Bengals don’t get much help in playoff race during bye week

The Bengals will need to keep winning to stand a chance.

The Cincinnati Bengals started their bye week getting some help on Thursday night when the Cleveland Browns upset the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Those Steelers were tops in the AFC North and fell to 8-3 with the loss.

The Week 12 weekend was more mixed for the resting Bengals. Tennessee knocked off Houston in an upset, bringing the Texans down to 7-5. But Miami stomped New England to move to 5-6.

Later, Denver moved to 7-5 as 2-9 Las Vegas couldn’t pull off the upset despite leading at halftime.

Not the best help overall from a Bengals perspective. As is the case with any possible results from here on out, all that matters is the Bengals keep winning games.

That starts in Week 13 against those Steelers, then even in primetime against the Dallas Cowboys, the only non-AFC team remaining on their schedule.

Monday night, at least, features a showdown between seven-win AFC teams Baltimore and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Instant analysis of Patriots’ 34-15 blowout loss to Dolphins

Instant analysis of the Patriots’ Week 12 blowout loss

Hard Rock Stadium served as the backdrop for another horror show for the New England Patriots in Sunday’s AFC East divisional clash with the Miami Dolphins.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins offense lit up the Patriots defense for 24 points in the first half of the game. There were no answers for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in a game where the Dolphins took whatever they wanted against New England.

The defensive coaching came under intense scrutiny due to the Patriots’ inability to make in-game adjustments to what the Dolphins were doing.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Patriots were gutted by penalties and the inability to pass protect on the edges. Quarterback Drake Maye was the star of this horror picture with the Patriots’ offensive line giving up four sacks and eight quarterback hits. He finished with 221 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Both starting tackles, Vederian Lowe and Demontrey Jacobs, were completely outmatched by Miami’s edge rushers in the game.

The Patriots showed some life late in the game with a long passing touchdown from Maye to tight end Austin Hooper, along with a fumble returned for a touchdown by cornerback Christian Gonzalez. But it wasn’t even close to being enough to overcome Miami on the road in a 34-15 loss.

If not for the penalties, the Patriots offense likely could have put up more points. It’s hard to score points when penalties continue to lengthen downs and kill drives.

The Patriots had 10 penalties in Sunday’s game.

We’ll see if they can pick up the pieces and bounce back effectively at home next week against the visiting Indianapolis Colts.

Jalen Pitre injury update: Texans star DB ruled out for second half vs. Titans

Jalen Pitre is currently being evaluated for a shoulder injury against the Tennessee Titans.

(This story was updated to add new information.)

The Houston Texans trail 20-17 at halftime in an AFC South bout against the Tennessee Titans, but there’s a much more prominent concern entering the second half.

Star defensive back Jalen Pitre left just before halftime after holding onto his shoulder while walking off the field. According to the Texans’ public relations staff, he’s currently being evaluated for a shoulder injury.

Pitre, who switched from safety to the nickel position this offseason, has been one of Houston’s better open-field tacklers for DeMeco Ryans’ defense in Year 2. The Texans are thin without him since cornerback Jeff Okudah was ruled out before Sunday’s showdown at NRG Stadium.

Here’s everything to know of Pitre’s injury:

Jalen Pitre injury update

Pitre exited Sunday’s game against the Titans and went to the locker room, according to the CBS broadcast. He is currently being evaluated for a shoulder injury.

According to the Texans’ PR staff, Pitre will not return for the second half. Now the question turns to if he’ll miss next week’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars before the bye in Week 14.

Will Jalen Pitre return?

Pitre will not return for the second half on defense.

Jalen Pitre stats

In 11 games, Pitre leads Houston with 64 total tackles and eight pass deflections. He’s also recorded an interception and forced a fumble.

Texans DB Depth Chart

For Sunday’s game, the expectation is for Jimmie Ward to move down to the nickel position while Calen Bullock and Eric Murray man the safety spot. Houston also could play a three-linebacker set with Neville Hewitt as the new MIKE backer and Azeez Al-Shaair in coverage as the team’s starting WILL.

Patriots vs. Dolphins inactives: Christian Barmore IN, Deatrich Wise OUT

Christian Bamore and Christian Gonzalez are officially active against the Dolphins

The New England Patriots will have their two best defensive players for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and defensive tackle Christian Barmore are both officially active for the game. That’s good news for the Patriots ahead of a tough battle against Miami’s high-powered offense.

