Pro Football Focus ranks Texas A&M junior Nic Scourton among highest-graded transfer edge rushers

On Sunday, Pro Football Focus released its top 10 list of highest-graded transfer edge rushers at the FBS level and Scourton made the ranks.

On Sunday morning, Pro Football Focus released its top 10 list of highest-graded transfer edge rushers at the FBS level and one of Mike Elko‘s biggest portal additions was ranked near the top.

Nic Scourton transferred to Texas A&M from Purdue in early January and he was slotted pretty high on the list. The junior defensive end and outside linebacker was ranked No. 2 with an 82.8 grade.

The only player that Scourton trailed on the list is Miami junior DE Elijah Alston with a 91.4 grade. Alston transferred to South Beach from Marshall but nearly chose Aggieland instead.

Texas A&M offered Alston on Dec. 22 and he chose College Station over Georgia on Jan. 8. However, only 22 hours later, Alston re-opened his recruitment and ultimately committed to the Hurricanes on Jan. 12.

Also on the list from third to tenth: B.J. Green II from Colorado (80.0), Trey Moore from UTSA (78.3), Tyler Baron from Louisville (78.0), Caiden Woullard from Oklahoma (77.9), Tre Smith from Arizona (77.7), Mikail Kamara from Indiana (76.8), Pricely Umanmielen from Ole Miss (76.4) and Devean Deal from TCU (74.9).

Texas A&M is ranked as a Top 18 team in ESPN’s returning production rankings for the 2024 CFB season

Ahead of HC Mike Elko’s first season at the helm, Texas A&M is ranked in the Top 18 in Bill Connelly’s (ESPN) returning production rankings.

Texas A&M Football is entering a new era under head coach Mike Elko, as his inaugural 2024 season is now just seven months away, and Aggie fans couldn’t be more excited to see what he can bring to the job.

While A&M’s 2024 schedule avoids the likes of Alabama and Ole Miss for the first time since entering the SEC more than a decade ago, it’s the wealth of returning production, including gaining 22 players through the transfer portal over the last two months.

On Monday, ESPN’s Bill Connelly released his annual SP+ ratings rankings (subscription required) for the 2024 college football season, as the creator of one of the more accurate returning production models has the Aggies ranked 18th out of 134 FBS teams. According to Connelly, A&M leads the SEC with a returning production rate of 72% and an offensive (77%) and defensive (67%) return rating ranked 22nd and 35th in the country.

As noted in the article, the Aggies’ incoming transfers count in the returning production rating, led by former Purdue Edge Nic Scourton, who led the Big 10 in sacks (10) during the 2023 season.

To clarify things, here is how each position group will potentially look ahead of the spring football season starting next month.

According to its website, the breakdown of students is as follows: 48 football, 16 basketball (13 men), nine baseball, three women’s soccer, two softball, two volleyball, four swimming & diving (two women), eight track & field (five men), three women’s golf and one women’s tennis. Twenty-three of those athletes participate through the TexAgs “Stacked NIL program.”

Scourton is a member of Texas A&M’s revamped defensive line that was rebuilt through the portal. The Aggies’ portal class ranks No. 1 in the nation according to 247Sports.

With Shemar Turner’s return, here’s how Texas A&M’s defensive line should look in 2024

With the news that DT Shemar Turner will return to Texas A&M for his senior season, the Aggies’ defensive line is in very good hands.

On Tuesday night, Texas A&M’s 2024 football team received the news that star defensive tackle Shemar Turner will return for a final season in College Station, delaying his entry into the NFL Draft. With Turner’s existing return, the Aggies defensive line is borderline elite and deeper than ever.

While A&M, in head coach Jimbo Fisher’s final season, struggled on both sides of the ball, the defensive line finished the season 7th in sacks (42) and 5th in tackles for loss (99), primarily anchored by the consistent player of Shemar Turner was second on the team with six sacks behind linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (8), who will enter the 2024 NFL Draft.

Needing several upgrades after the departures of DT Walter Nolen (transferred to Ole Miss) and EDGE Fadil Diggs (transferred to Syracuse), new head coach Mike Elko quickly utilized the transfer portal, adding veteran defensive line talent including EDGE Cashius Howell (Bowling Green) DT Rodas Johnson (Wisconsin), and most notably, former Purdue EDGE Nic Scourton, a Bryan, Texas native, who lead the Big Ten in sacks (10) during the 2023 season.

Texas A&M has skyrocketed in the newest 2024 transfer portal team rankings

After landing 13 players through the transfer portal, (more to come) Texas A&M has risen in the newest transfer portal class rankings.

It’s no secret Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has already made a significant impact on the program after less than two months on the job.

He has already hired a stellar coaching staff with years of personal success. Where Elko starkly differs from former head coach Jimbo Fisher has been his utilization of the transfer portal, which has essentially become college football’s version of NFL free agency.

As of Jan. 5, Elko and the Aggies have landed 13 confirmed transfers, and  several more are pending. Since Thursday, edge Nic Scourton (Purdue), cornerback Donovan Saunders (Cal Poly) and wide receiver Jabre Barber (Troy) have committed to A&M. Each adds starting-level production to critical areas of need.

According to 247Sports‘ newest 2024 transfer portal class rankings, Texas A&M is ranked third. It has an average rating of 89.45 with five four-star and six three-star portal additions. The group is led by Scourton, who is the No. 1 edge and the ninth-ranked player in the transfer portal rankings.

