Texans could be looking to hire Patriots’ rising offensive coach

The Texans could be looking to bring on a young, up-and-coming offensive coach from the Patriots.

New England Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley interviewed for the offensive coordinator position with the Houston Texans, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Caley has received ample interest this offseason, and this is his third interview for an offensive coordinator spot so far. He also interviewed with the Patriots and the New York Jets.

There are New England connections in Houston as general manager Nick Caserio was the Patriots director of player personnel from 2008-2020. He began his career in New England as a personnel assistant in 2001. He then served as New England’s area scout in 2003, before becoming the director of pro personnel from 2004-2006. After a stint as the wide receivers coach, he served the role of director of player personnel from 2008-2020.

Caley could have the opportunity to join DeMeco Ryans’ staff as the Texans look for a fresh start all around. It would be an interesting pairing with both coaches getting their first shot at a bigger role.

Report: Texans interview Patriots TE coach Nick Caley for offensive coordinator

The Houston Texans interviewed New England Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley for their offensive coordinator position.

One would not expect the Houston Texans to look for another New England Patriots assistant to bring to Space City, but that could be the case with new coach DeMeco Ryans.

According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, the Texans interviewed Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley for their offensive coordinator position.

Caley, 40, does have the one calling card that is good with general manager Nick Caserio in that both were graduates of John Carroll University just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Caley has been on the Patriots’ staff since 2015 in a variety of roles, most of which have included coaching the tight ends.

The Texans finished 30th in points and 31st in total offense last season under Pep Hamilton.

Report: Patriots could have several offensive coordinator candidates on 2023 staff

Several of the Patriots’ offensive coordinator candidates could end up on the 2023 coaching staff.

The New England Patriots have been busy interviewing candidates for their offensive coordinator position, and it appears as though they want to have more than one offensive candidate on staff.

NBC Sports Boston’s Albert Breer floated this idea during his appearance on Sports Sunday. He indicated that Bill O’Brien is the “likely scenario” for the job based on his past history in New England.

The search for offensive coordinator has been a busy one, as New England has interviewed several candidates. All of the candidates have familiarity with Bill Belichick, having worked under him as players or coaches.

The thought is one of the candidates could join the fray alongside O’Brien as an offensive assistant. Of course, that’s assuming the Patriots even get O’Brien, who still isn’t necessarily a done deal.

“Bill O’Brien has talked to other teams. I know that,” said Breer. “He hasn’t formally interviewed with any of them, but if you look at the sort of structure of the interviews and the way that this has all happened, it feels at least like Bill O’Brien is going to be the offensive coordinator, and the other four guys could wind up on staff in some capacity: Adrian Klemm potentially as a run game coordinator/offensive line coach. Now, he’s not gonna come cheap. He’s making almost $1 million at Oregon right now. Shawn Jefferson potentially coming in as a receivers coach and on down the line.”

The other two offensive coordinator candidates for New England right now is Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley and Minnesota Vikings wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell.

New England has been trying to improve their offensive game planning, as the 2023 season could be a crucial one for several players. It will be fascinating to see how this pans out, as the Patriots look to get back into playoff contention.

Patriots 2023 offensive coordinator candidate tracker

These are all of the candidates that have been interviewed or will be interviewed for the Patriots’ vacant offensive coordinator position.

The New England Patriots have officially started the process of hiring a new offensive coordinator.

It’s a process that appears to be moving along quickly with the team being more open with fans about their intent. Everything seemingly goes back to that letter to season ticket holders from ownership promising “critical evaluations” and change.

One of the obvious critiques has been the state of the offense with Matt Patricia calling the plays. The Patriots clearly need an experienced offensive play-caller to give their team a better chance of competing in 2023.

This decision could make or break the team considering they’re coming off a year where they had a top-10 defense. Even a mediocre offensive effort would have been good enough to get the Patriots into the playoffs. But they’re sitting at home watching the postseason unfold from their couches for the second time in three seasons.

The good news is change is indeed coming, and it all starts at the top on offense. Here are the offensive coordinator candidates that have been interviewed or will be interviewed by New England.

Patriots interviewing highly-touted assistant for offensive coordinator

The Patriots are interviewing their first in-house option for offensive coordinator on Wednesday.

The New England Patriots announced the offensive coordinator search would begin this week, and they’re starting in-house with tight ends coach Nick Caley.

Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the interview is expected to take place on Wednesday, which is a day after Caley interviewed for the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator vacancy.

Belichick’s tendency to hire in-house should give Caley an inside track on landing the job. Of course, Bill O’Brien is seemingly still the team’s No. 1 option, if an agreement can come together.

He’s a former head coach that already has a bevy of experience as an offensive play-caller. It’s hard to envision the Patriots passing on experience, especially after the way things unfolded under Matt Patricia as the offensive play-caller this season.

Keep in mind, the Patriots had a chance to put Caley in that position in 2022, but instead, they ended up pivoting to Patricia and Joe Judge in the preseason. Perhaps Caley simply wasn’t ready for that job responsibility, or maybe the team didn’t strongly envision him in that role.

