Michigan State Football has lost a lot of defensive backs to the transfer portal in the past few months as Mel Tucker remakes the roster in his image. That leaves a lot of opportunity open in the Spartans’ secondary, and it looks like Tucker and his staff are going to give some chances to lower division standouts.
Rowland was one of the best players for Wheaton, who had the top ranked defense in Division III in 2019. He was also named a First Team All-American (Division III) by the Associated Press.

We already knew that they were bringing in Division II corner Kendall Brooks, but today we found out that the Spartans would also be bringing Spencer Rowland in as a walk-on. Rowland is from Northpointe Christian in Grand Rapids and played for Wheaton College before coming to MSU.
I first saw this news reported by Matt Wenzel from MLive:
Mel Tucker today mentioned 10 midyear additions to the program with nine (already known) on scholarship and one walk-on. A program spokesman said the walk-on is Spencer Rowland, a DB from DIII Wheaton College who is a NorthPointe Christian grad.
