Notre Dame-Wisconsin: Staff Predictions

What happens Saturday in Chicago? Leave your predictions below…

We’re just a day away from kickoff between No. 10 Notre Dame and No. 15 Wisconsin in the biggest game of this college football weekend. Win and the Notre Dame faithful might just start to buy in that the Irish could be a real threat for the College Football Playoff despite how unimpressive they looked for the majority of the first three games. Lose and the slate of No. 8 Cincinnati, a trip to Virginia Tech, and home games against both USC and North Carolina to follow only appear that much more daunting.

So what happens Saturday at Soldier Field?  We brought in a few reinforcements from Badgers Wire to help us try and figure exactly that out.

LOOK: Wisconsin will debut an all-new jersey for the Notre Dame game

Wisconsin will debut a new jersey this Saturday:

Wisconsin will be going with a fresh, new alternate uniform for their clash with Notre Dame on Saturday.

The new jersey was announced earlier this offseason, but the Badgers made wearing them against Notre Dame official this week. The new design is known as the “forward jersey,” and is an all-white alternate look that takes the Badgers back in time.

Wisconsin football had more on the meaning of the uniform:

The Badgers will wear a special white “Forward” uniform set to honor the state of Wisconsin. The helmet and pants feature a version of the Motion W logo that includes the stripe from the Wisconsin state flag emblazoned with the state motto, “Forward.”

Notre Dame (3-0) vs Wisconsin (2-1) Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Notre Dame has been just okay. Not great, but okay.

Oh sure, it’s 3-0, but 1) it needed overtime to get by a miserable Florida State team that went in the tank, 2) almost got bit by a Toledo team that got hammered a week later by an awful Colorado State, and 3) last week needed a late score and a few big plays to get by a decent Purdue team.

Wisconsin couldn’t get the O going against Penn State in the opening week loss, but everything looked fine in the follow up blowout over Eastern Michigan. The offense is still a bit of a question mark overall – the passing attack just isn’t sharp – but the ground game is back to being good again after a rough 2020. It’s the other side that’s the killer.

The Badgers have allowed just 66 rushing yards in two games, are No. 2 in the nation in total defense, and they’re getting the D off the field in a hurry – they lead the nation in time of possession, keeping the ball for 41 minutes a game.

Outside of a few big runs, the Irish are struggling on the ground – they’re going to run into a brick wall here. The offensive line is in for a long day – the pass protection has been abysmal – in front of a guy the Badger coaching staff knows all too well.

Former Wisconsin starter Jack Coan is under center for the Irish, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The guy has been great.

Coan was off a bit against Purdue, but he’s averaging over 300 passing yards per game with a slew of deep plays, nine touchdown passes, and the veteran leadership desperately needed in the tight early games.

For all of the issues the Irish have had, they’re tested. They’ve been pushed, and they keep managing to come through with the big plays at just the right times.

Opportunistic, they have yet to come away empty in the red zone – a massive issue for the Badgers in the loss to Penn State – and they’ve been great at forcing takeaways.

It’s this simple – Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz has been awful when pressured, or when he doesn’t get enough time to make the right read. This team has a very, very bad problem of being totally incapable of overcoming turnovers.

Notre Dame wins this if it’s +2 in turnover margin.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

America, welcome to the Wisconsin defense.

The Notre Dame offense isn’t going to do a thing on the ground, but it’s possible to hit the Badger secondary deep. Coan will come up with a few big plays against his old team, but he’s not going to get enough time to do it consistently.

Florida State was able to take over in the second half against the Irish with the running game. Wisconsin has a different style – more brutish than quick-hitting – but it’ll be effective.

The game will be taken out of Mertz’s hands as much as possible, the D with two weeks of rest will pick up the slack for a few empty drives, and in the first meeting since 1964 – a 31-7 Irish win – Wisconsin will make a bit of a statement.

Notre Dame/Wisconsin still on…for 2021

Notre Dame and Wisconsin are set to meet up…in 2021

It was supposed to be one of the biggest non-conference games in college football this fall but Notre Dame and Wisconsin won’t be playing after all at Lambeau Field.

The back end of the two year series is however still scheduled for Soldier Field in 2021 according to Notre Dame athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, who adds that they’ll work to reschedule the game at the Green Bay Packers home.

For me this series is great as it’s two midwest powers and Barry Alvarez’s connection to Notre Dame’s great run at the end of the eighties only helps that.

What would be better though is if the games took place on the actual college campuses.

Lambeau Field is as great of football venue as I’ve been in but Solider Field is, well, not.

Know what venues are both great?

Camp Randall and Notre Dame Stadium.

Maybe I’m the only one in this world of change but I prefer when college football powerhouses play each other on each others campuses.

Notre Dame AD Swarbrick: Football “less likely” to start on time

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick is losing faith that we’ll see college football start on time in 2020. Find out more here.

If you’ve taken a look around the world of college football lately you haven’t gotten a ton of good news in regards to the 2020 season.  Sure, Notre Dame and Michigan both came back with no positive tests recently, but places like Ohio State and North Carolina along with plenty of others have seen positive tests sky-rocket.

Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick has seen it to, saying Thursday that the chances of the season starting on time have taken a big hit recently.

Swarbrick spoke with ESPN’s Heather Dench and although he’s not punting on a week one start at Navy, he doesn’t seem to be packing his bags to attend, either.

“It has grown more pessimistic over the past two weeks, but I’m not to a point to say we shouldn’t continue to plan for the potential to open on time,” said Swarbrick. “I just think it’s less likely. We have to shift our allocations a little bit — a little more time on planning the alternatives, and a little less time on planning routine go forward.”

I’m with Swarbrick on this one. As good of news as it was to see no positive tests were had by Notre Dame’s football team earlier this week, that’s not the case elsewhere as cases continue to soar on many campuses.

Swarbrick also spoke about the great job Notre Dame’s football team has done following guidelines in order to prevent any potential outbreak of COVID-19 in their locker room.

“It’s so much about the guys and talking with [them], making sure there’s an understanding, appealing to them to do all they can to protect their season”

They understand there’s only two to an elevator in the hotel. They understand they’re not to congregate in rooms. And they’re just doing it.”

The news out of Notre Dame was good to see earlier this week but across much of the rest of the nation things were a bit sour.  Swarbrick is reading the same news reports we all seem to be and appears to be thinking very realistically about all of this.

Here’s to hoping somehow that game at Navy does end up taking place on Labor Day weekend.
