LOOK: NFL teams approve 0 jersey number, one preseason cut day among new changes

Take a look at the new changes, including jersey number 0 and more, to come out of the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

The NFL owners meetings represent an opportunity for all 32 clubs to meet and lay out the boundaries for how their version of pro football will be carried out during the 17-game season.

On Tuesday, the league announced there were nine approved changes to the playing rules, three changes to the bylaws, and three changes to the resolutions.

One of the big changes that fans will readily see is the jersey number change. The number zero has been added to the available jersey numbers, and Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Calvin Ridley has already embraced it.

Here is a look at all of the changes for 2023.

Report: Eagles placed waiver claim on QB Kellen Mond

Report: The Philadelphia Eagles placed a waiver claim on former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond, but the Cleveland Browns had a higher claim and were awarded the former third-round pick

The Eagles added another quarterback to the roster on Wednesday, claiming Ian Book off waivers from the New Orleans Saints.

According to Jordan Schultz, Philadelphia initially targeted former Texas A&M quarterback and Vikings third-round pick Kellen Mond, but the Browns also placed a claim and had the higher selection.

Mond was a player we felt would interest Howie Roseman after hit waivers, and he fits the dual-threat quarterback that teams around the league covet.

Mond fell out of favor in Minnesota after he completed 29 of 51 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

He took five sacks.

Every NFL team’s most surprising roster cut

Highlighting the most shocking roster cut for each NFL team.

With the preseason in the books, every NFL team has now trimmed their roster to the league-mandated 53 players. While these rosters will certainly undergo changes over the next couple of days, each team has their initial 53-man roster set.

But when going from 80 to 53 players, there are some tough calls NFL general managers have to make in the process. And there were certainly some shocking moves across the league during the final roster cuts, which should make for some interesting moves on the waiver wire.

We’ve rounded up our NFL Wires editors to highlight the most surprising roster cut from every NFL team.

The best players in pro football history released by other teams

If you were released by an NFL team today, your career may not be over! Several pro football Hall of Famers were once cut by other teams.

On the annual occasion of the NFL’s cruel necessity to trim its rosters down to the mandated 53 players, it’s important to remember that for the hundreds of players who heard the worst possible professional news on Tuesday, August 30, that there is hope after getting cut by one team. If you’ve put good tape out there, other teams will see it, and you might get another shot that way. Perhaps a coach or executive you’ve worked with before is on another team, and that person wants you where they are now. Or maybe a team that’s wafer-thin at your position will roll the dice.

Given the sheer numbers, it makes sense that players cut by one team would find success elsewhere. In rare occasions, players who have been jettisoned, unwanted, have rolled up to other places and played at levels that landed them (at the very least) in a Ring of Honor somewhere, and (at the very most) in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Not everybody releasing players this week is right. And not every player released this week is wrong. It’s important for all of those players to remember that, and perhaps to be inspired by this list of the best players in pro football history to find themselves released by one team, only to succeed beyond anybody’s wildest expectations somewhere else.

Chargers waiving WR Michael Bandy

The Chargers are letting go of their preseason standout.

One of the stars of the preseason will now have to wait and see what his NFL future holds.

As part of the Chargers’ cut down to 53 roster spots, wide receiver Michael Bandy was waived Tuesday, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

It’s a move that likely indicates the Chargers will only keep five receivers on the initial 53: Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Joshua Palmer, DeAndre Carter, and Jalen Guyton.

Bandy was second in the league in preseason receiving yards with 172 in three games.

He showed NFL-caliber route running from the slot, but his lack of versatility hurt his chances of earning a roster spot. Allen, Palmer, Carter, and Guyton can all play inside or outside, leaving Bandy without much of a role on offense.

On special teams, Bandy would have been the backup returner behind Carter, but filling that role during the preseason left him without many opportunities to show the staff he could impact the game as a gunner.

Bandy will now have to wait to see if another team claims him on waivers. It’s a strong possibility for teams needing slot-specific receivers, especially with the way Bandy played this preseason. If he does make it through waivers, expect him to be one of Los Angeles’ first practice squad additions.

The Chargers have until 1 pm PT to finish trimming their roster to 53 players.

Former Texas K/P Cameron Dicker among Rams’ first round of roster cuts

Cameron Dicker was among the Rams’ five waived players on Tuesday.

The road to the NFL is never a straight line for players who sign as undrafted free agents. The same can be said for former kicker/punter Cameron Dicker who signed with the Los Angeles Rams following the 2022 NFL draft.

Dicker was among the LA, Rams’ first round of cuts to get the roster to 85 players. The team has to cut down the training camp rosters prior to the start of the 2022 NFL season.

