Brian Kelly gives update on all things Notre Dame football

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly joined Rich Eisen on Wednesday and updated the world on everything going on in regards to Notre Dame football.

Brian Kelly has been coaching football for over 30 years and hasn’t experienced anything quite like what he’s dealing with as a coach right now.  Kelly joined “The Rich Eisen Show” on Wednesday and updated the world on pretty much everything in regards to Notre Dame football in 2020.

Why is he optimistic that Notre Dame will have a football season in 2020?

“Because I think our university wants to have one,” Kelly said.  He wouldn’t speak for university administration but also offered “if there are students on our campus, we’re playing football!”

On playing Navy on August 29th in Dublin, Ireland:

“Navy is gonna be a game, whether it’s played in Ireland or Bethesda.  I think we’re going to play. I don’t have definitive, 100%, but obviously things are trending that way, we’re moving in that direction, we want to play in the fall…at the end of the day those decisions are going to be made by our president and board of trustees, not the football coach at Notre Dame, so let’s get that straight.

So FedEx Field just outside of Washington, DC I assume he means?  That’s fine, although playing in Annapolis would be a lot cooler.

On how Notre Dame plans to handle social distancing with the football team:

“As we’re planning on no salad bars and spacing in the locker room and the weight room and some of these really important issues so you can in fact avoid a hot spot or the potential of what the worst case scenario could be, you start and then you have to shut down“

On what the players most want to know:

“The players just want to know dates and times. They want to be in the position where they can put on the calendar.  The problem is we can’t give them that because everything is staged in terms of the states and universities. They want to wait as long as they can because they want to get better testing, they want to get better tracing, they want to get where are we going to quarantine and and those things take more time.”

On uniqueness of getting players back on campus:

“It gets to the point where I know it’s frustrating for them, but they know that we’re doing all the planning necessary, because here’s where it’s a little different than year’s past.”

“We have to over-communicate with the parents. If it’s my kid I’m not putting him on a plane to South Bend.  I better know exactly what’s in place for my son when he gets there that he’s not going to get sick.”

The Latest Update on Notre Dame/Navy in Ireland

“We’re looking at all of those possibilities for alternate sites.  We would still like to to play it there if it’s at all possible.  I think it’s prudent that we’ve begun the process of looking at alternative sites and well, not necessarily knowing truly what the situation will be.”

We’re just under five months from when the 2020 college football season is supposed to kick-off and Notre Dame gets a part this year in Week Zero as they’re currently scheduled to take on Navy in Dublin, Ireland to start the year.  Due to the Covid-19 outbreak world-wide though, that and the season as we know it are anything but guaranteed.

The head coaches of both programs, Brian Kelly and Ken Niumatolo of Navy, joined Full Ride on ESPN U Radio Thursday and made news in regards to the season opener.

Are there contingency plans or have they at least begun being made if this game can’t be played in Ireland?

“Oh, absolutely” Kelly said, “We’re looking at all of those possibilities for alternate sites.  We would still like to to play it there if it’s at all possible.  I think it’s prudent that we’ve begun the process of looking at alternative sites and well, not necessarily knowing truly what the situation will be.”

So no, it hasn’t been cancelled.

Yet.

Niumatolo didn’t get asked about the chances of the game being played in Dublin but did get asked about the amount of time that’d be necessary in order to be able to play that game as scheduled.

“I think if you ask coaches, we’d all want longer. I saw something, I think it was Brian Kelly, talked about a month and a month. A month to start doing physical conditioning with your strength coach and another month to start practicing. I’ve heard somebody say, ‘Hey, we probably could do it in a month. The product may not be the greatest, so to speak.’

“Maybe your guys are in good enough shape that they won’t get hurt. From a fan’s perspective, it will look like football and things will be great. And from a coach’s perspective, maybe you’ll look and see your routes aren’t as crisp. Your pad-level isn’t as great, or whatever the case may be. I think you can still play.”

I wish I had a good answer on it but I don’t.  My rule of thumb is usually splitting the extremes so if one says four and one says eight weeks, my guess is you’re looking at six weeks realistically and almost certainly not a day shorter than that to have to be able to get ready.

Kelly also went on to discuss the high expectations he has for the 2020 Fighting Irish, starting with his quarterback and offense and then complimenting his linebackers especially when praising the defense.

So no, nothing has been canceled but it doesn’t sound like anyone is anticipating going to Ireland at this point, either.

Notre Dame Almanac: Charlie Weis’s Dumbest Decision

That loss to Navy was laughable and anyone with any sense saw how over-matched Notre Dame had become, not in terms of talent, but in terms of employing a know-it-all coach who actually didn’t know a sneeze from a wet fart.

With it being Navy week I started to try and think of the most-memorable moments in the rivalry to me.  For a series that has been played seemingly forever, I have very few actual lasting memories of it.  With that said, a few did come to mind from games I remember watching.

2002 – A week after getting upset against Boston College, the Irish trailed 23-15 entering the fourth quarter before Carlyle Holiday threw two late touchdown passes, the final being the go-ahead score to Omar Jenkins to avoid a disasterous loss to a 1-7 Navy team.

2012 – Ten years later the Irish kicked off their season in Ireland, dismantling Navy 50-10.  Stephon Tuitt’s fumble return for a touchdown helped blow things wide open on an afternoon that belonged to the Irish, even abroad in Dublin.

And the single worst in-game-decision Charlie Weis made at Notre Dame, which is saying something…
