Cowboys waive FB Nick Ralston to make room for reinstated La’el Collins on 53-man roster

The rookie fullback had just been added to the active roster Saturday; he may end up back on the Cowboys practice squad. | From @ToddBrock24f7

La’el Collins was reinstated by the league Monday after serving a five-game suspension. But in order to add him back to the Cowboys’ 53-man roster, a spot would have to be cleared.

On Tuesday, it was announced that fullback Nick Ralston has been waived in order to accommodate Collins’s return.

Collins was suspended for violating the league’s substance abuse policy in a ruling that came down after the Week 1 loss in Tampa. Collins fought the suspension, but his appeal was denied. During the court battle, allegations came to light that the offensive tackle had missed mandatory tests and attempted to bribe a vendor hired by the league to collect urine samples.

He’ll be available to play in the team’s next game, October 31 in Minnesota, but Terence Steele has played well in his absence.

Ralston, an undrafted free agent in his rookie season, was just signed to the active roster on what was said to be a two-year contract the day before the Cowboys’ meeting with the Patriots, after multiple weeks of being elevated from the practice squad for gameday.

Cornerback Isaiah Johnson was let go from the practice squad on Tuesday, meaning Ralston could take his spot there if he clears waivers. It would mark quite a 5-day rollercoaster ride for the 24-year-old Texas native.

Cowboys waive O-lineman, sign 2 practice squad players to 53-man roster

Brandon Knight had played just 3 snaps this season; TE Jeremy Sprinkle and FB Nick Ralston have been regular special teams contributors. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys did a bit of roster business just ahead of their date with the Patriots. Two players are being signed to the 53-man roster after seeing heavy special teams action through five weeks, and the release of one depth player may signal good news for a decorated superstar regarding his availability for Week 6.

Offensive tackle Brandon Knight was informed by the club on Saturday that he will be waived. The undrafted free agent out of Indiana has been on the field for just three snaps so far this season, all in the Cowboys’ Week 3 win over Philadelphia.

But the timing of his release may indicate that left tackle Tyron Smith will, in fact, be ready to start Sunday’s contest. The seven-time Pro Bowler was given a “questionable” designation on Friday’s injury report after a neck scare left him limited late in the week. An MRI came back “favorable,” but the Cowboys have officially maintained a wait-and-see approach with his status for this week’s matchup.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, Knight “is expected to join the practice squad Monday if he clears waivers, but [there is] no guarantee he goes unclaimed.”

Meanwhile, rookie fullback Nick Ralston and veteran tight end Jeremy Sprinkle are receiving contracts and being added to the regular roster after multiple weeks of practice squad elevations for both.

Both have contributed significantly to the third phase for Dallas this season; Ralston has logged nearly one-third of the club’s special teams snaps through Week 5 and will be signed to a two-year deal. Sprinkle has played almost half of the special teams snaps and has also been on the field for smattering of offensive plays.

Cowboys make roster moves for Week 4 game vs Carolina

WR Malik Turner, DT Justin Hamilton, and FB Nick Ralston are among those who will be active for Sunday afternoon’s date with the Panthers. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys made several roster tweaks on Saturday, just ahead of their Week 4 meeting with the Carolina Panthers.

Wide receiver Malik Turner, fresh off injured reserve, has been officially activated for Sunday’s game. Defensive tackles Justin Hamilton and Austin Faoliu were called up from the practice squad as well, with Dorance Armstong and Carlos Watkins declared out.

Tight end Jeremy Sprinkle will be a COVID-19 replacement for the fourth week in a row; fullback Nick Ralston also gets the elevation treatment for the second straight game.

Each of the players listed have suited up for Dallas before, save for Faoliu. The Oregon rookie played saw action in three of the team’s four preseason games; Sunday will mark his NFL regular season debut.

Cowboys elevate TE Sprinkle, DT Hamilton, FB Ralston for MNF vs Eagles

Sprinkle and Hamilton will be COVID replacements for Keanu Neal and Bradlee Anae; the undrafted rookie Ralston will make his NFL debut. | From@ToddBrock24f7

With just a few hours to go before the Cowboys’ Week 3 game at AT&T Stadium, the team has made a handful of roster additions for the home opener against Philadelphia.