However, getting an interview is the first step towards getting the job, and Caley has at least made it that far in the process this year.

Jets to interview Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley for offensive coordinator position

Jets to interview Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley for OC

The New York Jets are dipping into a rival coaching staff in their search for a new offensive coordinator.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Jets will interview Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley this week.

The soon-to-be 40-year-old has spent the past eight seasons on Bill Belichick’s staff, first as an offensive assistant for two years and then as the tight ends coach for the past six seasons. He also coached fullbacks along with tight ends in 2020 and 2021.

Rapoport recently considered Caley a strong candidate for the position.

As of now, Caley joins Eagles passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo as known candidates who either have interviewed or will interview for the offensive coordinator position.

NFL insider thinks Texans could be team to watch to hire Nick Caley

Nick Caley could be the coach to watch for the Texans’ offensive coordinator job, according to one NFL insider.

New England Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley could become a prime candidate for an offensive coordinator position, and that opportunity could come outside of New England.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano named Caley as a candidate to watch for the Houston Texans offensive coordinator job.

Caley first came to the Patriots in 2015 as an offensive assistant. He held the position until the 2016 season, before moving to tight ends coach. He has worked with the tight ends since 2017, and he has also done work with the fullbacks.

He was initially going to join Josh McDaniels’ staff in Las Vegas. However, the Patriots blocked him from making that move. Now, he is a prime candidate for a much bigger role, as noted by Graziano.

“Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon impressed the Texans in interviews last year and should be a strong candidate for the job again this year. If he does get that job, I’ve been told one of the names to watch for his offensive coordinator is Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley, who has a connection with Texans GM Nick Caserio from Caserio’s time in New England.”

Caley received praise from the tight ends as recently as last year. Jonnu Smith sang Caley’s praises during training camp this past July, due to his work ethic and preparedness.

This could be one of the bigger storylines to watch in what will surely be a busy offseason for New England. Change is coming for the Patriots, but what that looks like remains to be seen.

Patriots assistant coach receiving ‘high interest’ from division rival

A division rival is looking to snag one of the Patriots’ assistant coaches.

New England Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley could be in line for a promotion, and it could happen outside of New England.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Caley is being considered as a “high interest” candidate for the New York Jets’ vacant offensive coordinator position. So not only could the burgeoning assistant be leaving the Patriots, but if hired for the position, he could be leaving for a division rival.

Caley’s name continues to come up as a possible in-house option for New England in their upcoming search for a new offensive coordinator, which is a position they haven’t officially filled since the exit of Josh McDaniels last offseason.

One would have thought if the team were that gung-ho on Caley, they would have offered him a chance to take over the play-calling this season. But they opted to go with former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia instead.

If opportunity comes knocking elsewhere, Caley might have no other choice but to answer.

Patriots will start interviewing ‘offensive coordinator candidates’ next week

The Patriots will start the interview process for the next “offensive coordinator” next week.

The New England Patriots have announced they will begin the process of interviewing “offensive coordinator candidates” next week.

Yes, you read that right—offensive coordinator candidates.

The Patriots haven’t had a real offensive coordinator since losing Josh McDaniels to the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2022 offseason. Matt Patricia and Joe Judge split the offensive play-calling duties during the preseason before Patricia ultimately won the job.

The offense sputtered, Mac Jones regressed at quarterback and the Patriots finished with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs. Given the amount of times the word “change” has been thrown around regarding the Patriots, it’s no surprise they’re trying to get back to a more conventional way of doing things.

Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is a name that should immediately shoot to the top of the list of possible candidates. Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury would also be an intriguing option. Or, the Patriots also have the option of keeping things in-house and promoting a younger prospect like tight ends coach Nick Caley.

Regardless of the options, the most important thing is the team putting the mess that was the 2022 season in the rearview and moving on to greener pastures in 2023.

5 coaches that could assume offensive coordinator role for Patriots in 2023

Here are five coaches that could take up the offensive coordinator mantle for the Patriots in 2023.

Following their end-of-the-season meeting, it would appear as if New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and coach Bill Belichick are on the same page about the offense needing changes in 2023.

Don’t expect any public announcements, however, as that really isn’t Belichick or Kraft’s style to do that sort of thing.

As is often the case in the day after the regular season finale, many coaches have been let go by programs, and teams have begun their search for replacements. It is likely that Matt Patricia and Joe Judge remain with the Patriots, but they could be reassigned.

As expected with any coordinator, Belichick will likely need to give control of the offense over to the new coach. During player evaluations, it should be a more collaborative approach between Matt Groh, Belichick and the coordinator, if the candidate is not a “Belichick guy.”

Likely, Patricia could remain with the offensive line, and Judge could replace Cam Achord as special teams coordinator.

With the Patriots desperately in need of finding a true offensive coordinator and staff to successfully prepare Mac Jones and company for 2023, these candidates could be calling the shots next season.
