Rams hiring former Seahawks OL coach to replace Nick Caley as TEs coach

The Rams have found their replacement for Nick Caley, hiring Scott Huff to be their new TEs coach

The Los Angeles Rams lost Nick Caley this offseason when he was hired as the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator but it didn’t take them long to find his replacement. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Rams are hiring former Seahawks offensive line coach Scott Huff as their new tight ends coach.

Huff spent last year coaching Seattle’s offensive linemen after stints at both the University of Washington and Boise State. He originally joined Washington’s coaching staff as the offensive line coach in 2017 and spent seven years there until he joined the Seahawks in 2024.

Before Washington, he coached the offensive line, tight ends and was even a special teams coordinator at Boise State.

In addition to coaching the Rams’ tight ends, Caley was also the pass game coordinator. It remains to be seen if Los Angeles will hire someone to assume that role, as well.

Grade the move: Texans hire Rams assistant Nick Caley as new offensive coordinator

What do you think of the hiring of Texans new offensive coordinator Nick Caley down in H-Town?

The Houston Texans have their new play-caller.

According to multiple reports, the Texans plan to hire Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator.

He’ll replace Bobby Slowik, who was fired after two seasons with the AFC South franchise.

Caley, 42, previously interviewed for the offensive coordinator position in 2023 before Texans coach DeMeco Ryans ultimately decided to hire Slowik, according to multiple reports. He previously interviewed for both the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers open positions as well.

Before joining forces with Sean McVay and Matt Stafford, Caley spent time working closely with Texans general manager Nick Caserio in New England. He previously served as the tight ends coach and fullbacks coach under Bill Belichick from 2015 until the 2022 season.

Caley and Caserio both went to John Carroll University.

The top task for the new play-caller will be to build a relationship with third-year quarterback C.J. Stroud, who suffered a sophomore slump in 2024 after guiding the Texans to a second AFC South division title.

He’ll also be tasked with fixing an offensive line that allowed 54 sacks last season, which was third-most in the league last year.

His rapport with the tight end position should lead to better results from Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover after an underwhelming campaign last fall.

Grade the Texans' hiring of Rams assistant Nick Caley

Texans to hire Rams assistant Nick Caley as offensive coordinator

The Houston Texans have their new offensive coordinator in Nick Caley from the Los Angeles Rams.

The Houston Texans have found their next play-caller.

According to reports, the Texans plan to hire Rams tight end coach and passing-game coordinator Nick Caley as their next offensive coordinator.

Caley, a fan-favorite to land the job, will replace Bobby Slowik, who was fired after two seasons.

Caley, 42, was one of the top names on the market this offseason after two seasons with Los Angeles. He was rumored to be the favorite to land the New York Jets offensive coordinator position. He interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator opening last week following Liam Coen’s departure to Jacksonville.

Caley joined the Rams ahead of the 2023 season after spending six seasons as the tight ends/fullbacks coach for the New England Patriots. He’s considered one of the top influences in developing All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski entering the back half of his career.

In Caley’s first season, Gronkowski led all tight ends in receiving yards (1,084) and yards per reception (15.7) while earning his fifth Pro Bowl nod. He was also named an AP First-Team All-Pro selection.

That same season, fullback James Develin earned his first Pro Bowl nod under Caley’s watch.

As the pass-game coordinator, Caley spent time with Matthew Stafford, who posted strong numbers en route to a division title. The veteran quarterback finished with 20 touchdown passes against eight interceptions and completed 65.8% of his pass attempts.

Caley’s work with tight ends should benefit the Texans, too. Under his teaching last year, Tyler Higbee broke multiple franchise records for Los Angeles, including surpassing Harold Jackson for 14th all-time receiving yards.

Higbee also passed Jack Snow and Elroy Hirsch, moving into ninth all-time in franchise history in receptions.

Since Caley’s arrival, Higbee’s totaled 55 catches for 461 yards and four touchdowns, though he was limited most of the 2024 season after suffering a torn ACL late last year.

Caley went to John Carroll University, the same alma mater as Texans’ general manager Nick Caserio. He was in New England during Caserio’s time before he departed for Houston in 2021.

Texans are hiring Rams TEs coach Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator

Another one of Sean McVay’s assistants is moving on to become a coordinator elsewhere

After two years in Los Angeles, Nick Caley is already on his way out. The Rams’ tight ends coach and passing game coordinator is being hired as the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator on DeMeco Ryans’ staff.

Caley previously spent eight years with the New England Patriots from 2015-2022 before being hired by the Rams in 2023 as their tight ends coach. He added the title of passing game coordinator last season and will now get his first opportunity to be an OC in the NFL.

Caley, 42, was the leading OC target for the Jets from the start, but he made it known that he wasn’t interested in the position. Instead, he’ll land with the Texans, who let go of Bobby Slowik this offseason.

Caley is a two-time Super Bowl champion and though he’s never called offensive plays, he’s gained valuable experience working under Bill Belichick and Sean McVay.

Report: Rams’ Nick Caley not interested in Jets OC position despite being ‘their top option’

Rams TEs coach Nick Caley was the Jets’ top target for their OC position, but he’s turned them down

There’s a chance Nick Caley will leave the Los Angeles Rams for an offensive coordinator opportunity this offseason, but it won’t be with the New York Jets.

According to Connor Hughes of SNY, Caley has told the Jets that he’s not interested in being their offensive coordinator. Hughes reports that Caley was the team’s “top option” but he has “let it be known he did not have interest in the job.”

With LaFleur out of the running, the Jets are expected to hire Tanner Engstrand as their offensive coordinator. For Caley, he’s also being pursued by the Buccaneers and Texans, so he could potentially leave the Rams for one of those OC openings.

