Cleveland at Pittsburgh Game Preview

Why Cleveland Will Win

The Steelers still can’t run the ball, and they still can’t stop the run.

They were able to get away with allowing over 200 yards in the first meeting with the Browns – a 15-10 win – and the 115 rushing yards were big for them, but they probably can’t get away with that this time.

Kareem Hunt is expected to be back and part of the mix of an already amazing ground attack that’s the third-best in the NFL and leads the league in yards per attempt. It should be able to pound away a bit, the run defense isn’t getting gouged and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 17

Why Pittsburgh Will Win

It might be the last home game in Ben Roethlisberger’s great career, and he needs to be great.

The passing attack hasn’t been anything special, and it’s not generating enough big things down the field, it’s doing a wee bit to make up for the lack of a steady ground attack.

The Browns might be playing well defensively, and they’re going going to try grounding it out, but there are still too many turnovers and too much inconsistency.

If Najee Harris and the ground attack could just be okay – the guy never has any space to move – Roethlisberger should be able to rise up on the big stage.

NFL Week 17 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams need this, and Pittsburgh’s going to get it.

Cleveland will do what it does on the ground, but too many drives will stall and with too many field goals instead of touchdowns.

No, Roethlisberger isn’t throwing for 300 yards, and he won’t do anything heroic, but he’ll be fine. That will be good enough, and the Steelers will be good enough defensively at getting off the field to get out with the key win.

Kansas City at Cincinnati Game Preview

Why Kansas City Will Win

The Kansas City offense is humming.

It doesn’t matter who’s in and who’s filling in as long as 15 is steady.

Patrick Mahomes is keeping the mistakes to a relative minimum, the running game is helping the cause, and the points are coming easier now. It might not be the high-flying fun show of the last few years, and other parts are contributing to the blowouts, but it’s all working in the eight-game winning streak.

Again, it starts with not making mistakes. There’s a problem when the Chiefs turn the ball over, and they’re all but untouchable when they don’t give the ball away. Cincinnati is built to get into firefights, but the defense only has two takeaways in the last three games with the run D having a few issues.

If Kansas City can run and doesn’t give the ball away, forget it. However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 17

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Again, Cincinnati is built to get into firefights.

The Kansas City defense has been a takeaway machine over the second half of the season, but the Bengals having turned it over In either of the last two games. The offense has been ridiculously inconsistent, but the receiving corps might just be the best in the NFL at the moment and Joe Burrow has turned his game up a few notches.

Tee Higgins has been a breakout star, Joe Mixon is running well, and …

NFL Week 17 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

The Kansas City defense is about to answer the challenge again.

The Chiefs have come up with three or more takeaways in four of the last five games and multiple turnovers in each of the last eight. It has also allowed 17 points or fewer in seven of the last eight games.

The Bengal offense might not be the version that struggled to do much of anything against Denver a few weeks ago, but it’s about to have a hard time getting going.

Miami at Tennessee Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

It’s not always pretty, and there’s almost no consistency to the mix, but the team just keeps on winning.

It was helped last week by New Orleans not having a quarterback, but even then the offense was able to find ways to get the job done against a Saint defense that also has a habit of finding a way to succeed.

The Miami defense hasn’t faced a who’s who of offenses over the run, but there hasn’t been a letdown as the season has turned around. The run defense has been a rock, the secondary hasn’t allowed more than 160 yards in any of the last four games and hasn’t given up a 300-yard passing day in any of the last eight games, and the offense is taking advantage of its opportunities.

Tennessee’s offense has stopped working, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 17

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Titans have been able to turn it around a bit over the last three weeks with two wins in the last three. No, the O isn’t anything scintillating, but the defense is making up for it by dominating against the run – it’s second in the NFL in run defense – and by forcing takeaways.

It’s not that hard. WIth the offense struggling too much, the D has to provide the easy opportunities. Tennessee is 8-0 over the last 11 games when it forces a takeaway, and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

Miami doesn’t have the running game to take over the tempo, and Tua Tagovailoa is good for an interception or two when pressed.

NFL Week 17 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to be anything aesthetically pleasing, but it’ll be intense through the fourth quarter.

Tennessee won’t be able to consistently run, but it’ll do a little bit more than the Miami ground game will. It’ll come down to field goals and turnovers, and Tennessee will have a few more of the former and a little less of the latter.

Jacksonville at New England Game Preview

Why Jacksonville Will Win

So what’s going right through all of the turmoil and all the changes? The offense is starting to play a wee bit better. It helped to face the Jets last week, but the passing attack had its best performance in weeks and the ground attack was able to provide enough balance to matter.

New England might be great overall defensively, but it was hit hard by Josh Allen and the Bills last week and had problems with the Colt and Falcon running games in previous weeks.

