North Dakota State football’s unreal 39-game winning streak has been snapped

The Bison lost their first game in more than three years!

North Dakota State football’s incredible 39-game win streak is officially over. The Bison are the three-time reigning FCS national champions — they’ve also won eight of the last nine titles for an FCS record total — and their last loss was to South Dakota State on November 4, 2017.

Well, up until Saturday.

On the road against Southern Illinois for its second game of the 2021 spring season, North Dakota State — which is playing without quarterback Trey Lance, who declared for the NFL Draft in October — struggled to keep up with the Salukis. The Bison fell into a 17-0 hole toward the end of the second quarter, but it managed to get a late-half touchdown in to trail by 10 going into halftime.

Unfortunately for the Bison and their outrageous win streak, the second half was tougher than the first with Southern Illinois running away with a 38-14 victory to hand North Dakota State its first loss in more than three years.

The Salukis had the ball for about 23 more minutes than the Bison and finished with 443 total yards compared with North Dakota’s 268 yards.

North Dakota State’s 39-game win streak was the third-longest in Division I history and the longest in the FCS. It broke its own previous FCS record of 33 consecutive wins between 2012 and 2014. The Bison needed just one more W to tie Washington’s record from 1908 to 1914, but Southern Illinois shut that down with a dominant victory.

After so many straight wins, a loss for the Bison is truly unbelievable.

Why North Dakota State Will Win

Turnovers. If Southern Illinois gives them up like it did against North Dakota in the 44-21 loss, there’s going to be a big problem.

The Salukis gave it up five times to offset a good passing day and undoing a good first half. Meanwhile, North Dakota State shook the rust off in a workmanlike win over Youngstown State, holding the Penguins to just 171 yards of total offense – and that’s without any takeaways.

The Bison don’t need any help. If SIU starts to mess up like it did against the Fighting Hawks, this will get out of hand fast. Even without any takeaways, be stunned if SIU comes anywhere close to 100 rushing yards on this group. But …

Why Southern Illinois Will Win

It’s not like the NDSU offense went off.

It was fine in the 25-7 win, and there was never any real drama, but QB Zeb Noland only hit 9-of-18 passes and there weren’t any big shots down the field.

On the other side, SIU’s combination of Nic Baker and Kare Lyles combined to throw for 227 yards and a score against North Dakota, and lost in all of the turnovers was that the offense moved, doing a great job on third downs, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Again, turnovers.

No, SIU isn’t going to give up five against the Bison, but it’s not likely going to win the turnover battle by a big enough margin to pull off the upset.

Yes, Zeb Noland wasn’t amazing, but the NDSU running game was solid, the offensive line was terrific, and the defense was a rock. Don’t expect this to be an earth-shattering Bison performance, but it’ll be a strong road win.

Trey Lance will get one game to show off for NFL scouts in 2020

North Dakota State will play Central Arkansas in October, giving quarterback Trey Lance a showcase game heading into the 2021 NFL Draft

North Dakota State is giving their promising quarterback prospect one game to show off for NFL scouts this season.

The Bison announced Monday that they will play a single game this fall, an October 3rd date with Central Arkansas:

The Missouri Valley Conference in which NDSU plays has cancelled their 2020 schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Bison appear to be making their own plans for a one-night-only showcase for quarterback Trey Lance.

Lance is widely regarded as a potential first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, coming off a redshirt freshman season in which he threw for 28 touchdowns and no interceptions. Bison offensive tackle Dillon Radunz is also a potential first-round prospect in this year’s class, and this game will give him a similar opportunity to show off for pro scouts just one more time before the predraft process begins.

Speaking of those scouts, it appears NDSU is planning to let them attend, per NFL.com’s Chase Goodbread:

From a draft perspective, it’s unlikely Lance will show scouts anything in this game that they haven’t already seen in his film from last season. They already know he can carve up FCS competition, but the real question will be what happens when he goes up against a defense full of NFL-caliber prospects.

As a redshirt sophomore, Lance won’t get the same opportunity former Bison star Carson Wentz got at the Senior Bowl before becoming the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

North Dakota State secures 8th title in 9 years with goal-line INT in final seconds

Bison safety James Hendricks made two huge plays in the FCS championship game.

North Dakota State won its eighth FCS national championship in nine season and extended its outrageous win streak to 37 games thanks, in large part, to James Hendricks.

Sure, football is a team sport, but the Bison senior safety came up with two pivotal plays in the title game against James Madison on Saturday to help carry his team to victory.

At Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, the Dukes were down, 28-20, with the ball and 2:40 seconds left on the fourth-quarter clock. A pass interference call against North Dakota State put James Madison at 1st-and-goal on the three yard line with just eight seconds left in the game.

Enter Hendricks, who picked off quarterback Ben DiNucci on the goal line to essentially end the game and secure a third straight national championship for North Dakota State.

He returned the interception for 20 yards before hitting the ground, and with two seconds left, the Bison took a knee and that was it.

But the last-second interception was the second huge play of the game for Hendricks. Late in the second quarter, North Dakota State lined up to kick a 4th-and-8 field goal with the safety as the holder. Then on a perfectly executed trick play, Hendricks and the Bison pulled off the fake, and he ran it in for a 20-yard touchdown, giving his team a 21-10 halftime lead.

Despite his incredible performance, quarterback Trey Lance was named the game’s most outstanding player, completing 6-of-10 passes for 72 yards with 30 carries for 160 yards and one touchdown. The freshman passer didn’t throw an interception all season.

For the second consecutive season, North Dakota State finished undefeated (16-0) and hasn’t lost a game since November 2017.

North Dakota State stuns James Madison with 20-yard TD off a fake FG

Can’t expect anything less from North Dakota State.

We shouldn’t expect anything less than brilliance from North Dakota State, the team that’s playing for its eighth FCS championship in nine seasons while looking to extend its win streak to an incredible 37 games.

But James Madison was caught off guard Saturday in the championship game at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas when the Bison lined up to kick a field goal late in the first half and instead pulled off a fabulous trick play. On 4th-and-8 on the Dukes’ 20-yard line with just shy of four minutes remaining in the second quarter, North Dakota State looked poised to kick a relatively easy field goal and extend its lead to seven points.

Safety James Hendricks was in position as the holder, but when he got the snap, he took off to the left, and thanks to some perfect blocking by the Bison, he had a wide-open lane to the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown, giving North Dakota State a 21-10 lead.

Earlier in the drive, it looked like the Bison scored a touchdown on 2nd-and-6 with a little less than five minutes left in the half when quarterback Trey Lance connected with tight end Ben Ellefson for an 18-yard score. However, officials dealt North Dakota State an ineligible receiver penalty and moved the team back to the 23-yard line for 2nd-and-11.

A three-yard rush and an incomplete pass, both from Lance, brought the Bison to a fourth down and set up this perfectly executed trick play.

North Dakota State entered halftime with a 21-10 lead over James Madison.
