NFL salary cap for 2020 set at $198.2M for 2020

The NFL Management Council has informed each team that they will have just short of $200 million in available cap space.

In December, it was reported that the NFL’s salary cap for 2020 would be anywhere between $196.8 million to $201.2 million per team, and now with the NFLPA voting to approve a new CBA, we now know the exact number.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the NFL Management Council informed all 32 teams that the salary cap will be set for $198.2 million per organization.

The news of the league’s salary cap comes as the new league year is still scheduled to begin Wednesday, March 25. However, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the league and players union are currently discussing the matter as it isn’t solely up to the NFL.

The increase marks a rise of $10 million as the salary cap was set at $188.2 million last year. With Yannick Ngakoue’s franchise tag factored in, that would put the Jags at an estimated $12.4 million, according to Spotrac.

Heading into free agency, the Jags are expected to cut a few more players like tight end Geoff Swaim and receiver Marqise Lee and if those transactions are completed the Jags would be at approximately $21.4 million. If Ngakoue is traded as some suspect, the Jags would add a projected amount of $18 million, which is an approximation of the non-exclusive franchise tag amount. Add that in with the releases of Swaim and Lee and the Jags would have an estimated $39.4 million in available cap space according to Spotrac’s calculations.

The Jags could add an additional four million by releasing veteran Abry Jones then another $3.1 million if there are any willing suitors to take quarterback Nick Foles in a trade. So in other words, the key will be to get Ngakoue’s cap hit of their books through a trade or extension, and if they can, they’ll be in good shape this offseason.

Lions open 2020 offseason with $50 million in available salary cap space

The 2020 CBA has passed, the salary cap has been set and Detroit Lions open the offseason with $50 million in available salary cap space.

The new NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement has passed, the 2020 salary cap has been set at $198.2 million and Detroit Lions are set to open the offseason with just over $50 million in available salary-cap space.

Recent estimations were that the salary cap could reach as high as $201 million, which is why salary cap tracking websites like Overthecap.com currently have the Lions with a bit more estimated available funds.

The $50 million projection we at Lions Wire are using factors in all the Lions recent moves — Damon Harrison and Rick Wagner releases, Danny Amendola and Don Muhlbach re-signings — as well as the adjustment to the official salary cap number.

The top 10 biggest cap hits the Lions currently have in 2020 are:

  • Matthew Stafford — $31,500,000
  • Trey Flowers — $16,739,000
  • Darius Slay — $13,400,000
  • Taylor Decker — $10,350,000
  • Marvin Jones — $9,195,883
  • Justin Coleman — $9,029,000
  • Devon Kennard — $7,175,000
  • Jesse James — $5,279,000
  • Danny Amendola — $4,968,750
  • T.J. Hockenson — $4,504,824

Based on estimations from Overthecap.com, the Lions projected draft class could cost almost $12 million in total, with the first-round pick — assuming they select at pick No. 3 overall — having a 2020 salary cap hit of $6.9 million.

This projection puts the Lions near the middle of the NFL in available salary-cap space as free agency is set to begin.

As of the publishing of this article, the legal tampering period is set to begin on Monday, with the league’s new year and free agency signing period set to open on Wednesday at 4:00 PM, EST.

How does NFL’s $198.2M salary cap impact the Bears?

The league’s salary cap has been set at $198.2 million for 2020. How does it affect the Bears’ current situation?

With the NFL players voting to ratify the new collective bargaining agreement, the salary cap for the 2020 season has been set.

The league’s salary cap has been set at $198.2 million for 2020, which is a 5.3% increase from the previous year, the smallest since 2013.

But how does the league’s new salary cap affect the Bears?

Over the Cap estimated the Bears would have roughly $13 million in salary cap space for 2020, based on a cap of $200 million.

When you factor in the $2 million less for the actual cap ($198.2 million) and roughly $3.4 million for a Roy Robertson-Harris’ second-round tender, the Bears would have about $7 million in cap space. But that’s not including Danny Trevathan’s three-year extension.

Chicago’s salary cap situation almost makes it a no brainer that the Bears must part ways with outside linebacker Leonard Floyd.

Between Floyd’s lack of production and his $13.2 million cap hit, Chicago could turn to the draft for a young prospect to line up opposite Khalil Mack and save money in the process.

General manager Ryan Pace has until the start of the new league year, still set for Wednesday, to keep Floyd or part ways with him and save $13.2 million in cap space.

NFL salary cap set at $198.2 million for 2020 | What do Jets have to spend?

Joe Douglas will have a little extra money to play with this offseason.

With players ratifying the proposed collective bargaining agreement, the NFL’s salary cap has been set at $198.2 million in 2020, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

That figure is lower than the previously projected $200 million, but it falls within the range that was originally predicted ($196.8-$201.2 million). Last year’s cap was $188.2 million, making this an increase of only 5.3 percent. It’s the league’s smallest cap increase since 2013.

The slightly increased cap gives the Jets and Joe Douglas a little extra room to work with in the general manager’s first offseason at the helm. Gang Green currently has about $50 million in cap space, but that number should exceed $60 million after a few veteran cuts. Trumaine Johnson is definitely on his way out and could be joined by a number of players, including but not limited to Darryl Roberts, Avery Williamson, Quincy Enunwa and Brian Winters.

