Ryan Spann reacts to UFC Fight Night 220 main event cancelation due to Nikita Krylov illness

Ryan Spann displayed a range of emotions while processing the fight-day cancelation of his scheduled main event at UFC Fight Night 220.

UFC light heavyweight contender [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] was understandably upset after finding out he would not be fighting against [autotag]Nikita Krylov[/autotag].

Spann (21-7 MMA, 7-2 UFC) was scheduled to face Krylov (29-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) in the main event of UFC Fight Night 220, but the fight was scratched just hours before the bout. Krylov came down with a foodborne illness, and despite receiving fluids and treatment throughout the day, was determined to be unfit to compete.

Spann was going through his usual fight day routine including the completion of his pre-fight urine test for USADA when his coach Sayif Saud and UFC officials came to deliver the bad news.

“I had USADA in the back, and my coach stormed in yelling for me,” Spann told MMA Junkie and other reporters backstage. “It was him, Hunter (Campbell) and Sean (Shelby) letting me know that I wasn’t going to be able to fight.”

Despite losing a fight that could get him closer to a title shot, Spann wasn’t discouraged by completing an entire fight camp just for the fight to fall apart on fight day.

“I wouldn’t call it a wasted camp because we weren’t training for this specific fight,” Spann said. “We’re in champ camp. The plan was to go back to work Monday either way. So I guess that’s what we’re going to have to do. So, it isn’t wasted. The disappointment comes from me not getting to show off some of the sh*t we’ve been doing.”

[lawrence-related id=2618859,2618995]

That’s when tears began to flow as Spann processed the thoughts of the time that others put in to help him prepare for a fight against Krylov that resulted in a cancelation.

“They invested a lot of time in me and I wanted to be able to pay them back with a beautiful performance,” Spann said.

Spann checked in on Krylov while backstage to share a few respectful words with his light heavyweight peer. Both fighters understood they wanted to perform in the main event spotlight, but the opportunity was taken away due to unfortunate circumstances. For now, it’s back to work in the training room to prepare for whatever comes next for Spann.

“Sh*t happens, that’s what my brother always says,” Spann said. “It’s just – f*ck.”

Nikita Krylov out of UFC Fight Night 220 main event vs. Ryan Spann due to illness

A fight-day illness has forced Nikita Krylov out of the UFC Fight Night 220 main event against Ryan Spann.

A fight-day illness has caused the main event of UFC Fight Night 220 to be scratched.

Light heavyweight [autotag]Nikita Krylov[/autotag] is unable to compete against [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] in the scheduled main event at the UFC Apex due to an illness, according to an announcement on the ESPN+ broadcast.

According to UFC reporter Megan Olivi, Krylov (29-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) arrived at the facilities early to receive fluids and treatment for a foodborne illness, but was determined to be unhealthy to fight.

As a result, Spann (21-7 MMA, 7-2 UFC) is left without an opponent, and the middleweight bout between Andre Muniz and Brenan Allen has been elevated to the new main event.

Spann was seeking his third-straight victory on the heels of two first-round finishes of Ion Cutelaba and Dominick Reyes. At media day, he revealed the UFC initially contacted him to be in the mix for the light heavyweight title, but the promotion went another direction.

Krylov was also looking for his third win in a row. Last year, he finished former title challenger Alexander Gustafsson in the first round, followed by a unanimous decision win over Volkan Oezdemir.

The late change will see Allen (20-5 MMA, 8-2 UFC) and Muniz (23-4 MMA, 5-0 UFC) compete in their first UFC main event.

UFC Fight Night 220: Nikita Krylov vs. Ryan Spann odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 220 odds between Nikita Krylov vs. Ryan Spann, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a light heavyweight bout in the main event, Nikita Krylov takes on Ryan Spann Saturday at UFC Fight Night 220 — also known as UFC Vegas 70 — at UFC APEX in Las Vegas. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC Fight Night 220: Krylov vs. Spann odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims are on ESPN+ starting at 4:30 p.m. ET with the main card on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET.

Krylov has registered a pair of victories since his most recent loss in March 2022. He rebounded from the 1st-round submission loss to Paul Craig with a 1st-round KO/TKO against Alexander Gustafsson in July and earned a unanimous-decision victory against Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 280 in October.

Spann is in a similar boat, posting 2 straight wins after a 1st-round submission loss against Anthony Smith in Sept. 2021. He submitted Ion Cutelaba in May 2022 and knocked out Dominick Reyes at UFC 281 in November. Each of his last 5 fights has ended via 1st-round stoppage, with a pair of knockout wins and a submission victory, while losing once via each method.

UFC Fight Night 220: Krylov vs. Spann picks and predictions

Records: Krylov (29-9-0) | Spann (21-7-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

SPANN (+145) is a value play as a moderate underdog in the main event.

