Nic Claxton peacefully protesting: ‘I’m extremely moved by this movement’

Brooklyn Nets rookie Nic Claxton doesn’t want NBA fans to forget about the movement sweeping the nation when games resume in July.

Like his Brooklyn Nets teammates Kyrie Irving and Caris LeVert, rookie big man Nic Claxton has taken part in the peaceful protests sweeping the nation in response to George Floyd’s death.

On Thursday, Claxton shared an image on Instagram from a protest he’s attended, with a message for all basketball fans as the return of play draws near:

My Brothers & Sisters. As I sit back & soak everything in that has been transpiring since the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbrey, Breonna Taylor, amongst many others. I’m extremely moved by this movement. Change needs to come & fast. This has been an ongoing issue. Let’s come together & be the Change. If the NBA season restarts let’s not let this take the focus off of the police brutality & systematic racism that’s deeply embedded in America.

Peace & Love to All

Nets’ Nic Claxton shared his favorite moment from his rookie season

Brooklyn Nets center Nicolas Claxton took a moment on Friday to reflect back on his first year in the NBA with the regular season on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Claxton hosted a Q&A on the Nets’ Twitter account and fielded numerous questions throughout the session, including his college career at Georgia and his favorite memory from this season.

“The best moment in my rookie career so far would have to be when Caris [LeVert] had 51 at Boston,” Claxton said. “That was a huge performance and we really needed that and he brought us back really single-handedly. That was big and I was excited to be a part of that.”

LeVert scored a career-high 51 points on March 3 to lead the Nets to a nine-point win over the Celtics. The win snapped a four-game losing streak and it helped key the Nets winning four out of their last five games before the season was shut down due to the coronavirus.

Claxton is averaging 4.4 points in 15 games this season with the Nets.

WATCH: Kevin Durant blows past Nic Claxton in workout

Kevin Durant isn’t ready for game action yet, but it sure looks like the Brooklyn Nets forward hasn’t lost a step since he last played.

Earlier in the 2019-20 season, Spencer Dinwiddie was among those who were very much impressed by Brooklyn’s rookie forward, Nic Claxton. The point guard even claimed the Nets’ first pick in the 2019 NBA Draft (No. 31 overall, first of second round) is the “second-most talented player on this team”

“Nic got game, man,” Dinwiddie added back in early November. “He got a chance. I put Jarrett fourth. It’s crazy, it’s crazy. And that’s actually me being real, even though Jarrett’s probably my closest friend on the team . . . But he’s going to be an All-Star center though, so take that however you want.”

But there’s one player who Dinwiddie felt was more talented than the rookie: Kevin Durant. And Brooklyn’s superstar forward provided a small example of just how much better he is than Claxton in a workout with teammates, during which he blew by the Nets rookie:

Durant isn’t going to play in 2019-20, but it sure looks like he’s close to game-ready in this video.

Garrett Temple to remain sidelined vs. Lakers, Nic Claxton recalled

Brooklyn Nets rookie Nic Claxton is going to get a taste of what it’s like to face the Lakers at Staples Center on Tuesday.

The Brooklyn Nets recalled rookie forward Nic Claxton ahead of their game on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Claxton has not played in a game for the Nets since February 28. Along with Dzanan Musa, the rookie has been on assignment with Brooklyn’s G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets. Musa will continue his assignment with Long Island and be unavailable for Tuesday’s game.

In his last game with Long Island, Claxton only scored eight points in 27 minutes of action, but he was efficient, going 4-for-7 from the floor. Claxton also finished with eight rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot.

Brooklyn’s other inactive players include the Nets’ two injured superstars, Kyrie Irving (right shoulder surgery) and Kevin Durant (right Achilles rehab).

The Nets will also be without Garrett Temple again on Tuesday. He is dealing with a left ankle sprain. Tuesday’s game will be the fourth in a row the veteran wing is sidelined due to the sprain.

The Nets and Lakers tipoff at 10:30 p.m. EST at Staples Center.

Garrett Temple doubtful vs. Spurs

The Brooklyn Nets have three players on assignment with the Long Island Nets, two others out and one more who could be sidelined Friday.

The Brooklyn Nets will likely be without Garrett Temple again on Friday, given his recent status update.

The wing missed the Nets’ loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday due to a left ankle sprain. He has been ruled doubtful for Friday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs for the same reason.

Kevin Durant (right Achilles rehab) and Kyrie Irving (right shoulder surgery) are the only other players included on the Nets’ status report due to injury. Both at out.

Nic Claxton, Dzanan Musa and two-way player Jeremiah Martin are all unavailable for the Nets. They are all on assignment with Brooklyn’s G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets. They host the Lakeland Magic, the Orlando Magic’s G League affiliate, on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be available to watch on NBAGLeague.com.

In Long Island’s last game, which was a 124-108 win over the Delaware Blue Coats, the Philadelphia 76ers’ G League affiliate, Claxton scored 34 points on 10-for-16 shooting (3-for-6 from deep). Dzanan Musa scored 20 on 5-for-14 shooting (2-for-5 from three) in the win.