The Jaguars have zero pressure on them. The Patriots have to avoid screwing up, they have to get the passing game going after a few inconsistent weeks, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 17

Why New England Will Win

Yeah, Jacksonville looked fine, but again, it was against the Jets – and it was a loss.

New England has to come up with a good performance in this before closing out at Miami, and it starts with a running game that should be able to rumble however it wants to. The Jaguar defensive front was ripped up by New York – Zach Wilson had a nice day on the ground – and there won’t be any guesswork about this.

Don’t take any risks, dare the James Robinson-less Jaguar running game try to work, and take whatever points are there to be had. Jacksonville has yet to score more than 23 points and went eight straight games without getting to 17 before last week.

NFL Week 17 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be workmanlike. After last week’s loss to Buffalo, the Patriots are about to come out jacked and challenged on defense. The Jaguars aren’t going to get the takeaways needed to make this interesting with New England running for well over 200 yards.

New York Giants at Chicago Game Preview

Why New York Giants Will Win

It might be Mike Glennon vs his old Chicago Bears team. It’s going to be on.

Jake Fromm will likely get a bulk of the work for an offense that needs to just keep things moving just a bit, and then rely on the defense to keep down a mediocre Chicago attack.

The Giants are able to push the ball down the field just a wee bit, and the on the other side, the defense is decent at keeping the deep plays from working. Chicago might have shocked Seattle last week, but it’s still struggling to get more out of the NFL’s worst passing game.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 17

Why Chicago Will Win

The Giants are an offensive disaster.

They haven’t been able to get more than 13 points in five of their last six games with the offense stalling in the blowout loss to Philadelphia.

No, Chicago isn’t making big things happen, and it’s having a slew of problems trying to work through all the health issues at quarterback, but it’s getting production out of the passing game. Compared to where things were at times early in the season, this is the Greatest Show on Turf.

Again, it’s not always scintillating, but as long as there aren’t a slew of turnovers – the Bears were error-free against the Seahawks – the defense is just good enough to take care of the rest.

NFL Week 17 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Bears avoid the turnovers? For all of their positives at times over the last several weeks, they’ve all gone away with the big mistakes.

New York doesn’t come up with takeaways, coming up with just one in the last four games.

It’s not going to be easy – Chicago struggles to do anything consistently well – but it’ll generate enough from the ground game to control the clock. The Giants won’t have anything offensively to take advantage of the good field position they’ll have time and again.

Buffalo at Atlanta Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

Now that’s the Buffalo we’ve been waiting to see again.

Attitude, toughness, offensive explosion – it all came out in the 33-21 win over New England last week. Josh Allen and the passing game were great, the ground game was okay, and the defense was able to generate the stops needed to keep the Patriots from controlling the game.

Atlanta has been okay over the last few weeks, but the ground game has hit a wall for an offense that’s struggling to keep things moving.

Matt Ryan has hit over 200 yards in three of his last four games, but he’s going to have a hard time getting the downfield plays going against the secondary allowing a league-low five yards per attempt.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 17

Why Atlanta Will Win

Atlanta is playing okay.

It’s not doing anything special other than keeping the mistakes to a minimum. Ryan has been fine, the defense has been terrific at holding up when absolutely needed – at least against Carolina and Detroit – and the there aren’t the turnovers like there were over the middle of the season.

Buffalo can be run on.

Atlanta might be having problems cranking up the ground attack, but it has to give it a try this week. The Bills got run over twice by the Patriots, and they also struggling against Tampa Bay and Carolina, and Jonathan Taylor ran wild in Indianapolis’s win.

NFL Week 17 Schedules, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Buffalo won’t get going until the second half.

Atlanta has been plucky lately, doing a decent enough job defensively to hang around for a while. However, the offensive side just doesn’t have the pop to keep up once the Bills finally take control.

Josh Allen will overcome a bad first quarter to hit two home runs to take over. The defense will take care of the rest.

5. New York Jets at New England

LINE: New England -3
ATS PICK: New England
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

That’s pride kicking in.

New England might not be going to the playoffs, and it’s long been out of the Super Bowl hunt, but this is still a team full of players used to doing those big things.

No, you don’t go 6-9 in New England, and there’s a whole ton of rebuilding to do after it all fell apart, but this is still a better, stronger team that it showed over the last three weeks.

It doesn’t help that they played the Rams, Dolphins and Bills – three to the stronger defenses.

Meanwhile, the Jets haven’t been all that bad. They’ve won two straight and should’ve been on a run of three in the last four – the collapse against Las Vegas ruined that – and they’re coming off a brilliant defensive game against a depleted Cleveland that couldn’t get the O going. However …

After being embarrassed on national TV in a 38-9 loss to the Bills, the Patriots are about to close strong. The running game will work, Cam Newton will be fine, and the Patriots will meltdown offensively in the fourth.

Giving away three won’t be an issue.
