North Carolina senior Ariel Young retires from basketball

North Carolina women’s basketball senior Ariel Young retires from basketball. However, she will still help the team from the sidelines.

On Monday night, the North Carolina women’s basketball program announced senior [autotag]Ariel Young’s[/autotag] playing career was officially finished.

The news shocked many because North Carolina is on the brink of a push to end the regular season. Young was a pivotal acquisition for UNC, joining the program in 2020 midway through Courtney Banghart’s first season.

In a press release, Banghart spoke about Young and the impact she will still have on the program.

“Ariel has worked so hard to get back on the court and sadly it just isn’t going to happen,” Banghart said. “When you’ve played basketball your whole life, it’s so difficult to see it end, and as a coach it’s excruciating to watch that happen for one of your players. Ariel will absolutely remain just as big a part of our team, and she is adored as she settles into this new role.”

Young spent all last season rehabbing a knee injury suffered during the preseason. Young played three games in December this year but has not seen the court since.

Young’s knowledge of the game will play a significant role for North Carolina as her contributions now come as a voice for a team making strides in the NCAA.

Flu game 2.0? Alyssa Ustby was hooked to an IV before her crucial performance in North Carolina’s win over Duke

Alyssa Ustby or Michael Jordan?

Courtney Banghart was a bit worried Thursday morning.

With a showdown at home against No. 13 Duke looming, the coach of the No. 17 North Carolina Tar Heels got a text hours before the contest that said one of her most important players – leading rebounder Alyssa Ustby – was hooked to an IV.

“And I was like, ‘Oh, God,’” Banghart said.

Ustby had tested negative for COVID and strep throat, but was still feeling very under the weather. But nothing was going to stop the junior forward from playing in a game of this magnitude – a ranked matchup with UNC’s bitter Tobacco Road rivals.

“There was just no option for me,” Ustby said. “I’m not missing out on an opportunity to beat Duke, and just an opportunity to play with my teammates. There’s nothing like it and I’m not going to take a moment of it for granted. So, if I can get healthy and I can play, I’m going to play.”

And so, Ustby played against Duke, and wound up being a key factor in the Tar Heels’ 61-56 victory Thursday night in front of a packed crowd in Chapel Hill’s Carmichael Arena – one that included more than 1,500 students, the most ever in the arena’s history. Ivory Latta, Jessica Breland and rapper Trinidad James were there too.

But Ustby didn’t just simply take the floor against Duke; she played 39 minutes, more than anyone else on either team. The 6-foot-1 forward from Rochester, Minnesota scored 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting and also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“Definitely my version of a ‘Flu Game’,” Ustby said with a laugh, responding to a reporter who compared her to Tar Heel legend Michael Jordan. “Just trying to get as many assists, steals, being active, just doing the things that I do every day. Those are the stuff I’m going to bring whether I have the flu or not… I feel like I can run for days.”

She added: “I think my role was just making sure that Duke’s defense knew that I was making a presence everywhere I was. Whether that was sending a contact ball screen, rolling down to the block, posting somebody… Just trying to make everybody’s job a little bit easier is the role that I love to fill.”

Ustby has been a key player for the Tar Heels all season long, averaging 13.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per game, doing a little bit of everything for Banghart’s squad. According to HerHoopStats, Ustby is also 27th in the nation in defensive win-shares this season with 2.1. And so far in ACC play, she’s 12th in PER with a mark of 23.8.

Last Sunday, Ustby grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds to help the Tar Heels beat then-ranked No. 11 N.C. State. These past two games mark the first time – ever – that UNC has beaten N.C. State and Duke in back-to-back games when both were ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll.

“We just got a bunch of gamers,” Banghart said. “I saw (Ustby) a couple hours later (after the IV), and I was like, ‘We’re alright. She’ll be alright.’”

After an 0-3 start in ACC play, UNC has now won four straight games. Should the Heels stack up more wins and keep improving their resume, they could be hosting opening weekend NCAA Tournament games for the first time since 2015. And Ustby will be a big reason why.

UNC women’s basketball team moves up two spots in the AP Top 25 poll

The North Carolina women’s basketball team moves up two spots to No. 6th ranked in the AP Top 25 poll.

The North Carolina women’s basketball team has been a team to watch this, and thanks to their unblemished start, they earned another leap in the Associated Press Poll.

