6 former 49ers team should target in free agency

There are some former 49ers available in free agency who make sense to return to the red and gold:

Free agency got a little more interesting for the 49ers on Thursday when the NFL announced a whopping $255.4 million salary cap for the 2024 season.

While San Francisco has some maneuvering to do to create additional cap space, they’re now conceivably in a position to be more active in the free agent market.

A big move could be on the horizon, but it’s more likely the 49ers will live on the edges of free agency and scooping up some players who add depth instead of trying to locate a high-priced player to plug a bigger roster hole.

There are a handful of available players on the market who are not only unlikely to break the bank, but are familiar faces that could help the 49ers in various ways.

Here are six former 49ers the team should look to re-sign in free agency:

49ers announce 4 more free agent signings

The #49ers added 4 more free agent signings:

The 49ers on Tuesday announced nine free agent signings to kick off their 2024 offseason. Then Wednesday they made four more signings official.

So far all 13 signees were players who finished the year on San Francisco’s practice squad.

Here’s a look at the four new players signed by the 49ers on Wednesday:

The Steelers need to give Steve Wilks the Brian Flores deal

The Steelers could bring Steve Wilks in as a defensive assistant this season.

In 2022, current Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores was fresh off of a stint as the Miami Dolphins head coach and when he needed an opportunity, the Pittsburgh Steelers gave it to him. Flores was named the team’s Senior defensive assistant and his impact was obvious on the defense.

Now, the Steelers have an opportunity to do it again after leaving the spot vacant for a year. Fresh off a trip to the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Wilks was added as something of an outsider in the Niners organization and despite how well his defense performed last season, he’s out.

This is a perfect opportunity for the Steelers to bring in another great football mind to help with a defense that underperformed last season. Wilks has been a coach in the NFL since 2006 and has done a little bit of everything including head coach of the Arizona Cardinals for one season.

When was the last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl?

It’s been ~30~ years since the #49ers last won a Super Bowl, but there are a ton of coincidences that line up this year’s club with their last Super Bowl winner:

The 49ers historically have helped define NFL postseason success. They dominated the 1980s and early 1990s and won all five of their Super Bowl trips in that span. Getting their sixth has proven to be a long, difficult road.

San Francisco on Sunday will be in its third Super Bowl since the 2012 season, but they haven’t won a Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 season.

In 1994 the 49ers were loaded and after three NFC championship losses in four years finally got over the hump in Super Bowl XXIX, thumping the Chargers 49-26.

Now they find themselves in a similar position. In the last four years they have a Super Bowl loss and two consecutive NFC championship losses, and they enter this Super Bowl with a loaded roster.

If history continues repeating itself and the 49ers can knock off an AFC West team in the Super Bowl, it will end a 30-year championship drought for San Francisco.

Do it for the Bay: Warriors coach Steve Kerr delivers Super Bowl prediction

“Go Niners.”

While the San Francisco 49ers were prepping for the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Golden State Warriors hosted Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns in a primetime battle at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

Before the game, Kerr showed support for the 49ers. The Warriors coach wore a red 49ers quarter zip in front of the media at the pregame press conference on Saturday.

When asked if he has a Super Bowl prediction, the four-time NBA champion coach didn’t hesitate to deliver. Kerr quickly pointed to the 49ers emblem on his quarter-zip, saying, “Right here, go Niners.”

Warriors’ Steve Kerr reveals Super Bowl prediction

The Warriors head coach is supporting the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl.

On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers will represent the Bay Area in Las Vegas at the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs. Before Brock Purdy squares off against Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the Golden State Warriors will take center stage in San Francisco in a prime-time battle against Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal and the Phoenix Suns.

However, prior to the tip, Steve Kerr made a point to show support for his Bay Area neighbors. Kerr showed up to the pregame press conference on Saturday wearing a red 49ers quarter-zip.

When asked to reveal his Super Bowl prediction, the Warriors’ coach gave a quick and simple response.

49ers Super Bowl roster moves: 2 DL elevated from practice squad

The #49ers made a couple roster moves before the Super Bowl:

The 49ers on Saturday elevated practice squad defensive linemen TY McGill and Alex Barrett ahead of Super Bowl LVIII. They also downgraded second-year defensive tackle Kalia Davis from questionable to out. He’ll end the season on IR.

McGill and Barrett are likely up so they can get a full game check by being on the active roster. With their health fully intact the 49ers have been able to reward some of their season-long practice squad players with a gameday roster spot. If that’s the case with McGill and Barrett they’d be inactive for the game.

However, given the 49ers’ trouble with stopping the run, it’s not out of the question that they’ll have an extra DL active to try and bolster their depth up front.

We’ll find out the exact plan for McGill and Barrett 90 minutes before Sunday’s 3:30pm Pacific Time kickoff when the club announces its list of inactives for the game.

Behind Enemy Lines: Super Bowl LVIII edition

Get to know what the #49ers are facing Sunday when they square off against the Kansas City Chiefs:

The 49ers and Chiefs faced off in the Super Bowl just four seasons ago, and they met again last season at Levi’s Stadium. Despite a couple of recent meetings, both teams enter Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday pretty dramatically different from either of those other matchups.

To get a better grasp on what Kansas City has done this season, we hit up Chiefs Wire editor John Dillon to get his insight on the 49ers’ Super Bowl opponent:

Super Bowl LVIII: 3 (plus 1) reasons for optimism for 49ers

Here are a few reasons for optimism that the #49ers will win the Super Bowl:

The 49ers are good, yet there seems to be a prevailing thought that the existence of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is enough to offset any talent advantage San Francisco might have. It helps that the Chiefs’ run to the postseason has been more impressive than the 49ers’ in terms of point differential, but playoff success prior to the Super Bowl isn’t an indicator of performance in the big game.

Let’s run through some of the reasons for optimism on the 49ers’ side:

49ers jerseys selling like crazy since end of regular season

These figures on #49ers merchandise sales over the last month are crazy.

The 49ers’ national appeal is always apparent when San Francisco plays on the road. Even in the most hostile environments there’s a visible amount of red and gold dotted in the crowd.

Quantifying a team’s popularity is tough, but one way we can do so is via merchandise and jersey sales. If those are key indicators, the 49ers are perhaps the most popular football team in the country.

Sports business reporter Joe Pompliano had some eye-popping numbers about San Francisco’s merch sales over the last month or so. He reported on Twitter that the club has done $25 million in merchandise sales in the last two weeks.

This is pretty wild!

It makes a lot of sense though. Fans may have been waiting to buy Brock Purdy or Christian McCaffrey jerseys and used the Super Bowl trip as an excuse to do so.

The Super Bowl’s proximity to the 49ers might also be playing a role. Fans heading to Las Vegas for the game may have wanted to gear up in support of their club if they were going to go through the process of actually getting to the host city.

49ers fan support in Vegas during the week-long leadup to the game has been loud, and now it appears fans are cheering with their wallets as well.