The Jets, however, have 21 unrestricted free agents, so it remains to be seen how many new faces they will bring in this offseason. A lot of that has to do with how the team handles notable in-house free agents like Robby Anderson, Brian Poole and Jordan Jenkins, among others.

NFL sets 2020 salary cap at $198.2 million

NFL sets 2020 salary cap at $198.2 million

The details of the new collective bargaining agreement are coming in fast and the NFL just released the salary cap figures for the 2020 season.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com, the cap has risen to $198.2 million for next season.

That’s a $10 million increase over 2019 and will help the Eagles as they embark on trying to land Sidney Jones in a matter of hours.

The Eagles will have decisions to make on Alshon Jeffery, Jason Peters, Rodney McLeod, Nate Sudfeld, Jordan Howard, Jalen Mills, Ronald Darby, Nigel Bradham, and others.

Zach Ertz and Malcolm Jenkins are looking for contract extensions, and the latter could be a salary-cap casualty in the coming days.

Keeping Carson Wentz healthy, while stock-piling fast, athletic weapons will be the Eagles’ main goal this offseason.

NFL salary cap set at $198.2M for 2020 — Ravens have more than $19M in cap space

The Baltimore Ravens now have $19.23 million to spend this season after the 2020 NFL salary cap was released.

With the Collective Bargaining Agreement getting approved by the players today, the NFL has officially announced the salary cap for the 2020 season. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the salary cap is now set at $198.2 million, marking a $10 million increase from last season. It’s a little lower than many had expected with it being just a 5.3% increase, which is the lowest since 2013, according to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell.

Still, we now have a better idea of where the Baltimore Ravens stand as we enter free agency. As of right now, the Ravens have $19.23 million in available cap space, according to Over The Cap‘s list of liabilities. However, with outside linebacker Matthew Judon under the franchise tag, that number could grow if signed to a long-term extension or traded.

Baltimore still has holes at outside linebacker, inside linebacker, wide receiver and guard. Though they might not go after the top pending free agents this offseason, they should have enough money to improve their roster in free agency if they wish.

With the CBA approved and television deals on the horizon, it’s likely we’ll see a huge jump in salary cap next season as a result.

NFL sets salary cap at $198.2 million for 2020 season

NFL sets salary cap at $198.2 million for 2020 season, slightly below initial projections

The NFLPA’s approval of the CBA has many ripple effects. One of those is setting the salary cap for all 32 NFL teams for the 2020 season.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL.com, the cap will be $198.2 million for every team. That is slightly below earlier estimates, which had placed the potential cap in the $200-$205 million range. The figure represents just a 5.3 percent increase over 2019, the smallest year-to-year bump since the 2013 season.

The Cleveland Browns currently project to have about $65.3 million in cap room at the start of the new league year. Free agency is still scheduled to begin this week, with the “legal tampering” period kicking off on Monday and player signings starting on Wednesday.

The figure is lower than previous estimates

It does not include any cap carryover from prior years. The Lions project to have a little over $50 million in cap room as free agency starts, factoring in the recent release of right tackle Rick Wagner.

NFL salary cap set at $198.2M for 2020

The salary cap has been set.

With the passing of the new CBA this weekend, more information will be released for teams and how they can go about the offseason—especially when it comes to free agency.

The NFL informed teams on Sunday that the salary cap for each organization is set at $198.2 million for the 2020 season. The salary cap has steadily risen in recent years and took a $10 million leap from 2019.

The Colts are among the teams with the most salary cap space entering free agency, which is still officially set to begin on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Most of the estimated calculations have been on a $200 million salary cap, which means the Colts are likely to have somewhere just over $80 million in salary-cap space this offseason.

General manager Chris Ballard hasn’t been one to completely splurge in free agency but now he will know exactly how much money he is working with. The Colts could be in the market to add some bigger named free agents this offseason, especially given the need for more friction in the locker room.

It should be an interesting offseason with everything going on in the sports world and while the new CBA might have its implications on how the Colts conduct business in free agency.

Now, they know just how much money they have left in salary cap.

What Marshal Yanda’s retirement means for Ravens salary cap

The Baltimore Ravens will have to replace guard Marshal Yanda this offseason but will have a little extra cap space to do it.

Guard Marshal Yanda officially hung up his cleats today in a press conference, ending a 13-year career that will likely see him entered into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. The Baltimore Ravens now have the trouble of trying to replace Yanda, who was coming off one of the best years of his career.

Whether they look to their own roster, the 2020 NFL Draft or free agency for Yanda’s heir will have to wait to be seen but the Ravens will have a little more money to make a move if they wish.

According to Over The Cap, Yanda’s retirement will free up $7 million on Baltimore’s salary cap. The Ravens now have an estimated $37.74 million in available salary-cap space, which puts them at the 12th fewest in the league, according to OTC.

Baltimore has 15 remaining pending free agents this offseason, led by outside linebacker Matthew Judon and defensive tackle Michael Pierce. General manager Eric DeCosta and the Ravens have done a stellar job of re-signing most of their key players ahead of time, leaving them with few big-name free agents that could potentially leave this offseason. The extra cap space could help Baltimore in their quest to sign Judon and Pierce to long-term contract extensions or to go after some of the top players in free agency.