UNC had a great weekend, winning the Phil Knight inventional over No.5 Iowa State in a 73-64 comeback. Thanks to that win, and their established status, North Carolina has moved into the No. 6 spot in this week’s AP Poll.

UNC has steadily climbed the ranking since the season started. They came in the year ranked 12th, then down to 13th, to move up five spots to eighth last week before moving into the sixth spot this week.

During their 6-0 start, UNC has dominated weaker opponents and secured two wins over top 25 ranked schools, No. 18 Oregon and No.5 Iowa State. The team clicks on all cylinders, with ball movement being the focal point. North Carolina averages 17 assists per game, with a 1.4 assist/turnover ratio.

UNC will be back in action Thursday, December 1st, when they hit the road to take on No.6 Indiana.

UNC women’s basketball team moves up five spots in the AP Top 25 poll

The North Carolina women’s basketball team moves up five spots to No. 8th ranked in the AP Top 25 poll.

The North Carolina women’s basketball team has been flourishing this season and is now seeing some of that paid off by moving up to the eighth spot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

UNC started the season ranked 13th and quickly moved up five spots after their 4-0 start. In those four games, North Carolina did not just slide by…they dominated. They are averaging 83.8 points while holding opposing teams to a 49.3-point average per game.

A key factor to the team’s success has been their lockdown defense and decisive decision-making, averaging 17.7 assists per game. UNC’s defense has been stout, forcing an average of 21.0 turnovers per game.

The team came in with much hype and has lived up to it so far. However, the competition has not been noteworthy. That will change on Thanksgiving when they travel to take on No. 18 Oregon. It will be interesting to see if UNC can deliver a statement game against a top team.

UNC basketball vs. SC State: Game preview, info, prediction and more

We look at what you need to know for the UNC women’s basketball program’s matchup against SC State this Wednesday.

The North Carolina women’s basketball team will finish their three-game home stand against South Carolina State on Wednesday at 11 A.M. Eastern.

UNC has gotten off to a great start, showing complete domination in both games. They opened the season with an impressive 91-59 win over Jackson State, then three days later dominated TCU 75-48.

Their cohesive ball movement has been working for the program, with their team chemistry being the focal point of the success. In their win over TCU, each player in a Carolina uniform scored and five finished with double digits.

As it stands, UNC is ranked 13th in the Associated Press Top 25 polls, but if they can keep up their play, cracking the top 10 won’t take long.

North Carolina women’s basketball guard Alyssa Ustby makes history in the season opener

North Carolina women’s basketball guard Alyssa Ustby makes history in 91-59 season-opening win over Jackson State University.

The UNC women’s basketball program kicked off its season last night in a big way, defeating Jackson State University 91-59. In the massive win, North Carolina’s [autotag]Alyssa Ustby[/autotag] made history in under 20 minutes of playing time.

According to StatsPerform, in the last 15 years, Ustby is the only player in NBA, WNBA, or Division 1 men’s and women’s basketball to produce a stat line of 15+ points, 10+ rebounds, 5+ assists, 2+ blocks, and 2+ steals in a game while playing under 20 minutes.

Ustby flourished in the season opener, finishing with 19 points, ten rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and two steals in 19 minutes. The impressive outing is not new territory for the Junior, as she was critical to North Carolina’s success last year.

If Ustby can continue to the fill stat sheets like this, then UNC has a good shot at delivering one of their best seasons to date.

Kennedy Todd-Williams named to ACC top wings list

North Carolinas Kennedy Todd-Williams was named to ACC’s top five wings for the upcoming 2022-2023 woman’s basketball season.

North Carolina women’s basketball guard [autotag]Kennedy Todd-Williams[/autotag] has received some off-season praise heading into the 2022-2023 season.

UNC is coming off a strong 25-7 season, dancing to NCAA’s sweet 16. Despite the sour 69-61 ending to the eventual champion South Carolina Gamecocks, North Carolina has plenty to build on with high expectations.

Now, to go along with that excitement in the air is a nice confidence boost to Todd-Williams after she was named to Kelly Gramlich’s top five wings in the ACC. Finishing just second to NC States Jakia Brown-Turner, this ranking showcases Todd-Williams’s talents.

The junior from Jacksonville, North Carolina, played a significant role in UNCs success last year, averaging 10.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. Her best game came in the second round of the NCAA tournament when she finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, helping UNC beat Arizona 63-45.

Todd-Williams’s role on the team this season is expected to be significant as she will be counted on to help lead UNC to a potential national championship.
