Twitter reacts to 49ers’ trade for DE Chase Young

Twitter was full of takes as the San Francisco 49ers landed a deal with Washington for DE Chase Young.

The San Francisco 49ers, who already have a fierce pass rush with Nick Bosa and Javon Hargrave, decided they needed even more firepower.

The 49ers traded with the Washington Commanders Tuesday for the services of defensive end Chase Young. The former 2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year joins his former college teammate at Ohio State to wreak havoc in the Bay Area. All it cost the 49ers to add more to their impressive defensive line was a third-round pick.

Twitter was on point with takes as some NFL fans experienced JOMO seeing Young go for that price. Here are some of the best.

Brad Holmes on big-name trade ideas for the Lions: ‘It’s not reality’

Holmes added, “there’s nothing that we leave unturned or ignored or anything,” and discussed why the team added WR Donovan Peoples-Jones

The NFL trade deadline passed on a Halloween afternoon without a lot of activity in Detroit. Lions GM Brad Holmes held a press conference to discuss the state of the team and his thoughts and experience at the deadline.

Holmes made it clear that a lot of the names that fans and some media fantasized about where just that: fantasy.

“A lot of these names that you might see pop up, they look good in the media, and they are names, but that’s often – it’s not reality,” Holmes said. “Those same names that you see pop up, when you start getting into conversation, it just doesn’t work out for the best for us.

So, every team has a different plight, every team is in different place, different direction, different phase in their team building, but no, there’s nothing that we leave unturned or ignored or anything. We look at every position, we look at everything and this was the best one for us.”

Other teams did make some moves around the league. The Washington Commanders dealt away former first-round pass rushers Montez Sweat (to the Bears) and Chase Young (to the 49ers). Seattle picked up Giants DT Leonard Williams, while the Vikings dealt for one-time Lions third-string QB Joshua Dobbs from Arizona.

Holmes then explained the rationale behind the move the Lions did make, acquiring wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones from the Cleveland Browns for a 2025 sixth-round pick.

“Well, I mean obviously we – Marvin (Jones Jr.) had to step away, so we were down a receiver period, so we had to look to add another one regardless,” Holmes explained. “There’s a lot of different avenues that you can take, so this is the one that we chose.”

5 NFL players who should’ve been traded at the deadline, including Davante Adams

These five NFL players should’ve been traded at the deadline.

The 2023 NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and various NFL teams are now looking over the big moves that they’ve made to either bolster their rosters or add draft picks for the future.

As we look over the final results of this year’s trade deadline, it’s worth thinking about the NFL teams players who didn’t get moved before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET final horn.

All of these players could have found new homes by the deadline, and these teams might regret not making a move if these players wind up elsewhere in the offseason.

Let’s break down who these guys are and why they should’ve been traded.

Commanders S Kam Curl reacts to trading Montez Sweat, Chase Young

What did Kam Curl think of Tuesday’s trades?

Safety Kamren Curl arrived in Washington in 2020, the same year as defensive end Chase Young and head coach Ron Rivera. On Tuesday, Young and 2019 first-round pick Montez Sweat were traded to the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears, respectively.

And Rivera, with a new owner in town, could soon be on his way out.

Curl, who like Young and Sweat, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. However, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported Monday that the Commanders weren’t shopping Curl and preferred to retain him via a long-term extension.

At 12:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, after Sweat was traded to the Bears, Curl had the following response on Twitter — or X.

Then, at 2:47 p.m. ET, 10 minutes after Ian Rapoport of NFL Network broke the news of Young’s trade to the 49ers, Curl had the following response.

What does this mean? Absolutely nothing. Curl knows Washington values him, and NFL players all understand the league is a business, first and foremost.

Will Curl miss his teammates? Sure. But life in the NFL moves fast, and the next move from Curl will likely be a contract extension, or Washington could choose to use the franchise tag if no deal is reached.

Bengals fans really wanted to see team make a trade at deadline

Bengals fans mostly wanted to see the team make a move at the NFL trade deadline.

More than usual, this felt like the year the Cincinnati Bengals might just make a move at the NFL trade deadline.

Or not.

The very same Bengals who had broken free of tradition in so many other ways decided not to make a move at the deadline — or couldn’t — and instead stood tall on the roster they’ve built.

With needs like running back, tight end and edge rusher and a market seeing names like Chase Young traded, it seemed like this might be the year.

Instead, the Bengals are left with the current roster and fans are left to debate about the team’s inaction.

Commanders’ ownership had a ‘strong hand’ in trades of Chase Young and Montez Sweat

New Commanders’ ownership had a large say in Tuesday’s trades.