Caley just finished his second season with the Rams as their tight ends coach, also serving as their pass game coordinator under Sean McVay. He joined the Rams in 2023 after eight years with the Patriots, seven of which were as their tight ends coach.

Rams assistant Nick Caley to interview for Texans’ OC position

Nick Caley is quickly becoming one of the top offensive coordinator candidates on the market this offseason

It appears Sean McVay could be on the verge of losing one of his top offensive assistants. Nick Caley, the Los Angeles Rams’ tight ends coach and pass game coordinator, will interview with the Houston Texans on Thursday for their offensive coordinator position, according to Albert Breer of the MMQB.

This will be Caley’s second offensive coordinator interview, and though he hasn’t met with the New York Jets yet, he’s viewed as one of the favorites to be Aaron Glenn’s OC.

Caley also interviewed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are looking for a replacement for Liam Coen on Todd Bowles’ staff.

In addition to Caley, Dave Ragone, Nate Scheelhaase and Aubrey Pleasant are all drawing interest from other teams for offensive or defensive coordinator positions.

Texans to interview potential top candidate for offensive coordinator opening

Los Angeles Rams star Nick Caley could be coming to Houston as the next offensive coordinator.

The Houston Texans might have a lead on who should take over the offensive playbook.

According to MMQB’s Albert Breer, Rams tight ends coach and pass-game coordinator Nick Caley will interview for the Texans’ offensive coordinator job on Thursday.

Caley has been a fan-favorite among Texans fans and could be the top option on the market among rising offensive minds.

He recently interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator opening on Monday following the departure of Liam Coen to Jacksonville.

Caley joined the Rams ahead of the 2023 season after spending six seasons as the tight ends/fullbacks coach for the New England Patriots. He’s considered one of the top influences in developing All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski entering the back half of his career.

Caley went to John Carroll University, the same alma mater as Texans’ general manager Nick Caserio. He was in New England during Caserio’s time before he departed for Houston in 2021.

When DeMeco Ryans was hired in 2023, Caley initially interviewed for the opening offensive coordinator position before the job landed with Bobby Slowik.

With the interview, Caley will become the fourth person to meet with Houston, joining Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis, Syracuse offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon and Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson.

Buccaneers eyeing two more Rams coaches for offensive coordinator position

The Buccaneers have interviewed two Rams assistants for their offensive coordinator position

As teams continue to assemble their coaching staff for the 2025 season, the interview requests keep rolling in for Rams assistants.

Two more coaches are in the running to become the Buccaneers’ next offensive coordinator in addition to Nate Scheelhaase, each interviewing for the job on Tuesday. Tampa Bay announced it has completed interviews with Rams tight ends coach/pass game coordinator Nick Caley and quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone for its offensive coordinator position.

Caley is reportedly viewed as the favorite to become the Jets’ offensive coordinator under Aaron Glenn but he’s drawing interest from the Buccaneers, too. This is Ragone’s first interview for an offensive coordinator position this offseason after previously being the Falcons’ OC from 2021-2023.

Sean McVay has said the Rams’ coaching staff will remain the same in 2025 unless coaches get opportunities elsewhere, so he’d like to keep some continuity following a promising 2024 campaign.

As much as he loves seeing his assistants get promotions with other teams, there is value in keeping the same staff together from year to year.

Report: Rams’ Nick Caley ‘viewed as the favorite’ to be Jets OC under Aaron Glenn

Rams TEs coach Nick Caley is viewed as the favorite to be the Jets’ offensive coordinator under Aaron Glenn

Sean McVay is no stranger to losing coaches in the offseason and though the departures aren’t expected to be as significant this year, there’s still a chance at least one assistant will leave the Rams.

Tight end coach and pass game coordinator Nick Caley is a coach who could potentially leave Los Angeles this winter. According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Caley is “viewed as the favorite” to be Aaron Glenn’s offensive coordinator with the New York Jets.

Klint Kubiak and Scott Turner are two other candidates for the job, but Caley might just be the top choice for Glenn in New York.

Sean McVay commented on Caley’s status Thursday, telling reporters that he hasn’t received a formal interview request from the Jets yet.

This isn’t the first time Caley has drawn interest as an offensive coordinator candidate. He interviewed for that position with the New England Patriots last year when Jerod Mayo was the head coach but he remained in Los Angeles for another year.

Caley previously spent six years with the Patriots as their tight ends coach before joining the Rams in 2023.

Is this the reason why Patriots passed on hiring Nick Caley as OC?

Why did the Patriots pass on hiring Nick Caley as offensive coordinator?

Before hiring Alex Van Pelt, multiple reports had Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach Nick Caley as the frontrunner to be the New England Patriots’ next offensive coordinator.

What changed for Caley in the job hunt, and why did the Patriots ultimately decide to go with Van Pelt?

The Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard touched on a prevalent rumor that indicated Caley might have asked for too much money for the position in New England.

Per NESN.com’s Sean T. McGuire, Bedard wrote:

… Everyone else had options, including Nick Caley, who appeared to be the leading candidate for a while. Did he ask for too much money, even more than Bill O’Brien earned, to leave Sean McVay’s staff and LA, where his family was enjoying life? That was the prevalent rumor at the Senior Bowl.

Caley has history with the Patriots dating back to 2015, when he began his career as an offensive assistant. He last served as the tight ends coach for the organization in 2022.

This is a classic case of what could have been for New England. There’s also the possibility the team might actually be better off for choosing the veteran option in Van Pelt in an effort to get the offense back on track.
