Why Notre Dame Will Win

The two teams played once this season with the Irish rolling 79-58 in South Bend. They hit 51% from the field, was on from three, and destroyed the Demon Deacons on the boards.

But that’s the norm for Wake Forest.

It can’t come up with rebounds, it’s awful a guarding the three, and it’s last int eh ACC in field goal percentage. On a run of seven straight losses, the team struggles to get to 30% shooting from the field and has only hit the 40% mark from three once since the loss to the Irish.

Notre Dame might be in the midst of a rough season, but it managed to beat ACC regular season champ Florida State by ten on Saturday, and …

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Yeah, FSU didn’t really care with the ACC title already wrapped up.

So what is Wake Forest doing right? It might struggle to hit threes, but it shoots a ton of them and makes a lot in a strength-in-numbers way. The Irish are awful at defending the three, allowing teams to hit 40% or more in four of the last eight games.

Notre Dame doesn’t make up for its mistakes with offensive rebounds and doesn’t do a thing to force mistakes – it’s one of the worst teams in the country at forcing turnovers.

What’s Going To Happen

Which team can hit their threes?

Wake Forest hasn’t been able to make enough shots from anywhere, and Notre Dame has been just good enough at times and the defense is just a wee bit better. It’s not going to anything aesthetically pleasing, but the Irish will be happy to keep their season rolling.

The Rev. John Jenkins Will Co-Chair Search for New ACC Commissioner

On Thursday, the ACC announced that it has launched a search for its next commissioner.

On Thursday, the ACC announced that it has launched a search for its next commissioner. Current commissioner John Swofford announced his pending retirement in June. The conference’s board of directors will direct what will be a national search in hopes of having Swofford’s successor in place by next summer.

Heading the search advisory committee will be the Rev. John Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president, and Wake Forest president Nathan Hatch. The committee will collect feedback and information from its schools. A variety of representatives from within the conference will serve on the committee.

Obviously, Jenkins will be impartial in helping Hatch head this committee. After all, this new commissioner will be beneficial to all conference members and not only Notre Dame. At the same time, Jenkins will need to find a leader that will be easy to work with should his university undergo some sort of seismic change, say, become a full-time ACC member for football. Best of luck to him as he assists with this decision.

We have a new nominee for oddest bowl game sponsorship

We have a new nominee for the oddest name for a bowl game in all of college football after a new sponsor was named for the former Belk Bowl.

Earlier this off-season we got word that the iconic Cheez It Bowl was moving from Arizona to Orlando to take over what was previously known as the Camping World Bowl.  News out on Thursday however takes the crown as the biggest and perhaps grossest college bowl news of 2020.

That’s right, the game formerly known as the Belk Bowl in Charlotte will now be the Duke’s Mayonnaise Bowl.  In conjunction, a game Notre Dame plays in this fall will be have the Duke’s sponsorship attached as well.

When Notre Dame and Wake Forest play in Charlotte in late September, they’ll now be playing in the inaugural Duke’s Mayo Classic.

Man, I can’t wait to see the trophy for that one.

Now I think mayo gets a bit of a bad wrap but some but I’m not going to get on-board with saying I love it, either.  Those tomato and mayo sandwiches look disgusting but if you add a tiny bit of it to a burger you’ve got something.

In my book it’s not quite The Bad Boys Mowers Gasparilla Bowl or The Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl, named for beautiful Elk Grove Village, Illinois, but it’s not far off, either.

The Duke’s Mayonnaise Bowl will feature an ACC team annually with the Big Ten and SEC rotating as the opponent.  The Big Ten will have first dibs in playing the ACC for all of the Mayo this coming bowl season.

98 Days Until Notre Dame Football (We Hope)

Here we are just 98 days, 14 weeks exactly from the SCHEDULED start of Notre Dame football in 2020. Get ready for Irish football now!

The countdown is on!

Exactly 14 weeks from now, just 98 days (we hope) Notre Dame will return to the football field for Season 133 when the Irish take on Navy in a Week Zero affair.  Will the game be played as scheduled?  I’m guessing not in Ireland but perhaps with the way the news has gone this week we’ll see it get underway on time.

Each day from now until Notre Dame kicks off the year we’ll count down the days with the number and why it’s significant in the history of Notre Dame football.

Yesterday, Nick Setta’s nearly-perfect career PAT conversion percentage got us through Friday.

Today we get into the weekend back on offense, with the longest run in Notre Dame history.

It was November of 2015 and Notre Dame was sitting fourth overall in the country, looking to take another step towards their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.  Leading Wake Forest 14-0 early in the second quarter the Irish had the ball backed up nearly to their own goal line.

98:  Josh Adams sets the record for the longest run in the history of Notre Dame football.

Notre Dame would win easy that afternoon, 28-7 as Adams would finish with 141 rushing yards.  Just three years later Dexter Williams would nearly match the mark, taking a run 97 yards to the house at Virginia Tech in 2015.

That 2015 Notre Dame squad would eventually fall on the last play of the regular season at Stanford to miss out on their first CFP appearance.
