Bowl Projection Has Notre Dame Out of Playoff

Few are predicting the playoff for Notre Dame after Saturday.

The fallout continues for Notre Dame after the ugly loss to Northern Illinois in Week 2.

The Fighting Irish have their work cut out for them if they want to be in the newly expanded College Football Playoff. At least one outlet has them missing the playoff, instead qualifying for the Gator Bowl, where they’d play Oklahoma.

This comes from 247Sports’ weekly bowl game projection/prediction series. Here’s what they have to say.

“The Fighting Irish fall out of this week’s playoff projection after a lackluster showing during a home loss to NIU. Notre Dame would have to win out from here to grab one of the seven at-large spots based on our projections — and that’s not happening if Marcus Freeman’s team struggled to handle business as a three-touchdown favorite in Week 2.”

Notre Dame may be settling for a bowl after its failure against NIU.
Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (4) hurdles over Northern Illinois safety Nate Valcarcel on his way to score a touchdown during a NCAA college football game at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, in South Bend.

It’s worth noting here that things can easily change, especially if other CFP contenders falter the way the Irish did — or if NIU shows that it’s a legit contender and its win wasn’t just because the Irish played an awful game. Other upsets could clear a path for the Irish, and if NIU is really a playoff contender, maybe the loss doesn’t look as bad a few weeks from now.

It’s also not clear that the Irish need to win out — many predictions made in the preseason or after the Notre Dame win over Texas A&M suggested the Irish could get in at 10-2. Of course, the two losses were predicted to be against top 25 teams — not a then-unranked team out of the MAC.

It’s a long season, and the same Notre Dame that experts said would get a home game in the first round is now being projected at out. Projections and predictions are just that, though — we’ll see what 247Sports says if the Irish are able to rebound. If they do, it starts next week at Purdue.

ESPN slams Notre Dame for ‘devastating’ Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois

Unfortunately, what they believe is true

You had to expect this to be coming, the national media was not going to hold back on their thoughts about Notre Dame football’s terrible performance against Northern Illinois.

The Irish fell to an underdog at home yet again under [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag], and the sting is still being left on Monday. ESPN’s Bill Connelly wrapped up this past weekend of college football action (subscription required), and was very critical of the loss.

Notre Dame looked like they’d be a shoo-in for the College Football Playoff after Week 1’s win over Texas A&M, but even if they finish 10-2, Connelly thinks “they’ll be at the back of a line of two-loss teams, most of which will feature harder schedules and no loss as bad as this one.”

Notre Dame’s last second field goal attempt is blocked to give Northern Illinois the 16-14 win in a NCAA college football game at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, in South Bend.

It’s the unfortunate reality of the situation, the Irish don’t have much of a margin for error for the remainder of the season. Connelly called the it “as devastating as a loss can be in Week 2 of a season.” Not the best position to be in just a few games into the year.

While the season still has plenty of games left to play, the pressure will be on Notre Dame to be perfect, something that we’ve seen they’ve struggled to be.

Northern Illinois’ local radio call of their Notre Dame upset win was absolutely thrilling

“THE HUSKIES HAVE DONE IT!”

It’s safe to say Northern Illinois’ local radio team stepped up to the moment — and then some — during the team’s upset win over Notre Dame.

Northern Illinois put together the biggest upset of the young season on Saturday, besting Notre Dame 16-14 in an incredible effort to knock off the No. 5 team in the country. It was a stunning moment, capped off by the Huskies blocking a 62-yard field goal attempt in the final moments to ice the win.

And no one captured the pure excitement of the moment better than Northern Illinois’ local radio team, who gave fans the most thrilling call of the game’s historic denouement.

Notre Dame drops in AP Top 25 poll after shocking loss

Notre Dame falls in the Ap Top 25 poll, but perhaps not as much as expected.

It’s obvious that Notre Dame was going to drop from No. 5 after being upset 16-14 by Northern Illinois in its home opener on Saturday.

Here’s how bad the damage is.

The good news is that the Fighting Irish remain in the top 20 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The bad news is that the Irish fall to 18th.

It may be of some consolation to Irish fans who are fighting off charges of “overrated” to know that Northern Illinois is now ranked at 25th.

It may also be some consolation to see Michigan drop to 17th.

The top five are Georgia, Texas, Ohio State, Alabama, and Ole Miss.

Notre Dame could’ve dropped further given how bad the loss to a four-touchdown underdog was. The Irish have work to do, but it could’ve been so much worse.

Experts Punish Notre Dame for Stunning Failure Against NIU

As expected, analysts are sour on Notre Dame after the Irish faceplant against Northern Illinois.

It’s no shock that Notre Dame is falling hard in the rankings put forth by various experts after the Fighting Irish lost to Northern Illinois on Saturday.

The Irish were favored by four touchdowns and lost to the Huskies 16-14. Not only did they lose, but they looked awful doing so. The offense was disjointed for most of the day, the defense struggled in the first half, two field-goal attempts were blocked and the playcalling didn’t seem to make sense at times.

Football is, of course, a week-to-week sport. Notre Dame may have been ranked a bit too high after a gritty, ugly 10-point win in the hostile environment at Texas A&M. Similarly, they may take a bit too much punishment for having an awful day against an unranked opponent at home.

The rest of the season will help determine if the Irish are overrated or are a College Football Playoff contender that simply had a bad day and/or overlooked an underdog opponent.

