Big Ten Week 10 rundown: All final scores, quick thoughts, updated standings, and bowl eligibility tracker

The start of November offered a little bit of drama around the Big Ten in Week 10. The conference’s top two playoff contenders, Ohio State and  Michigan, each were thrown into some adversity against overmatched opponents on the road before coming up with big plays to take care of things as expected. And in the Big Ten West, an upset loss at home by Illinois may have made the division race a bit more interesting to start off the month when they could have wrapped everything up early.

Here is a look at all of the developments from around the Big Ten in Week 10, as well as what comes next for each school and the updated bowl standings and bowl eligibility tracker.

The rankings referenced below are the updated College Football Playoff rankings.

Kicker Noah Ruggles has returned to the Ohio State football team after taking the spring semester off

In case you were worried … #GoBucks

You figured this would be the case, but until you directly from someone involved with the program, you just never know. After a fantastic 2021 season, Ohio State kicker Noah Ruggles has rejoined the team after taking the spring semester off.

The news came directly from OSU head coach Ryan Day when meeting with the media late last week. “He (Noah Ruggles) needed a little time away,” Day said, “but he’s back.”

Ruggles was embattled in a fierce competition with Jake Siebert for the starting job after transferring from North Carolina. He eventually won the job and made 20-of-21 field-goal tries, including nailing 4-of-4 from 40-49 yards. He also made all 74 extra-point attempts.

As to why Ruggles took the spring semester off, he did so with the blessing of the coaching staff as a sixth-year guy who was dealing with some off-the-field issues. “He’s an older guy,” special teams coordinator Parker Fleming said. “He’s mature. He can take care of himself, and that’s something he was doing the entire time he wasn’t with us.”

Now that Ruggles is back, that would appear to be one less thing the football team has to worry about as it gears up for what everyone hopes is another run at some special things in 2021.

AP Poll rankings: Georgia football not a top-4 team

Georgia is listed as the No. 5 team in the country…

The 2021 preseason AP Poll top-25 is out and Georgia football finds itself outside looking in.

The Associated Press has the Bulldogs listed as the No. 5 team in the country behind Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma and defending champion Alabama.

Georgia returns 84% of its production on offense, including star quarterback J.T. Daniels, and besides a new-look secondary – which now features two of the top defensive backs in the country in transfers Derion Kendrick and Tykee Smith – Georgia will have one, if not the best front seven in college football. Pair that with returning the SEC’s best special-teams unit a year ago and I don’t see how you can put the Bulldogs anywhere but the top-4.

AP Poll voters clearly prioritized Oklahoma and the play calling ability of head coach Lincoln Riley along with Heisman-hopeful quarterback Spencer Rattler in listing Oklahoma at No. 2.

The Sooners’ defense should be the question…

While Oklahoma allowed 350 yards per game on average in 2020 (middle of the pack), the defense looked abysmal against a 4-6 Kansas State which put up 38 points on the way to an upset win. Iowa State was able to put up 37 points in the Sooner’s only other loss in 2020.

Not saying the unit can’t improve but there is a significant gap in defensive play here. For example, the Sooners have allowed 54 points per game to SEC teams in the college football playoffs on the way to an 0-3 record.

On the other hand, Alabama and Clemson are undeniable here. Alabama has reloaded with quarterback Brice Young and Ohio State transfer receiver Jameson Williams after losing some top playmakers on both sides of the ball, but when does coach Nick Saban not reload?

Clemson is once again a powerhouse even after losing some key playmakers as well. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei looked fantastic when given the chance behind Trevor Lawrence and the Tigers’ defense returns almost every starter from a year ago.

Georgia versus Clemson on Sept. 4 is going to be an awesome matchup.

Then there is Ohio State, who replaces star quarterback Justin Fields with former five-star C.J. Stroud and returns two of the top receivers in the country in Garret Wilson and Chris Olave. But on defense, the Buckeyes took a big dip in 2020 after losing multiple stars to the NFL draft. If Ohio State can find continuity on that side of the ball, they should own the Big Ten in 2021. That said, none of these things constitutes a higher ranking than the Bulldogs…

Several other SEC teams received high praise from AP voters. Texas A&M is listed at No. 6 even after losing star quarterback Kellen Mond to the NFL. The Aggies return a serious run game and most of its defensive production, which finished behind Georgia as the top unit in the SEC in 2020.