Gonzalez was a late addition to the injury report on Friday due to a hip injury, while Barmore is still working his way back into the mix after missing most of the season recovering from a blood clot diagnosis.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, they won’t have team captain Deatrich Wise Jr. for the game. The veteran defensive end went through pregame warmups, and he still wasn’t well enough to return from the foot injury he suffered in the Week 10 win over the Chicago Bears.

Here’s the full list of inactives for both teams for the Week 12 game:

The Patriots will need all of the help they can get on the road against a desperate Dolphins team fighting to make a last-ditch playoff run. We’ll see if it’s enough to steal an upset win at Hard Rock Stadium.

NFL Week 12 picks: See who experts are taking in Commanders vs. Cowboys today

Who are the experts riding with in Week 12?

Only one game on the Week 12 NFL slate features a more significant favorite than the Washington Commanders (7-4) over the Dallas Cowboys (4-7).

The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are an 11-point favorite over the Carolina Panthers. Washington is a 10.5-point favorite over Dallas.

The Commanders were already double-digit favorites over the Cowboys before prominent starters, such as guard Zack Martin, cornerback Trevon Diggs, and wide receiver Brandin Cooks, were ruled out on Saturday afternoon.

The good news for Washington is that playing last Thursday gave the roster a mini-break after losing its second consecutive game. The Commanders have yet to arrive at their bye week. The extra rest days were good news for a banged-up roster, specifically rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Daniels injured his ribs in a Week 7 win over Carolina, and while he didn’t miss any games, he missed some practice time and is coming off his worst NFL performance in last week’s loss at Philadelphia.

So, do the experts agree with the oddsmakers?

According to NFL Pickwatch, the experts do agree, with 98% of the picks going in favor of Washington.

This is the Commanders’ fourth NFC East game of the season. They are currently 2-1 in divisional play.

Prediction and betting odds for Commanders vs. Cowboys in Week 12

Analyzing Commanders vs. Cowboys game with odds and lines, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Commanders (7-4) look to return to winning on Sunday as they host the reeling Dallas Cowboys (3-7) at Northwest Stadium.

The Commanders are coming off back-to-back one-score losses to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and need a win to remain a game and a half behind the Eagles in the NFC East.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels looks to rebound after his worst NFL start against one of the NFL’s worst defenses. Meanwhile, Cooper Rush makes his third straight start for Dallas in place of the injured Dak Prescott.

Below are the latest odds and our final score prediction for Sunday.

Commanders vs. Cowboys game odds:

All NFL Odds via BetMGM:

  • Point spread: Commanders -10.5 (-110) / Cowboys +10.5 (-110)

  • Cowboys G Zack Martin: Out (ankle, shoulder)

Commanders vs. Cowboys prediction, pick:

Bryan Manning:

There is no reason to think Dallas should win this game. Everything is in Washington’s favor, including the Cowboys’ recent play and injury list. In 2024, the Commanders are simply the better team, with the better quarterback and coaching staff. On Sunday, Washington takes care of business to improve to 8-4. Commanders 34, Cowboys 13

Ivan Lambert:

The Cowboys have won 12 games in three consecutive seasons, while the Commanders have yet to accomplish a winning season since the 2015 and 2016 seasons led by Kirk Cousins. By the way, for the Cowboys, those three seasons were the same three seasons that their defensive coordinator was current Commanders head coach Dan Quinn.

Here we are in the 2024 season and who would have thought the Cowboys would be 3-7 and the Commanders would be 7-4?

Yet, here we are.

The Commanders have lost two straight and have everything to play for regarding earning a playoff spot. In addition, the Commanders have run the ball well this season, while the Cowboys have not defended the run well. Even more, the Cowboys will be without Dak Prescott and future Hall of Fame lineman Zach Martin.

The Cowboys are already thinking about who the new coach will be next season and how high they will be selecting in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Commanders have Dan Quinn and Jayden Daniels and are out to prove they belong in the playoff race. Commanders 30, Cowboys 13

Serena Burks: I don’t want to say this is a guaranteed win for the Commanders, but if they don’t win, there’s a problem. The Cowboys are not a good football team with Dak Prescott. Without him, it’s worse. Their defense isn’t capable of taking over, especially against the likes of Jayden Daniels and Brian Robinson. The Cowboys might put up a fight, but the Commanders will have no real trouble winning this divisional game. Commanders 34, Cowboys 13
