2024 NFL draft: Preseason EDGE watch list and early rankings

2024 NFL draft: Preseason EDGE watch list and early rankings from Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon

The EDGE moniker is a relatively recent name, but EDGE players have been around for a long time. It’s essentially a mix of outside linebackers and defensive ends who have the primary task of rushing the passer. Sometimes they’re stand-up OLB types (think Von Miller), while others are hand-in-dirt ends (think Myles Garrett).

It’s a position where collegiate production is important but athletic upside matters quite a bit, perhaps more than any other spot. The early evaluation of this EDGE class shows a couple of high-end prospects and then a group that is variable based on team/scheme preferences; the No. 3 here might not be in the top 8 for a team that doesn’t run the particular type of scheme that he best fits.

These are very fluid rankings. In general, these are early impressions about the NFL potential of players who still have a considerable amount of football to play before they’re drafted. Some underclassmen are included here strictly as mentions; it is not meant to advocate for a player to leave early.

After watching enough to get a baseline feel for the players, here is an early listing and my preliminary ranking for the EDGEs in the NFL draft class of 2024.

Two Badgers ranked in top 40 NFL Draft prospects by Fox Sports

Offensive lineman Joe Tippmann and nose tackle Keeanu Benton were ranked highly in expert Rob Rang’s (Fox Sports) 2023 NFL Draft rankings.

Both offensive lineman Joe Tippmann and nose tackle Keeanu Benton were ranked highly in expert Rob Rang’s (Fox Sports) 2023 NFL Draft rankings that came out earlier this month.

Joe Tippmann came in at 26th overall and has been climbing the draft boards recently and has been ranked within the top 30 for multiple different outlets over the last couple months. His 6-foot-6, 315 pound frame is expected to transition well to the league.

Keeanu Benton came in not too far behind his teammate, being ranked 33rd overall in the draft. Benton just wrapped up a four-year career with the Badgers and impressed at the Senior Bowl, likely increasing his stock as a result.

Both of the athletes were invited to the 2023 NFL Draft combine in a few weeks in Indianapolis where they will also be joined by teammate and fellow prospect linebacker/edge Nick Herbig.

Top draft expert ranks Badger prospect in top 30

Offensive lineman Joe Tippmann was listed as the 27th overall player in NFL draft expert Daniel Jeremiah’s 2023 NFL Draft prospect rankings.

Offensive lineman Joe Tippmann was listed as the 27th overall player in NFL media analyst and draft expert Daniel Jeremiah’s top 50 2023 NFL Draft prospect rankings that he released in late January.

The 6-foot-6, 315+ pound athlete isn’t as widely recognized as some of the former Badger offensive linemen that have entered the draft in recent years, but his size and athletic ability should play well in the NFL.

Tippmann along with linebacker Nick Herbig and nose tackle Keeanu Benton are the three Wisconsin athletes that were invited to the scouting combine next month and will look to prove themselves ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft.
