Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. Marshall

Not exactly numbers to be trusted after only one week.

Notre Dame can’t possibly figure out what kind of team it has after opening the season against Ohio State. Everyone knew the Buckeyes were the superior team, and they proved. Therefore, the numbers the Irish have below should be taken with a grain of salt, especially since they remain highly ranked. Hopefully sometime over the next couple of weeks, these numbers will reflect a winning team a lot more.

Marshall’s first game against Norfolk State was utter dominance, and you can see that in the numbers it has. However, going from a Football Championship Subdivision program to one like the Irish is about as monumental a step as one can take on the schedule, and the Herd are taking it. The numbers you’re looking at now likely is as good as it will get for the Herd this season. If you’re a Herd fan visiting our site (and thanks if you are), let it soak in from now until kickoff in South Bend.

Marshall vs Norfolk State Game Preview

Why Norfolk State Will Win

The Spartans can run the ball.

They have a nice blend coming into the season with RB JJ Davis to help keep the chains moving to lead an offense that averaged 33 points per game.

Marshall’s offense has to pick it back up after a rough finish to 2021, the offensive line is rebuilding a bit, and Norfolk State should be tough enough to control the clock for long stretches – it held the ball for close to 34 minutes per game last year.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Marshall Will Win

The Thundering Herd defense will bring the pressure.

They come from all sides on defense, and that leads to a pass defense that’s once again going to be among the best in the country at keeping the big plays to a minimum while forcing a slew of mistakes.

Norfolk State might be able to run the ball, but it’s replacing seven starters, the offense isn’t going to press the passing game deep, and Marshall should be better than it seems running it early on.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Norfolk State has the defense to keep this from getting out of hand for a while, and it’ll grind down the clock a bit, but Marshall will look good on both sides of the ball in the second half to put this away.

It’ll be a bit of a fight for a while, but the Spartans won’t be able to close out enough drives with points.

6 First Round upsets worth betting on in the 2022 NCAA Tournament

Who will be this year’s Oral Roberts?

They don’t call it March Chalk-ness.

That would be way too clunky and doesn’t quite roll of the tongue. In fact, it makes it sound like Kansas wins the whole thing every year. No, no, it’s the madness were all here for—and that means knowing the upsets are coming and still being shocked when they happen.

Each year, without failure, a handful of teams rise up and make a few bettors look like geniuses for grabbing their moneyline odds while the rest of us rip up our brackets.

In 2021, it was No. 15 Oral Roberts and Max Abmas taking down Ohio State as +950 underdogs. This year there are a number of teams who could have similar performances this year in the First Round. Let’s run through them and sprinkle a few ML bets.

NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

People couldn’t get over the excessive number of 3-point lines in MEAC championship game

For those watching the MEAC Championship, they couldn’t help but get distracted by the excessive number of 3-point lines on the court.

With March Madness upon us, it’s championship week in college basketball where some teams will be looking for one last push to punch their ticket into the NCAA tournament while others await their bracketed fate.

There was plenty of exciting action on Saturday with the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and Pac-12 all playing some big games. But the MEAC also hosted its championship game between Norfolk State and Morgan State, where Norfolk State won 71-63 and secured a spot in the NCAA tournament.

But for those people watching the MEAC Championship, they couldn’t help but get distracted by the fact that were an excessive number of 3-point lines on the court at Norfolk Scope Arena.

The court at Norfolk Scope Arena has four separate 3-point lines for high school, men’s college, women’s college and NBA. But it was still awfully distracting, especially for those on the court.

At one point, the refs had to review one of the 3-pointers where a player had his toe on the NBA line, which was well behind the college line.

But considering Norfolk State and Morgan State combined 10-of-40 from behind the 3-point line — the actual 3-point line in this game — you can’t help but wonder if it was a tad confusing for the players, as well.