Welcome to the Josh Harris era.

While Harris and his partners officially took over as owners of Washington Commanders in July, Harris put his stamp on the franchise Tuesday ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

The Commanders, in separate trades, shipped off former first-round defensive ends Montez Sweat (Chicago Bears) and Chase Young (San Francisco 49ers), receiving second and third-round 2024 NFL draft selections, respectively.

Both defensive ends will be unrestricted free agents after the 2023 NFL season.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Washington’s moves ahead of the trade deadline was who would make these decisions. While head coach Ron Rivera is the head of football operations, and Martin Mayhew is, by title, the general manager, the job status of both are in question under new ownership.

So, Dianna Russini of The Athletic provided some context to the situation, saying, “Washington ownership had a strong hand in deciding to deal both Chase Young and Montez Sweat.”

Russini saying “many in the building” wanted to retain the pair makes sense. These are coaches coaching for their jobs, including Rivera, so keeping Sweat and Young helps the team in 2023.

But this move is much more about 2024 — and beyond.

Washington fans have long wanted ownership decisions to be made about the franchise’s future, not the short-term. Tuesday’s trade was all about the future.

One more from Russini.

Updated 49ers’ DE depth chart after trading for Chase Young

Following the acquisition of Chase Young on trade deadline day, here’s a look at what the 49ers’ edge depth chart could look like going forward.

The San Francisco 49ers made headlines on Tuesday when they acquired star pass rusher Chase Young from the Washington Commanders before the trade deadline. The 49ers reportedly acquired the former No. 2 overall pick with a third round compensatory pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Through seven games in the 2023 season, Young has recorded 15 tackles, six tackles for loss to go along with five sacks and nine quarterback hits. Young will now slide into to an already stacked defensive front that features his former college teammate at Ohio Stat and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa.

With Young on his way to San Francisco, here’s a look at what the 49ers projected defensive end depth chart could look like when they welcome the Jacksonville Jaguars to Levi’s Stadium in Week 10.

5 NFL teams that should’ve made a move at the 2023 trade deadline, including the Ravens

These 5 NFL teams should’ve made a move at the trade deadline.

The 2023 NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and various NFL teams are now looking over the big moves that they’ve made to either bolster their rosters or add draft picks for the future.

As we look over the final results of this year’s trade deadline, it’s worth thinking about the NFL teams who chose not to participate by either adding talent or gaining assets by trading away veterans.

It always takes two to tango in these situations, but these five NFL teams arguably could’ve done more to take advantage of deadline season.

It’s not the end of the world for any of these teams, but they’re worth mentioning.

Bengals remain conservative at NFL trade deadline

The Bengals didn’t make a move at the NFL trade deadline.

The Cincinnati Bengals elected to sit still at the 2023 NFL trade deadline.

Not that it falls into shocking territory. The Bengals don’t like to trade future assets to fix their current situation and stuck to their strategy here.

Of note, one report said the team was getting interest around Tee Higgins, but of course, refused. Trading him was never a consideration last offseason and wasn’t now.

As noted here and many other places, the team going to get help at running back, tight end and even an extra pass-rusher would have made sense. The offense has yet to see a non-Joe Mixon running back step up and tight end has been a disaster. Defensively, keeping Trey Hendrickson fresh for the playoffs is a priority, too.

None of this is to say the team wasn’t behind the scenes trying to make a deal or two and things can fall apart very quickly. But the lack of any sort of move at all — especially while teams with Super Bowl hopes such as the 49ers acquired Chase Young — won’t sit well with many fans.

Much speculation ends in no trades for Raiders at deadline

Much speculation ends in no trades for Raiders at deadline

The deadline has passed for NFL teams to make trades. There were some interesting moves made, with 22 different franchises making a deal, but the Raiders were not among those teams either buying or selling. They stood pat.

At 3-5, with a struggling offense, there was some speculation that the Raiders might move someone for draft capital, but nothing materialized.

The primary names that were mentioned among Raiders players were wide receivers Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow, and running back Josh Jacobs.

Adams and Jacobs’s names were mentioned because they are the stars on this offense and thus would figure to hold the most value in trade.

Renfrow was the most discussed because he has seen his role in the offense disappear two years after catching 106 passes and heading to the Pro Bowl.

All three players would probably welcome a trade in the hopes that they would see their numbers return to a range they were used to prior to this season. And also hopefully on a team with a shot at the playoffs.

Technically the Raiders are just two games under .500, but the offense has been so terrible, there is little hope they will somehow turn things around.

They have yet to score even 20 points this season, and are currently 30th in points scored and 31st in yards.