The final SEC teams included in the poll is Florida at No. 13 and LSU at No. 16.

2021 preseason AP Poll:

  1. Alabama
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Clemson
  4. Ohio State
  5. Georgia
  6. Texas A&M
  7. Iowa State

247Sports lists two Michigan games as being the most controversial in CFB

#Michigan is one of the most screwed teams by the refs and this proves it.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01f5k5y2jb3twsvdg4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

If you’re a Michigan football fan, you already know that the Wolverines are rarely on the good side of fortune when it comes to winning close football games. From the Kordell Stewart hail mary to trouble with the snap against rival MSU, the maize and blue always seem to find creative ways to lose.

But, it’s not always a talented or fluky play that causes Michigan to falter in the end.

247Sports took a look at the top 10 most controversial games in college football since the year 2000, and the first game mentioned was the infamous ‘Spartan Bob’ fiasco in 2001, when it appeared that Michigan football had won the game before extra time was added to the clock, which allowed T.J. Duckett to down the maize and blue.

The rivalry series between Michigan and Michigan State has featured plenty of memorable contests, though the 2001 meeting between the schools is best remembered for the controversy that came during the final drive of the Spartans’ upset of the No. 4 Wolverines. A tightly-contested game all-the-way through, Michigan took a 24-20 lead with 5 minutes left in the game via a 20-yard touchdown pass from John Navarre to Jermaine Gonzales. With Michigan State then needing a trip to the end zone of their own to retake the lead and win the game, the teams traded punts on the following two drives before the Spartans got the ball back in their hands one last time with just more than two minutes on the game clock.

And that game clock, as fate would have it, wouldn’t be forgotten anytime soon. Michigan State proceeded to slowly but surely work its way down field, ultimately finding themselves within the Michigan 5-yard line with only a single second left on the clock after a spike. But the 0:01 on the scoreboard didn’t come without debate, as Michigan coaches, players and even television broadcasters contended that game clock operator Bob Stehlin — known locally as “Spartan Bob” — generously stopped the clock before the spike on the previous play actually occurred. Michigan State would proceed to score on that final play when Jeff Smoker completed a 2-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Duckett, giving Michigan State the 26-24 upset win. All that said, debates still continue to this day about who truly won “Clockgate,” and the events even prompted the Big Ten to implement conference-appointed clock operators starting in 2002.

But certainly, that’s not the one that’s fresh or nearly as painful to those who adore the winged helmet. There’s three words that still seem to ring out as a battle cry, years after the incident.

J.T. was short.

Naturally, the 2016 iteration of The Game — where quarterback J.T. Barrett appeared to be stopped short of the line to gain on fourth down in overtime before the officials granted him the first down — is a contentious moment for Michigan football fans, even still. Just as egregious, but unmentioned, were the officiating calls that preceded that play: a pass interference call in the fourth quarter on Delano Hill in the fourth, despite the ball being uncatchable; and the uncalled pass interference on the previous possession in overtime where wideout Grant Perry was hooked.

Michigan fans will forever tell you that J.T. Barrett’s forward progress was stopped short of the first-down marker, while Ohio State fans never doubted for a moment that their signal-caller had the distance before Curtis Samuel pranced his way to the end zone for the walk-off 30-27 win. That said, the pivotal 4th and 1 play in double overtime, one that ultimately went in favor of Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes as they needed a conversion to stay alive, will forever be what the 2016 iteration of “The Game” — one that saw No. 2 go against No. 3 with a playoff bid essentially on the line — is remembered for.

Though Ohio State finished second its division thanks to a regular-season loss at Penn State, the Buckeyes nevertheless took the No. 3 seed in that year’s playoff, while both Michigan’s Big Ten title drought and the team’s skid in the series with its arch rival were extended for yet another year. To this date, Michigan has still not won in Columbus since 2000 and has not prevailed in the series since 2011.

Of 247Sports’ list of 10 games, Ohio State was the benefactor in two of said games, proving the Buckeyes are on the opposite spectrum than the Wolverines. Not only did the 2016 game go in OSU’s favor, but so did the 2002 national championship game. However, Ohio State’s turn in the 2019 College Football Playoff semifinal against Clemson was one instance where the Buckeyes saw the officials turn against them.

Michigan was the only team to appear on the list twice being on the bad end of calls both times.
