The Saints had more punting yards than offensive yards against the Chargers

The Saints had more punting yards than offensive yards gained in their Week 8 loss to the Chargers. Klint Kubiak has some explaining to do:

The New Orleans Saints find themselves sitting with a 2-6 record after eight weeks, and their offense has been pretty much useless without Pro Bowl  center Erik McCoy for six of those weeks. This became an even more obvious issue in their Week 8 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers when they managed to have more total punt yards than total yards of offense during the course of the game. They ended with 366 total yards during the course of the game, which is not horrendous but not good at all either.

As for punting yards, rookie punter Matthew Hayball got 9 attempts to punt and made the most of them as he racked up 437 yards (48.6 per punt). He also put five of his punts inside the opposing 20-yard line and had only two go for a touchback in what was a pretty masterful game for the rookie punter. The Saints were averaging only 162.3 punt yards per game entering Week 8, the 22nd-most in the NFL, which shows how much of an outlier this truly is.

With all due respect to Hayball, the punter should never be the teammate having the best day, and he certainly shouldn’t be outgaining his own offense. Klint Kubiak has some explaining to do. Losing McCoy for so long has given him plenty of time to adjust but no changes have been forthcoming. He hasn’t recovered from that loss even with so many other starters and key contributors returning from injury. The clock is ticking louder as Kubiak’s offense continues to stall out. Something must change, and soon.

Saints QB Spencer Rattler reacts to being benched: ‘It is what it is’

Spencer Rattler was benched during the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in favor of quarterback Jake Haener. He spoke about the change after the game:

New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler was benched during the third quarter in favor of former Fresno State passer Jake Haener during Sunday’s 26-8 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Saints initially chose to roll with Rattler over Haener when starting quarterback Derek Carr went down withy an injury earlier in the season, but they may be rethinking things with the way the rookie has struggled.

The performance he put on in his latest showing was unconvincing, as he went 12-of-24 passing for 155 yards.

In a way, it’s hard to blame Rattler for some of his issues because of how thin the Saints currently are at wide receiver, the way he was thrown into the fire as a rookie without warning and the countless other problems out of his control that the Saints need to remedy.

“I think we were moving the ball at a good rate in the first half and then a little bit in that second half,” Rattler said after the game. “We would go forward and then backward. Forward and backward. So, we all shot ourselves in the foot a little bit just with the little things and the way we played just didn’t win the game.”

Specifically on being benched, Rattler isn’t focused on the decision and it doesn’t seem to be getting to him personally.

“I control the controllables and I’m just a team guy, so I’m going to want us to win either way. So, it is what it is,” Rattler added.

It will be interesting to watch what the Saints do moving forward at quarterback with a matchup against the Carolina Panthers set for Noon CT/1 p.m. ET on Nov. 3 in Charlotte.

Saints narrowly avoided making ‘Scorigami’ NFL history

The Saints narrowly avoided making ‘Scorigami’ history on Sunday in their loss to the Chargers. Hopefully next week they’ll be the ones scoring all the points;

The New Orleans Saints have narrowly avoided making NFL ‘Scorigami’ history on Sunday in the 26-8 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

It’s an oddity of a final score, but it is indeed not the first time it has ever happened. ‘Scorigami’ is defined as when it is the first time a score of its type has ever been recorded in NFL history. The Saints did clinch one earlier this season.

This is still notable, though, considering that it’s the first time a game ended with this score since 1978. It’s just the third time in NFL history this happened.

So, how exactly did we get here?

The Saints got to the scoreboard first with a safety, leading 2-0 at the beginning of the game. But things quickly spiraled out of control as the game went on a 26-6 run in the following three quarters of the game. A missed PAT by the Chargers also contributed to such a strange final score.

Next week, the Saints will hope to be the ones scoring all of the points. But that has not been the case to this point and it is going to take some major fixing on the offensive side of the ball for them to get there.

Saints lost another receiver to injury late in loss to Chargers

The New Orleans Saints lost wide receiver Bub Means to an ankle injury on Sunday. They can’t afford many more hits to the receiving corps:

The New Orleans Saints lost wide receiver Bub Means to injury on Sunday when he was carted off the field late in the 26-8 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Head coach Dennis Allen noted after the game that Means had suffered an ankle injury, but he declined to share specifics. Means had previously left the game with a hand injury but returned in an attempt to play through it.

While the Saints have had plenty of other issues abound contributing to their lack of success, injuries have been one of the key problems. And wide receiver is a particular area that has caused many woes.

Among those names include Rashid Shaheed (out for the season after knee surgery) and Cedrick Wilson Jr. (who didn’t play this week due to a hip injury). Depending on how things shake out with injuries at the position moving forward will have great bearing on just how soon a newly-signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling could see the field.

Valdes-Scantling was inactive for Week 8, shortly after joining the Saints. If he is to take the field sooner rather than later, expect him to make an impact as a deep threat as he totals 22 career catches of 40 or more yards.

The Saints will aim for a (much) better offensive performance when they face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at 12 Noon CT/1 p.m. ET.

