall record.

The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team isn’t done yet.

The waiting had to be like giving birth to a postseason child, but in the end, the baby came healthy with all limbs in the right place. That’s because the Buckeyes watched Suday and received the exhilarating news of receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Buckeyes finished the season with a 10-5 record, one that included three wins over ranked teams. The team finished with a 3-2 record in Big Ten play and were a so-called “bubble” team. In the end, OSU did enough to make it into the ten team field.

Ohio State’s opponent will be No. 7 seed Cornell, with the game set for Sunday at 2:30 PM ET. The two met earlier this year with the Big Red beating the Buckeyes by a score of 14-11. And it’s not the first time the two programs have met in the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes won the previous meeting, 15-7, in 2008. This will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two schools with Cornell leading the series, 4-2.

“We’re thrilled to be able to extend our season and play in the NCAA Tournament,” said head coach Nick Myers in a statement. “To be in this position is a huge credit to the leadership on this team. They’ve guided us through a very challenging schedule and the gauntlet that is the Big Ten. Having the reward of playing next weekend is significant and we’ll immediately get to work to tackle the task in front of us.”

This is Ohio State’s seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament, four of which have come under the direction of current head coach Nick Meyers.

Three Ohio State lacrosse players taken in National Lacrosse League Draft

Three Ohio State players heard their names called Thursday night during the 2021 National Lacrosse League Draft.

Three former Ohio State men’s lacrosse players heard their names called during the 2020 NLL Draft. Tre Leclaire, Jeff Henrick, and Ryan Terefenko we all selected Thursday night.

Two Buckeyes were taken in the top ten with Leclaire going to the San Diego Seals at No. 4, and Henrick No. 8 to Georgia Swarm. Terefenko got in the top 30 at No. 27 to the Halifax Thunderbirds.

“It’s an exciting night for Tre, Jeff and Ryan as well as Buckeye Lacrosse,” said head coach Nick Myers in a statement. “These men will carry on a great Buckeye tradition in the NLL. I have no doubt they will make an impact for their new teams when that time comes. That being said, these men have made a commitment to finish what they started here in Columbus. The way they have lead this team over the past six months and their commitment to the Buckeye Brotherhood truly speaks to why I feel so strongly they will be great pros for years to come.”

With two first-round picks, Ohio State has now produced ten total over the last seven years, more than any other program in the country. The Buckeyes have had 11 first-rounders in program history and a total of 13 overall draft selections.

Additionally, with the three top-five picks that were taken in 2017, Ohio State became the first program to have multiple first-round picks in a four-year span.

Not bad for a football school.