He has a pair of 1st-round stoppage wins in his last 2 fights, and has 5 wins via stoppage in his previous 8 outings. He holds a decent 1.5-inch reach advantage and should be able to keep Krylov at somewhat of a distance, picking and choosing his spots when the fighters are upright.

Krylov holds a 4.45-to-3.42 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, and he is far more accurate. But Spann is a knockout machine, and a good bet to earn a quick victory if things break the right way.

Over/Under (O/U)

No (-750): Fight to go the distance is way too overpriced, costing you 7 1/2 times your potential return. The books are nearly certain this one isn’t going to go the distance. Instead, consider a method of victory pick instead.

I like Spann to get it done, and it’s a great idea to pick SPANN BY TKO/KO (+310) for a chance to triple up. In his past 6 wins, 3 have come via knockout, so that’s your best bet.

UFC free fight: Ryan Spann starches Dominick Reyes in 80 seconds

Ahead of his headliner vs. Nikita Krylov, relive Ryan Spann’s finish of Dominick Reyes at UFC 281.

[autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] scored his third consecutive first-round finish when he welcomed Dominick Reyes back to the octagon.

The Fortis MMA fighter faced Reyes last November at UFC 281 at Madison Square Garden in New York, and it didn’t take him long to stop the former title challenger.

Spann was able to immediately hurt Reyes, tagging him with an overhand right followed by a stiff left jab. A slip by Reyes allowed Spann to latch onto his neck for a standing guillotine, but Reyes broke free. Shortly after, Spann caught Reyes coming in with a lightening fast left shot, which put him out cold. The follow-up on the ground landed, but Reyes was already out.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Don’Tale Mayes[/autotag] (9-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) fights [autotag]Augusto Sakai[/autotag] (15-5-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) in a heavyweight bout that is the most contentious among our staff members, and it’s still a relative blowout. Sakai is just a slight favorite at -130, but he has a big 8-3 lead from our pickers.

Our lone unanimous pick on the main card is [autotag]Tatiana Suarez[/autotag] (8-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC), who is a massive 8-1 favorite over [autotag]Montana De La Rosa[/autotag] (12-7-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) in their women’s flyweight fight.

Video: Ryan Spann can’t contain laughter in UFC Fight Night 220 faceoff with Nikita Krylov

Ryan Spann could not hold in his laughter when he faced off with Nikita Krylov for the first time ahead of UFC Fight Night 220.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Nikita Krylov[/autotag] and [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] came face-to-face for the first time Friday ahead of the UFC Fight Night 220 main event.

After making weight at official weigh-ins, Krylov (28-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) and Spann (21-7 MMA, 7-2 UFC) engaged in their lone pre-fight faceoff ahead of Saturday’s light heavyweight headliner, which takes place at the UFC Apex and streams on ESPN+.

Check out the video of the staredown above.

As expected, both men were civil when they got in front of each other. It bordered on friendly, in fact, because while Spann did his signature pose of looking down at his opponent, he started laughing uncontrollably. Krylov was amused, as well, cracking a smile before they moved off stage.

Nikita Krylov validated by main event spot at UFC Fight Night 220: ‘It means that I’m progressing’

Nikita Krylov is over the moon to be headlining a UFC card.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Nikita Krylov[/autotag]’s return to the cage will be more than just another fight in his lengthy career.

The veteran UFC light heavyweight competes this Saturday against Ryan Spann at UFC Fight Night 220, which takes place at the UFC Apex and streams on ESPN+. This 205-pound matchup serves as the main event of the card, something Krylov (29-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) is very excited and proud about being his first headlining role in the company.

“It’s a big deal for me,” Krylov told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 220 media day on Wednesday. “It’s the first main event for me. I feel myself great. I’ve had a great camp, good acclimatization, and now I just wait for Saturday.”

For Krylov, it’s more than just having his face on the poster and being able to say he fought main event of a UFC card. This headlining bout against Spann (21-7 MMA, 7-2 UFC) is a sign of progression for Krylov.

“It means that I’m progressing, that I’m moving forward, and I’m not just staying in one place,” Krylov explained. “It means the organization is seeing what I’m doing and believes in me and trust me to main event in such an important organization, so I think it’s great. I feel great about it.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=420030788]

As far as the opponent, Krylov is also happy to be fighting someone like Spann. Although he admits the chance to be the top billing of a card was deal maker for this fight.

“I want fights with guys who are higher than me in the rankings because I want contender fights, but when my manager sent me, ‘I have main event for Ryan Spann,’ that’s first for me, so listen it’s a main event, so it’s good,” Krylov said. “That’s why Spann is Ok. He’s a tough guy, interesting fight.”