Dallas has elevated tight end Jeremy Sprinkle, defensive tackle Justin Hamilton, and fullback Nick Ralston from the practice squad to the active roster for Monday night’s matchup. The winner will take an early lead in the NFC East.

Sprinkle and Hamilton are considered COVID-19 exemptions for linebacker Keanu Neal and defensive end Bradlee Anae.

Sprinkle has been elevated for each of the Cowboys’ three games thus far. He has played only sparingly on offense, but has been on the field for about half of the club’s special teams snaps.

Hamilton saw action in each of the Cowboys’ preseason games in 2021. He logged six tackles over those four games, recording a sack versus Arizona and forcing a fumble against Jacksonville. He played in 10 games for Dallas last season.

For the undrafted rookie and local product Ralston, Monday night’s game will mark his NFL debut.

Moose Crossing? Nick Ralston’s path to Cowboys’ 53-man roster may be paved with history

An unknown rookie fullback grinds for a spot on the 53-man roster in an effort to revitalize the position for the Cowboys. | From @TimLettiero

Nick Ralston is an unfamiliar name to many fans of the Dallas Cowboys, however his story is one to remember. Born in Argyle, Texas, a small city on the outskirts of Dallas, Ralston is familiar with AT&T Stadium. A lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, his high school team played in three state championships in Jerry’s World.

He attended Arizona State University where he would see targets out of the backfield and carry the rock on his way to over 200 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns in his four seasons there. Ralston looked to Louisiana-Lafayette as a graduate transfer where he’d see more time as a tight end. Coming out for the Covid-riddled 2020 draft, Ralston saw little opportunity so he decided to hold off until the 2021 draft to declare. This gap year allowed for the video of him pulling a truck to go viral and create some buzz around his name. Ralston went undrafted but got calls immediately, one of them being from the Cowboys.

The next player in our player profile countdown is No. 46, Nick Ralston.

From pulling trucks to trucking linebackers, FB Nick Ralston relishes throwback role with Cowboys

The UDFA hopes to land a job as the Cowboys’ fullback, an unglamorous role that the 24-year-old Texas native trained for in an unusual way. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Life in today’s NFL is tough for a fullback. Once a standard role on every team, the full-time fullback has become a rarity among rosters of the modern era. Never mind that many of the greatest rushers the sport has ever seen are actually being mislabeled today when they’re called running backs. Earl Campbell. John Riggins. Franco Harris. Jim Brown. All were, technically speaking, fullbacks.

These days, though, it’s an unglamorous job that’s viewed as an old-fashioned relic of the way the game used to be once upon a time. Three yards and a cloud of dust and all that. That’s actually the way Cowboys fullback Nick Ralston likes it.

“I think I’m more of a throwback guy,” the 24-year-old undrafted free agent said Thursday in Frisco. “Somebody who’s extremely tough, does the dirty work. I can do some things out of the backfield, but I think the one thing that is one of my best traits is how physical I am, the willingness to run head-first into a linebacker.”

Cowboys fans, of course, are conjuring up mental images of Daryl Johnston as they read that. The tough-as-nails fullback they called “Moose” made a ten-year career out of plowing a road for the league’s all-time leading rusher. The NFL even created a fullback position in the Pro Bowl because of his contributions to the Dallas dynasty of the ’90s. But Ralston was just three years old when Johnston retired from football, so he’s not necessarily trying to step into anybody’s shoes… even though he’s no doubt aware of the best fullback in team history.

“I grew up a Cowboys fan my whole life,” Ralston admitted.

A Texas native, his Argyle high school team played in three state championships during Ralston’s time there. So even though he’s a rookie, he’s no stranger to AT&T Stadium.

“The last time I was in there before this past game [the Cowboys’ preseason game last week versus Houston] was state finals my senior year. Double-overtime loss, and I had 54 carries. That left a bitter taste in my mouth, so to get back there and to be on that field was special for me.”

Ralston was not selected in the 2021 NFL draft. He received phone calls from multiple teams minutes after the draft ended, but chose to sign with Dallas. It was the beginning of a new chapter, coming finally at the conclusion of a rather uncertain one.

“It’s been a long journey,” Ralston explained. “I graduated high school early, went out to Arizona State for four years and ended up grad-transferring my last year to Louisiana-Lafayette and then did well there. And then COVID hit and shut down pro days, so I had to train for another year. To put in all that work for an additional year by myself- every day, six hours in the gym and on the field- to see that I’m here? It’s just a blessing from God, and every day, I’m taking advantage of my opportunity.”