Nets add two more names to list of unavailable players vs. Grizzlies

The Brooklyn Nets will be without Garrett Temple in their matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday due to injury.

Two players have been added to the Brooklyn Nets’ list of unavailable players ahead of Wednesday’s against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Garrett Temple, who was questionable to play against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday until the last minute due to a right shoulder sprain, will not play against his old team. The Nets wing has a left ankle sprain.

This will be the sixth game Temple has missed this season.

Brooklyn will also be without rookie forward Nic Claxton. The Nets assigned him to their G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, prior to Wednesday’s game at Barclays Center. He will join Dzanan Musa and two-way player Jeremiah Martin, who are both with Long Island, as well.

Kevin Durant (right Achilles rehab) and Kyrie Irving (right shoulder impingement) round out the list of Nets players who won’t be available in Brooklyn’s return to Barclays Center.

Tipoff on Wednesday is at 7:30 p.m.

Nic Claxton recalled by Nets from G League

After spending some time with the Long Island Nets, Nic Claxton is back with the Brooklyn Nets for Friday’s game.

Following the NBA All-Star break, Nic Claxton was among the players the Brooklyn Nets assigned to their G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets. He played in three games for Long Island, but will not be with the team on Friday.

Prior to their game against the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn announced Claxton had been recalled.

The Nets rookie led Long Island in scoring in two of the three games he played in throughout his recent stretch in the G League. He finished in double figures each game, averaging 16.7 points per game. Claxton’s highest total (21 points) came against the Lakeland Magic, the Orlando Magic’s G League affiliate. The forward also grabbed 12 rebounds against Lakeland.

Claxton could still rejoin Long Island for their next game, should he not play much on Friday or against the Miami Heat on Saturday. Long Island is off until Sunday, when the Nets play host to Raptors 905, the Toronto Raptors’ G League affiliate.

Nic Claxton has no doubt about Anthony Edwards going first in 2020 NBA Draft

They may have attended Georgia at different times, but Nic Claxton likes what he’s seen from Anthony Edwards.

Although Nic Claxton didn’t get the chance to play with Anthony Edwards at Georgia — he elected to declare for the NBA Draft after his sophomore season with the Bulldogs, before Edwards’ first year — the 31st overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft (first of the second round) already has an idea of what the 6-foot-5 guard is going to bring to the NBA when he gets his chance.

In fact, Claxton is currently in line with most mock drafts, which have Edwards being the No. 1 overall pick in 2020. After the Nets rookie’s game on Monday with the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G League affiliate — in which he had seven rebounds and scored 19 points on 8 of 9 shooting — Claxton explained to Chris Milholen of Nets Daily just how confident he is that Edwards will go No. 1:

He is amazing. First pick for sure, no question. He is doing his thing out there. He is going to be something special in this league for a very long time.

Long Island is back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Nets to be extremely shorthanded vs. 76ers on Thursday

Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving is just one of the many players who won’t suit up for Thursday’s contest against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Per the Brooklyn Nets PR, several Nets players will be unable to take the floor against the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday.

Point guard Kyrie Irving, who has been diagnosed with a significant shoulder injury, headlines the list. Joining him will be two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant, who has already said he won’t be playing during the 2019-20 season.

In addition, big man Nic Claxton, forward Dzanan Musa and point guard Jeremiah Martin will also be absent for Nets’ first game since the All-Star Break, with all having been assigned to the NBA G League with the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G League affiliate.

For Irving, it will be the 27th game of the season that he’s missed with a right shoulder impingement. On Tuesday, it was reported that Irving would see a specialist this week after re-aggravating an injury that’s long been causing him pain.

Durant, as previously mentioned, has yet to suit up for the 2019-20 season. However, recent videos have shown Durant getting shots up and looking much like the long-range assassin he’s been known to be throughout his career. Though he’s ruled himself out for the remainder of the season, the video is still encouraging for his long-term future with the Nets, as it appears that he’ll be in prime form when the 2020-21 season rolls around.

Nic Claxton assigned to Long Island

On Wednesday, the Brooklyn Nets assigned rookie Nic Claxton to their G League affiliate.

Dzanan Musa was assigned to the Brooklyn Nets’ G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, on Tuesday, and he will be joined by another one of his teammates on Wednesday.

Brooklyn has assigned rookie forward Nic Claxton to Long Island.

Claxton has played in three games at the G League level this season — the first of which he only played a handful of minutes due to injury. During those games, the forward is averaging 11.7 points per game on 58.3% shooting (40% from 3-point territory, on limited attempts). Claxton has also averaged 4.7 rebounds while playing 14 minutes per game for Long Island.

Claxton has played in 14 games for Brooklyn throughout the 2019-20 season. Though, the rookie hasn’t logged any minutes for Brooklyn since January 26.

In his limited opportunities at the NBA level, Claxton has averaged 4.4 points on 56.5% shooting, while playing 13.1 minutes per game. He also averages 3.1 rebounds per game.

Long Island plays next on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s G League affiliate. The game will be available to watch on NBAGLeague.com.
