It is on our home field, so that helps a little bit. They handled that stuff really well, so it benefited them. Tony Vitello previews Northern Kentucky in Knoxville Regional

Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello previews the Vols’ first game in the Knoxville Regional against Northern Kentucky.

No. 1 overall seed Tennessee (50-11) will open play in the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Regional on Friday.

The Vols will host North Kentucky (35-22) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. EDT and will be televised by SEC Network.

Seventh-year Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello met with media on Wednesday and previewed the contest against Northern Kentucky.

“Scrappy is a word that comes up often,” Vitello said of Northern Kentucky. “I think we have the ability to do that, too, but by nature that’s been who they are. They’re very well coached, and it’s easy if you hear their coach speak, he’s very well spoken since they’ve been there. They’re certainly no stranger to SEC opponents or SEC caliber opponents you. They’ve played Kentucky and they’ve gone in and beaten Mississippi State. They beat Missouri, then on top of that, to win their league they got to beat a team like Wright State, which, obviously, everyone standing here, not just me, has a ton of respect for that program.

“On offense, very aggressive, not just at the plate, but on the bases. Then we’ll see a right-handed pitcher (Tanner) Gillis that had an outstanding year. For him, and he’s older, he’s been there done that, so with that experience I’m sure he knows what to expect and how to handle it with what comes with a regional.”

Georgia baseball remains undefeated with walk-off win vs Northern Kentucky

Georgia baseball moves to 7-0 on the season thanks to a walk-off HBP

Georgia baseball is off to a perfect start in the 2024 season, moving to 7-0 with a walk-off victory at home against Northern Kentucky on Sunday. Freshman Tre Phelps was hit by a pitch three times, the third coming with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, giving the Bulldogs a 12-11 win to sweep the three-game series.

It was a career day by Phelps, who also recorded his first-career hit — a home run — to put the Bulldogs up 8-5 in the fifth. That run helped propel Georgia’s 4-run fifth inning, which included homers by Phelps, Logan Jordan and Kolby Branch.

Branch led the Georgia offense, hitting 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and two runs. Charlie Condon had an efficient day at the plate, hitting 4-for-5 with an RBI, two runs and a walk.

The Bulldogs ultimately squandered a 9-5 lead due to inconsistency on the mound. UGA’s pitching staff allowed 16 hits and four walks combined. Starter Leighton Finley gave up five hits, two of which were home runs, for four runs in three innings. Reliever Josh Roberge was pulled after 2.2 innings with eight hits and four more runs.

Despite the play on the mound, the Bulldogs held Northern Kentucky back during the late charge by the Norse. Georgia’s power at the plate was once again on full display. UGA’s 22 home runs in seven games leads the SEC.

Georgia will face tougher tests soon with matchups against Presbyterian and Michigan State before a three-game series with Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs will face their first ranked opponent when No. 18 Iowa makes a trip to Athens on March 15.