But even if Cowboys fans don’t know Ralston by name, there’s a good chance they’ve seen him. Because he wasn’t only in the gym and on the field during the pandemic.

“I was pulling trucks,” Ralston laughed about his workout that blew up on social media back in 2020. “You didn’t see that video?”

But Ralston knows it will take more than a viral stunt to survive the final round of roster cuts in Dallas. It will take exceptional special teams play.

“I think that definitely is the key to getting on the 53-man roster,” Ralston said. “I’ve got to be versatile on offense as well as special teams. But I think with my body type and skill set, I can play a lot of different positions on multiple phases.”

Ralston may have a leg up due to fullback Sewo Olonilua’s season-ending injury, but that doesn’t mean he has a foot in the door. The rookie has been leaning heavily on the mentoring he’s been getting from the A-list veteran he shares a backfield with.

“Zeke is so intelligent, and he’s so helpful. I’m just trying to absorb everything from him like a sponge. We’re in the film room, and he’s coaching me up at fullback,” Ralston said of Ezekiel Elliott. “He’s given me tips on run-blocking, creating space, pad level, pass protection. He was coaching me up today on route-running. He’s a special back, and he’s a good guy. He really treats the rookies well.”

In return, Ralston hopes for the chance to do right by Elliott on Sundays, putting his own body on the line to open up holes for the two-time rushing champ.

And the young fullback relishes the opportunity to fulfill that throwback job description… and maybe truck a few opposing defenders in the process.

“I think that’s just something that’s been ingrained in me since I was a young kid doing Oklahoma drills,” Ralston said, grinning as he double-tapped his forehead right where the bumper pad of his helmet would be. “Just put your two screws into their chest and blow them up.”

Nick Ralston’s eyes may have actually twinkled when he said it. Just in case there was any doubt as to whether or not he’s a true fullback.

RB Rico Dowdle lands on IR, ending season, here’s who Cowboys may turn to

The Dallas Cowboys lost their second running back for the year when they placed Rico Dowdle on injured reserve. Who might step into the void? | From @StarConscience

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the best running back tandems in the NFL. Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard form an explosive and productive duo and  were responsible for almost all the touches from the position in 2020.

Only one other RB got carry last season, rookie runner Rico Dowdle who toted the rock seven times for 24 yards. There weren’t many opportunities for anyone else, but the University of South Carolina product worked his way from an undrafted free agent to making the roster and playing in 15 games, mostly on special teams.

Dowdle came into training camp third on the depth chart and had played well enough to keep his spot. However, an injured hip has forced the Cowboys to put Dowdle in IR, ending his season.

It’s tough break for the Cowboys, who were likely to start the season with Elliott, Pollard and Dowdle as their top three backs again this year. Dowdle had shown enough in the preseason to earn that role, leading Dallas with 99 yards rushing in their three exhibitions games thus far.

Although it’s not a crushing blow to a team that has arguably the best one-two punch in the league at RB, the Cowboys will now be looking elsewhere to fill the RB room and their depth chart has taken another hit.

Dowdle became the second Cowboys RB to lose his season to injury, joining Sewo Olonilua, who was placed on season-ending IR with a neck injury last week. A group that had already been whittled down to three strong runners, will now be looking for a replacement for Dowdle.

The main options for the Cowboys now are two undrafted rookie free agents, JaQuan Hardy out of Tiffin, and Brenden Knox from Marshall. Both RBs have seen ample opportunities in the preseason and will have another game to prove they belong on the 53-man roster. Hardy has gotten more carries through three games, but there’s a lot riding in the preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The extra exhibition game for Dallas is now a blessing in disguise for these two runners.

Or the team could go in a different direction, choosing to keep Louisiana-Lafayette fullback Nick Ralston, another undrafted rookie free agent.

There is also the option of a trade or sifting through waivers after teams cut their rosters down to 53 players next Tuesday. The Cowboys are only likely to keep three on the roster and they are doubtful to receive much playing time.

Losing Dowdle is another blow to a position for the Cowboys where they once had depth. Running back is still a strength for Dallas but they’ll have to find another option behind their two-headed monster.