Before you wake up, expect a group of new commitments as Elko has been working late in the night to avoid a rebuilding year in 2024 and look to compete as soon as the Aggies face Notre Dame on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Texas A&M has offically landed Purdue star defender Nic Scourton through the transfer portal

Texas A&M has landed a commitment from local product and former Purdue outside linebacker/defensive end Nic Scourton from the transfer portal, as the Bryan, Texas native visited College Station this week and has chosen to finish his collegiate career with the Maroon & White per multiple sources, including On3.

As one of the top pass rushers in the Big 10 last season, Scourton led the conference with 10 sacks, finishing with 50 tackles (33 solo tackles), 15 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and three pass deflections on the year. During his last two seasons with the Boilermakers, Scourton has added quality mass, currently standing at a whopping 6’4″, 280 pounds.

After several critical departures on the Aggies’ defensive line, Scourton’s versatility as a stand-up linebacker and defensive end bodes well for Elko and new defensive coordinator Jay Bateman’s system, knowing that as soon as spring football begins, we will start to see the impact the impact Scourton will bring in a multitude of areas.

Former Purdue DE/OLB Nic Scourton has received a prediction from 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong to land with Texas A&M.

Amid his visit to College Station, former star Purdue defensive end/outside linebacker Nic Scourton, a native of Bryan, Texas, has received the all-important prediction from 247Sports Recruiting Director Steve Wiltfong to land with Texas A&M after his campus visit on Wednesday.

Needing another play-maker on defense after several key players have entered the transfer portal, including defensive linemen Walter Nolen (transferred to Ole Miss) and Fadil Diggs (transferred to Syracuse), Scourton’s versatility as an elite pass rusher while adding needed plug-and-play ability as a run stopper, the fact that Wilfong released his prediction on the day of Scourton’s visit is as a good a sign as ever.

In just his second collegiate season with the Boilermakers, Scourton took full advantage after earning a starting role, recording 50 tackles (33 solo tackles), 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and three pass deflections on the year while leading the Big 10 in sacks.

Oklahoma Sooners land visit from highly touted edge transfer target

The Oklahoma Sooners are in the running for arguably the best EDGE defender in the transfer portal.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been hard at work building their 2024 roster. After signing their 2024 recruiting class and the Alamo Bowl, the Sooners refocused their attention on the [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag].

The Sooners landed one on Tuesday from the portal and could land another later this week if all goes according to plan. They are scheduled to get a visit from arguably the best edge defender in the transfer portal.

Purdue Boilermakers [autotag]Nic Scourton[/autotag] (formerly Caraway) announced he plans to visit the Sooners on Saturday. Oklahoma is one of four schools getting visits from the talented pass rusher. The Sooners will host Scourton on Jan. 6 after he takes trips to Texas A&M, Florida State and Missouri.

Scourton had a monster season, leading the Big Ten in sacks with 10. He had 50 tackles and 15 tackles for loss. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman fits the mold of [autotag]Rondell Bothroyd[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Redmond[/autotag]. He can play both inside and outside if needed. He would provide a dominant pass rusher, something the Sooners haven’t had in recent years.

The issue is the first visit on his list. Oklahoma fans know all too well how hard it is to overcome the Texas A&M Aggies in recruiting. This time will be no different. Scourton’s hometown is 11 minutes away from College Station, Texas. Missouri has proven a thorn in Oklahoma’s side, and you can’t discount what Mike Norvell is building at Florida State.

The Sooners have one advantage. Scourton’s former teammate, [autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag], joined the Sooners through the transfer portal this offseason.

He has been actively recruiting Scourton to the Sooners.

The Sooners’ coaching staff is hard to beat. They’ve done a great job of reeling in guys when many don’t think they have much of a chance. If they can pull him away from College Station, it would be a massive recruiting win heading into the SEC.

Throughout all the speculation regarding star Purdue pass rusher Nic Scourton’s connection to Texas A&M, the Bryan, Texas native will officially make his way to College Station on Wednesday, Jan. 3, which he recently confirmed on X.

After reportedly canceling his visit to Louisville, Scourton will take consecutive visits to Texas A&M (Jan. 3), Florida State (Jan. 4), Missouri (Jan. 5), and Oklahoma on Jan. 6.

In need of a defensive boost, after several departures through the portal have hindered the Aggies’ depth, Scourton is a plug-and-play option with plenty of experience to fit in any scheme, as new head coach Mike Elko brings an elite defensive acumen to the fold.

Earning a starting spot in the trenches during his 2023 sophomore season, Scourton lit up that stat sheet with 50 tackles (33 solo tackles), 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and three pass deflections on the year, leading the Big 10 in sacks in one of the toughest conferences in the country.

Former Purdue Edge Nic Scourton has cancelled one of his upcoming visits

It has been reported that former Purdue OLB/DE Nic Scourton has canceled his trip to Louisville, placing the Aggies in good position.

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has already landed eight players through the transfer portal, including former Georgia kicker Jared Zirkel, on Sunday afternoon. However, the departure of veteran pass-rusher Fadil Diggs has created yet another hole on defense, leading to Elko fielding an offer to former Purdue Edge Nic Scourton.

Scourton, who led the Big 10 in sacks during the 2023 season, hails from Bryan, Texas, just ten minutes away from College Station. Last week, The Athletics’ Bruce Feldman confirmed that Scourton had set up visits to  Florida State and Louisville. However, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, Scourton has canceled his visit to Louisville and is still considering a visit to Texas A&M.

It’s no secret that Scourton would immediately impact A&M’s defense in 2024, bringing a wealth of experience at both outside linebacker and defensive end. Still, Elko has already lost out on several transfers and needs to make another splash to ease his transition.