For now, though, Danny Kanell doesn’t have the Irish in his top 10. Nor does Joel Klatt. CFB Kings puts the Irish at 22 in their top 25 — just ahead of an Illinois team that upset Kansas Saturday night.

Klatt’s top 10 is Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Ole Miss, Miami, Tennessee, USC, Alabama, Penn State and Utah. Kanell’s top 12 are Georgia, Texas, Miami, Tennessee, USC, Penn State, Oregon, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama and Louisville.

Stewart Mandel from The Athletic now believes the Fighting Irish won’t even make the college playoff. Just a few days ago pundits had the Irish penciled in for a home game in the first round.

Notre Dame can play its way back into the pundits’ good graces. But it will need to win just about every game and look good while doing so.

Malik Zaire questions Notre Dame Stadium’s home field advantage

Zaire does have a point

It has been pointed out that Notre Dame football has not had the best success at home as favorites over the last few years.

While the Irish still do well in Notre Dame Stadium, you have to question how tough it is to play there as an opponent. Former Irish quarterback [autotag]Malik Zaire[/autotag] had some thoughts on that exact idea during today’s disappointing loss, and it was eye-opening.

He first said on X that Notre Dame “must rank last place in toughest places to play in college football.” Zaire then expanded on the thought saying “we might rank 1st in college football for the most comfortable, safest, and pleasant road game places to play.”

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Zaire has a point, but it’s not completely accurate. The top-25 atmospheres are electric, with the fans being involved all game. It just happens that when a team without much hype goes to South Bend, it’s all too quiet.

Notre Dame football is on the wrong end of a home-favorite stat

Not a stat the Irish want to be leading in

Saturday marked the third time that Notre Dame football has lost as a heavy home favorite, as the Irish fell to Northern Illinois early on Saturday night.

Following the game, many have been up in arms about Notre Dame’s performance and Fox Sports Chris Fallica found a very interesting stat that he shared on social media. Those three losses that the Irish have suffered have all been when they have been more than 16-point favorites, the most in a nation since the start of the 2022 season.

This is clearly not the stat that we all want to see Notre Dame at the top of, but it reiterates the fact that under [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag], the Irish have lost games they should have won.

Northern Illinois Huskies kicker Kanon Woodill kicks the game winning field goal in the fourth quarter against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

While Freeman addressed the issue in his post-game media session, it still doesn’t excuse the fact that these losses have happened. Hopefully, the third time is a charm, and this is corrected sooner than later.

Northern Illinois shocks Notre Dame in South Bend

Northern Illinois stuns Notre Dame in South Bend on a late field goal

NBC Sports’ college football weekend games promos mentioned Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon, and Boise State. When it came to Notre Dame, the voice simply said “home opener.”

NBC Sports and the college football world know who Northern Illinois is now. The Huskies stunned the Fighting Irish, 16-14, in South Bend on Saturday. They were paid $1.4 million to be a cupcake, which they proved ot be anything but.

That would be Northern Illinois from the MAC shocked a Notre Dame team ranked fifth after a season-opening victory over Texas A&M.The hype

Add this one to the Fighting Irish being beaten by Marshall and Louisville in the past two years.  Hype over reality?

Notre Dame scored on its first drive to take a 7-0 lead. It got one more touchdown the rest of the game.

Northern Illinois scored 10 straight points in the first quarter to take the lead.

It got another field goal in the second quarter to go up 13-7.

Jeremiah Love gave the Irish the lead in the third quarter with a 34-yard TD run.

The Huskies’ Kanon Woods kicked his third field goal of the game with 31 seconds left to cap an 11-play, 31-yard drive that gave the Huskies the upset.

Ethan Hampton threw for 198 yards for NIU while Antario Brown rushed for 99.  The Huskies outgained the Irish, 388-286 in total offense.

Notre Dame came into the game as a 27.5-point favorite. There may be 12 teams in the College Football Playoff but this is a loss that will not be erased.

Notre Dame football stunned by Northern Illinois in home opener

The Irish are upset

Notre Dame football wasn’t the best team on the field against Northern Illinois, as the Huskies came into Notre Dame Stadium and upset the No. 5 team in a nation 16-14.

The Irish managed to account for just 267 offensive yards to 388 for NIU. Notre Dame lost the turnover battle 2-0, and couldn’t get off the field during a 11-play, 31-yard drive that ate up 5-minutes and 34-second off the clock.

While there was still 31-seconds left in the game when the Irish got the ball back, they watched a Mitch Jeter 62-yard field goal fall get blocked to stave off the upset. This will be one that many will remember, but for obviously the wrong reasons.

The loss evens Notre Dame’s record at 1-1, as they will undoubtably fall in the rankings.

Notre Dame Week 2 Highlight: Jeremiyah Love hurdles his way to touchdown

Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love gives the Irish the lead back against NIU.

Notre Dame has been struggling with an upset-minded Northern Illinois but running back Jeremiyah Love just put the Fighting Irish back on top for the first time since the first quarter with a 34-yard touchdown run.

The score comes with 8:34 remaining in the fourth quarter and, following the Mitch Jeter extra point, put the Irish up 14-13. Love hurdled a Huskies defender on his way to the end zone.

NIU’s defense had given the Irish offense fits to this point in the game. Love’s run has energized the crowd and given Notre Dame the lead back — we’ll see if it will help the offense get back to the form it showed on the games’ opening drive.