WATCH: Jayden Daniels’ Hail Mary to Noah Brown gives Commanders the win

Wow.

Once the Chicago Bears scored their second touchdown with under 30 seconds remaining in the game to take a 13-12 lead, things looked bleak for the Washington Commanders. When the Bears converted on the two-point conversion, making it 15-12, the best Washington could hope for was a tie.

Jayden Daniels and the Commanders took over deep in their territory with 19 seconds remaining and only one timeout. The goal was to complete a few passes, get out of bounds and bring on kicker Austin Seibert to hopefully force overtime.

Daniels had other plans. After completing a pass to Terry McLaurin with two seconds remaining, the Commanders had one play left. The only option was a Hail Mary. They never work unless it’s Aaron Rodgers. Right?

Under pressure, Daniels rolled to his right, then reversed field, stopped and unleashed the ball from the Washington 35-yard line to the opposite end zone. The pass fell just a bit short of the end zone as multiple players from both teams were huddled around the goal line. Someone tipped the pass, and it went to wide receiver Noah Brown, who was waiting by himself in the end zone.

Ballgame. Commanders win, 18-15.

Check it out.

Daniels, playing with injured ribs, passed for over 326 yards. Washington improved to 6-2 and stayed atop the NFC East.

What. A. Game.

Marshon Lattimore out for the remainder of Chargers game with hamstring injury

The Saints suffered back to back hamstring injuries against the Chargers, this time it was top cornerback Marshon Lattimore:

The New Orleans Saints had two hamstring injuries occur within a short period of time against the Los Angeles Chargers, the first being an injury to Kendre Miller and then another to Marshon Lattimore. Lattimore suffered a hamstring injury last week as well against the Denver Broncos, however, he was cleared to go for this game. It is unclear at this time if it is a re-aggravation of that previous injury, or a new injury altogether.

This is one of the many soft tissue injuries the Saints have had in the last few weeks, and it has become a major detriment to the team as week-to-week they have a few new ones pop up. Further clarification for the type of injury will come in the upcoming days, but it is most definitely a concern that needs to be addressed within the organization.

Saints running back ruled out for rest of Chargers game with injury

New Orleans Saints running back Kendre Miller suffered another hamstring injury, and will miss the remainder of Week 8’s Chargers game:

The New Orleans Saints injury bug continues, as they see Kendre Miller go down with another hamstring injury in their Week 8 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. This is not a new occurrence for Miller, as he has previously suffered a litany of injuries in his short NFL career, with two additional hamstring injuries, a patella sprain, and an ankle sprain, which have caused him to miss 15 games to date (nine in 2023 and six so far in 2024).

The Saints ruled Miller out for the remainder of their matchup with the Chargers, which leaves them back at square one with only Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams. Things get intriguing now because they previously waived Jordan Mims, which leaves them with the option to either go sign another running back or figure out where to trade for one if they find it to be a big need. We will see the severity of the injury in the coming days, but as of now it is not a good sign with so many injuries piling up for him.

WATCH: Taysom Hill forces a safety for the Saints on a botched punt

Taysom Hill made an immediate impact in his first game back from injury. He forced a safety for the Saints after the Chargers botched a punt:

The New Orleans Saints’ defense and special teams started off strong against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8, with their first score of the day coming on a forced safety.

Los Angeles botched the snap on their second punt of the day, and Taysom Hill, who recently returned from injury, forced the punter to cough up the ball after an attempted recovery. That caused the ball to skid out of the endzone for a New Orleans safety, giving them an early 2-0 lead.

The Saints have not had a safety since 2020, which came in their matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. They will now look to build off their two point lead throughout the remainder of the matchup, and we will see if they can capitalize off of this rare occurrence.

Lions roar past Titans in Week 8 blowout win

The Detroit Lions blew out the visiting Tennessee Titans in eek 8 thanks to defensive takeaways, special teams and opportunistic offense

The Detroit Lions were favored to beat the Tennessee Titans in Week 8 by the team’s largest margin since 1996. The 11.5-point line proved to be woefully inadequate.

The mighty Lions roared past the hapless Titans, 52-14, in a game that wasn’t competitive after the middle of the second quarter. After a strong start by the Tennessee offense caught the Detroit defense sleepwalking a little in the earlygoing, the Lions completely dominated all phases of the game. A 14-14 tie early in the second quarter morphed into a 35-14 rout at halftime.

Two quick Kalif Raymond touchdowns after the half, one on a punt return and another on a reception from Jared Goff, quickly opened up the margin even more. Garbage time saw the Lions tack on a Jake Bates 51-yard field goal to complete the scoring.

The Lions scored 52 points despite gaining just 225 net yards of offense; Detroit ran just 47 offensive plays. They didn’t need more, thanks to four defensive takeaways and three long special teams returns continually set up the Lions offense with short fields. Tennessee’s defense was competitive early but couldn’t keep up with the Lions’ bevy of offensive weapons and great field position.

With the win, the Lions improve to 6-1. Tennessee drops to 1-6.