Dicker spent four seasons in Austin with the Longhorns primarily as the place-kicker. He finished his career with 98.1% conversion on extra point attempts and 75.9% on field goal attempts. His best season came in 2021 when he converted 13 of his 15 attempts.

Dicker became the punter in the 2021 season full-time. He averaged 46.8 yards per punt during his senior season. He might be best known for his game-winning kick against the Oklahoma Sooners in 2018.

For now, his NFL career is on hold. But it is likely this isn’t the last we’ve heard of Dicker the kicker in the NFL.

With NFL cutting down rosters, several former LSU Tigers were released

The list of former LSU Tigers who were waived on Tuesday’s roster cutdown day.

One of the worst days of the NFL calendar for a lot of players hoping to realize their dreams of playing in the league. Teams had to cut down their roster to 53 players. With over 30 cuts per team, that means that near 1,000 young men won’t be on the active roster, as of now.

There were plenty of former LSU Tigers who didn’t make the initial 53-man roster across the NFL. The most notable names that came to mind were Breiden Fehoko and Thaddeus Moss. Fehoko and Moss were both a part of that 2019 national championship team.

Moss was looking to join Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase in Cincinnati, giving the former Heisman Trophy-winning passer another weapon he was familiar with. Moss signed with the Washington Football Team after going undrafted in 2020. This past offseason he signed with the Bengals, but now finds himself waiting for the next opportunity.

On Tuesday, these players were waived.

  • Tashawn Bower, New England Patriots
  • Tory Carter, Tennessee Titans
  • Breiden Fehoko, Los Angeles Chargers
  • Cyril Grayson, Tampa Bay Bucs
  • Frank Herron, Carolina Panthers
  • Thaddeus Moss, Cincinnati Bengals
  • JaCoby Stevens, Philadelphia Eagles
  • Stephen Sullivan, Carolina Panthers
  • Badara Traore, Jacksonville Jaguars

Some of these players could be added to the team’s practice squads. LSU Tigers Wire will provide those updates when they are made official.

Fantasy football: 3 players who won on NFL cut-down day

Which players are the biggest winners from the NFL’s roster cuts?

NFL cut-down day is a wild roller coaster of emotions for players and fans alike, but the unfortunate outcomes for some create huge opportunities for others. In fantasy football, it’s imperative to be able to take advantage of this cracked-open doors on draft day.

1) WR Marquez Callaway, New Orleans Saints: While it was already known for weeks that wide receiver Michael Thomas (ankle) wouldn’t be ready for Week 1, some reports gave an encouraging outlook for his return date. The Saints made it official by placing him on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, which guarantees he will miss the first six weeks. In this case, it will be only five games, since New Orleans is on its bye in the sixth week. Then Thomas has to shake off the rust. Callaway, who enjoyed a strong preseason, gets at least a five-game runway to show he can do it when games actually matter. Don’t be afraid to invest in the middle rounds of drafts.

It’s not too late to sign up for The Huddle and dominate!

2) RB Kenneth Gainwell, Philadelphia Eagles: The release of veteran Jordan Howard makes Gainwell the primary backup to Miles Sanders. Boston Scott showed last year he doesn’t have the chops to be a traditional rusher and should remain entrenched in a third-down role if something where to cost Sanders time. Gainwell figures to spell the former Penn Stater, whose resume over the past five years of combined NFL and collegiate ball shows one season with more than 180 carries and just two years with over 200 total touches. Handcuff the pair, and non-Sanders owners should treat Gainwell as a high-upside speculative buy early in the second half of their drafts.

3) QB Mac Jones, New England Patriots: The first-rounder outplayed Cam Newton in training camp and preseason action, so Bill Belichick rewarded him with the starting job by outright releasing Cam Newton. Jones isn’t likely to be a regular fantasy contributor, but he will stabilize the overall offense. It was the right decision, and gamers can treat him as a fringe matchup play. The honorable mention goes to this backfield, because Newton is no longer around to steal a dozen scores. Huge win for fantasy footballers!

Chargers waive 11 players ahead of NFL roster cuts

The Los Angeles Chargers roster is now down to 69 players.

The trimming has begun.

The Los Angeles Chargers officially waived the following nine players on Monday afternoon:

DB Donte Vaughn

EDGE Davin Bellamy

TE Matt Sokol

LB Nate Evans

OT Darius Harper

WR John Hurst

EDGE Jessie Lemonier

CB KJ Sails

DL Willie Yarbary

In addition, LS Cole Mazza and OL Tyree St. Louis were waived/injured, which means they will be placed on waivers before being placed on the injured reserve.

None of these 11 cuts are surprising.

With Mazza let go of, that means that veteran Matt Overton will be the team’s long snapper to begin the regular season.
