NFL Pro Bowl: Geno Atkins is lone Bengals player, others named alternates

Geno Atkins will rep the Bengals at the Pro Bowl.

Geno Atkins is going back to the Pro Bowl.

The NFL announced the star Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle was elected to the 2020 Pro Bowl.

Atkins is in the middle of a down season with just 4.5 sacks so far, but his colleagues and those around the league know better than to leave him out of the fray. He’s the team’s lone selection and the Bengals have now sent someone in nine consecutive seasons.

Elsewhere, Joe Mixon was named a fifth alternate. Returner Brandon Wilson, is a second alternate.

We had earlier outlined the case for Mixon and Wilson to earn Pro Bowl nods. They’ll do so if enough players in front of them on the ballot opt out of the event.

Alabama has become a factory for NFL teams looking to add high-quality talent through the draft. The recent voting for the 2019 Pro Bowl is a perfect representation of that notion.

On Tuesday night, the rosters were revealed and included seven former Crimson Tide standouts, including:

  • Derrick Henry, RB, Tennessee Titans
  • Mark Ingram, RB, Baltimore Ravens
  • Julio Jones, WR, Atlanta Falcons
  • Dont’a Hightower, LB, New England Patriots
  • Marlon Humphrey, CB, Baltimore Ravens
  • Minkah Fitzpatrick, S, Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Eddie Jackson, S, Chicago Bears

In addition to those players, other former Alabama standouts, such as Raiders rookie running back Josh Jacobs and Colts offensive center Ryan Kelly, were named as Pro Bowl alternates.

The Crimson Tide continues its takeover of the NFL.

Cory Littleton snubbed from 2020 Pro Bowl despite stellar season

Cory Littleton has been one of the best linebackers in the NFL, but he didn’t make the Pro Bowl.

The NFL announced the Pro Bowl rosters for the AFC and NFC squads on Tuesday night, and only two Rams made the cut. Cory Littleton was not one of them, surprisingly.

Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey were the two Rams who were selected, but it should’ve been a trio of defenders heading to Orlando for the all-star game. If anything, Littleton should’ve gotten the nod before Ramsey, who’s only having an average season at cornerback.

Littleton, on the other hand, has become one of the best linebackers in the NFL and is deserving of more recognition than he receives, and that could have started with him being named to the Pro Bowl.

He ranks eighth in the NFL with 124 tackles and is tied for ninth among all linebackers with eight passes defensed. Only three other players have at least 100 tackles, two sacks, five tackles for loss and two interceptions.

The reason for him not being selected to the Pro Bowl was more about the guys he’s going up against than his individual performance. In the NFC, two linebackers always reign supreme: Bobby Wagner and Luke Kuechly. They were both named to the Pro Bowl this season, ranking second and fourth in the NFL in tackles, respectively. Wagner has only broken up six passes with one forced fumble and one interception, while Kuechly has two interceptions, 11 passes defensed and only three tackles for loss.

Littleton has more forced fumbles and fumble recoveries than both linebackers, more sacks (2.5) than both of them combined, and more tackles for loss than Kuechly (tied with Wagner). Littleton has also hit the quarterback four times, which is one more than Wagner and two more than Kuechly.

Littleton isn’t a big name, but when looking at the numbers and his overall performance this season, he’s certainly among the top linebackers in football. He’s only getting better, too, improving immensely as a run defender since last season.

Here’s where he ranked among linebackers a few weeks ago, according to Pro Football Focus.

Littleton is in the final year of his contract and is sure to break the bank next year, whether it’s with the Rams or another team. Being named to the Pro Bowl would’ve boosted his stock and increased his negotiating leverage as a free agent, but it also would’ve put his name on the map among casual fans outside of Los Angeles.

He’ll get there eventually – possibly this year when injury replacements are announced – but regardless, Littleton has shown he’s a premier linebacker in just his second season as a starter.

Should any Bengals go to the Pro Bowl this year?

Should any Bengals get the honor?

It’s easy to scoff at the notion of a 1-13 team like the Cincinnati Bengals sending any players to the 2020 Pro Bowl.

Fair. But the miserable season doesn’t mean there haven’t been some special individual performances. The Bengals aren’t going to win popular votes regardless, but alternate nods might be on the table.

Some candidates include:

Joe Mixon: Is it too late? Mixon had a terrible start to his year but he’s up to 12th in rushing leaguwide at 925 yards. He’s bumped his average to four yards per carry and scored three times, with the third-most rushing yards in the NFL since Week 9. It’s probably too little, too late, but the strength of his bounceback after leading the AFC in rushing last year shouldn’t go totally unnoticed.

Brandon Wilson: One of the best Bengals breakouts this year, Wilson still leads the NFL in returning average (31.3) despite going to injured reserve on December 7. On 20 attempts, he racked up 625 yards and a score. He hurt his hand making a tackle, but he’s worth a note.

Kevin Huber: Yes, a punter. Huber had downed 26 punts inside the 20-yard line, a top-10 mark this season. His net of 41.5 yards is 12th. In a testament to strong special teams, he’s forced 27 fair catches, leading the NFL, and 19 attempts at returns by opponents have only generated 101 yards on a 5.3 average (fifth).

Lamar Jackson topped all NFL players in Pro Bowl voting

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has taken the NFL by storm, getting more fan votes for the Pro Bowl than any other player

As if anyone needed more reason to believe Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is the NFL’s MVP, the people have spoken. At the end of Pro Bowl voting by fans, Jackson is not only the most voted-on quarterback but he also received more votes than any other player.

Jackson finished with 704,699 votes, beating second-placed Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson by more than 160,000 votes, according to a league press release.

The fan vote is just one portion of what determines if a player make the Pro Bowl, with players and coaches also getting to vote. Each section counts as 1/3 towards a player’s Pro Bowl nomination.

Jackson isn’t the only Ravens player to get a bunch of fan votes. Fullback Patrick Ricard, tight end Mark Andrews, tackle Orlando Brown Jr., guard Marshal Yanda, kicker Justin Tucker and cornerback Marcus Peters all top their respective positions.

If the fan vote holds true, Baltimore will have seven players receive Pro Bowl nomination. Though the hope is the Ravens have to turn it down because they’re too busy practicing for Super Bowl LIV.
