10 takeaways from Saints’ 20-13 loss to the Texans

10 takeaways from the New Orleans Saints’ 20-13 loss to the Houston Texans

The New Orleans Saints (3-3) hit the road to face the Houston Texans on Sunday with a chance to build off of a huge amount of momentum after recording a 34-0 win over the New England Patriots in their fifth game of the season.

That was not the case, though, as some of the issues of previous weeks reared their heads again and the offense once again failed to capitalize on the chances it did have.

In what could have been the fourth win of the season for the Saints at many different points in time, here’s a look into 10 things we took away from the 20-13 loss to the Texans:

7 takeaways from the Saints’ Week 1 win vs. Titans

The Saints offense has some work to do, but they appear to be on the right track. And the defense is still the strength of this team. 7 takeaways from Week 1’s win:

The New Orleans Saints won a defensive battle with the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, but what can we learn from that performance? Is the offense in as dire straits as it appeared? How thin is the margin for error defensively? Is Derek Carr really the guy at quarterback?

These are all questions we’re seeking to answer in our Week 1 takeaways:

8 takeaways from the Saints’ initial 53-man roster

More changes are on the way, but here are our 8 takeaways from the New Orleans Saints’ initial 53-man roster:

Here it is: the New Orleans Saints released their initial 53-man roster after cuts were reported to the league office on Tuesday, as per NFL rules. And we’ve had time to scour the depth chart up and down to see what’s been settled, what’s still unsaid, and what may be in the works.

Here are our eight takeaways from the Saints’ first 53-man roster of the 2023 season:

News and highlights from Day 2 of Saints’ joint practices with Chargers

News and highlights from Day 2 of Saints’ joint practices with Chargers: Checking in on the latest updates from Costa Mesa

We’re on to the second day of joint practices between the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers, which gives Derek Carr and the Saints offense another opportunity to compete with one of the NFL’s most talented offenses. That’s also true for the New Orleans defense as they look to pressure young franchise quarterback Justin Herbert and the high-flying Chargers offense.

Here are all of the highlights and reports from Friday’s Saints-Chargers practice:

Saints OL Andrus Peat returns to practice for first time since late July

New Orleans Saints guard Andrus Peat returned to practice for the first time since late July against the Chargers | @DillySanders

The New Orleans Saints have been without veteran offensive guard Andrus Peat after he went down with a quad injury in late July, during the team’s fifth training camp practice. He returned to practice for the first time on Thursday morning for a joint session against the Los Angeles Chargers ahead of their preseason game on Sunday night.

Peat is in the middle of a position battle with former starter James Hurst. Hurst is moving inside with the emergence of Trevor Penning at left tackle. Saints fans have a complicated history with Peat, but the former first-round pick is an important player to have healthy. Even if he doesn’t keep a starting job, experienced and at least serviceable offensive lineman are hard to come by in the NFL.

Now, Peat and Hurst are both healthy and able to fully battle it out.

Takeaways from the first New Orleans Saints unofficial depth chart

Takeaways from the first New Orleans Saints unofficial depth chart: Where there’s competition, and where there isn’t any question:

The New Orleans Saints shared their first unofficial depth chart ahead of Sunday’s preseason opener with the Kansas City Chiefs, and it’s got some interesting details for us to pore over. We’re so close to seeing live football again.

It’s important to remember that this depth chart was assembled by the media relations staff, not the coaches, so it may not be entirely accurate to what we’ll see when the first-, ,second-, and third-string units rotate into Sunday’s game against the Chiefs.

But this does seem to largely match up with what we’re seeing at training camp practice each day. Let’s get to it:

One takeaway from each Saints position group after first week at training camp

One takeaway from each Saints position group after first week at training camp

The first week of New Orleans Saints training camp is in the books — through four practices without pads, the team has experienced a lot of highlights and some low moments, but things are moving well. With their first padded practice coming up on Monday (in front of fans) and the preseason opener just two weeks away, let’s check in on each position group:

Bryan Bresee climbing the depth chart at Saints training camp

It didn’t take long for Bryan Bresee to start climbing the depth chart at Saints training camp. He ran with the first-string unit in front of fans on Friday:

It only took three practice sessions for the New Orleans Saints to give Bryan Bresee a look in the starting lineup. The 2023 first-round pick ran with the first-string defense on Friday in front of fans, and the athletic traits His teammates like defensive end Payton Turner are already noticing what he brings to the table.

“Dude’s quick, dude’s quick,” Turner grinned after Friday’s training camp practice. “He’s a good size too so he’s not some small three tech, he’s got pretty good size. Young. In the run game I think everybody needs to work coming into this league, just in the technique and being more precise, but he’s disruptive and I’m excited to see him in pads too.”

Bresee was part of the Saints’ complete rebuild at defensive tackle this summer; having spent their top pick in the 2024 draft on him, the team also invested heavy resources in free agency on veterans Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders. Coaches are rotating players throughout the lineup early and often this summer, so we’ll see if he holds onto a spot at the top of the depth chart, but it’s encouraging to see Bresee making plays and earning better opportunities so soon.
