Patriots vs Texans 2023 live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch online

How to watch Thursday’s preseason opener between the Patriots and Texans.

The New England Patriots get their first taste of real football on Thursday night with a head-to-head showdown with the Houston Texans slated for the preseason opener.

Houston wasted no time in naming rookie first-round draft pick C.J. Stroud as the starting quarterback for the game. That move alone creates excitement right out of the gates and should draw even more eyes to this match-up.

With that said, the Patriots aren’t expected to play their starters in this meeting. This will be a game where they likely highlight Bailey Zappe, Trace McSorley and possibly even Malik Cunningham at quarterback.

We should also get an opportunity to see more of the rookie standouts, like Christian Gonzalez, Marte Mapu, Keion White, Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte.

The offense for the Patriots will obviously draw the most attention with Bill O’Brien taking over as the new play-caller. Will he be able to get the unit back on track? That question starts getting answered on Thursday.

Here’s how to watch the game.

Viewing info for Bengals vs. Packers in preseason action.

The Cincinnati Bengals will be on the field for their first preseason game of the 2023 season Friday against the Green Bay Packers.

This will be a day after the Packers are at Paycor Stadium for a joint practice, the Bengals only one since the fight between teams in their joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams in the 2022 preseason. Zac Taylor’s relationship with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur helped the two teams to set up the joint practice before this game — and a brawl broke out anyway.

It will be the Packers’ first time without Aaron Rodgers on the roster in 18 seasons, with Jordan Love taking the reins as Green Bay’s newest starting quarterback.

Here’s a quick look at viewing info and key details about the matchup to know, including the forecast and opponent info.

Report: Texans rookie C.J. Stroud will start on Thursday vs Patriots

The Patriots will be the first NFL team that tests Texans’ rookie QB C.J. Stroud.

The New England Patriots will face Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud in the preseason opener on Thursday night, per KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.

Stroud was selected with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

He came to Houston after spending his collegiate career at Ohio State. He had a strong final season with the Buckeyes in 2022, when he tallied 3,688 passing yards, 41 touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 games.

The quarterback has been working with the Texans’ first-team offense over the past three days, per Wilson. This will be Stroud’s first in-game opportunity at the NFL level.

At the very least, this news should help the Patriots defense prepare in a real game-like setting. They know who the starter will be, and they can now prepare accordingly to the matchup.

For Patriots fans, it’s an opportunity to see a rookie standout matching wits with one of the league’s top defensive units on the road.

Postgame analysis: Jags starters shine in 24-13 loss to Browns

The #Jaguars fell to 0-2 this preseason after a loss to the Browns. However, their starters shined after getting off to a 13-0 start.

The Jacksonville Jaguars exited Friday’s game against the Cleveland Browns with their second consecutive preseason loss of 2022, but there was a lot to be optimistic about heading forward. While their backup players struggled mightily, their starters on offense and defense performed well.

In the first two drives of the game, the Jags accumulated field goals. The first offensive drive of the day by them lasted for 12 plays, and the unit was able to total 73 yards along the way. It started with a huge play as quarterback Trevor Lawrence was able to hit receiver Zay Jones up the sideline for a 32-yard reception. Then two plays later, Lawrence came away with another first-down by rushing for 11 yards after faking a handoff to Travis Etienne.

Speaking of Etienne, they got him heavily involved to finish the drive. His first touch of the night went for 12 yards. He then received two more carries for four yards a piece before the drive ended, and eventually, kicker Elliott Fry was able to put one in from 23 yards away. That brought the score to 3-0.

The defense didn’t want to be outdone, though. After forcing a Browns punt in the game’s initial drive, they shut down the Browns’ second offensive drive in three plays. Safety Rayshawn Jenkins was able to lay a big hit on running back D’Ernest Johnson, causing a fumble that was recovered by cornerback Shaquill Griffin.

The Jags recovered on Cleveland’s 23 as a result, but the offense had a three-and-out to follow the recovery. Kicker Ryan Santoso then came in for a 38-yard attempt that was good and put the score at 6-0.

During the Browns’ third drive, the Jags’ defense forced another punt after seven plays. The Jags’ first-team offense found themselves on Cleveland’s 37-yard line afterward and were able to put together a 12-play drive that ended with an Evan Engram receiving touchdown for nine yards.

In the drive that led to a touchdown, the Jags got notables like Etienne, Jones (through a 15-yard reception), and rookie running back Snoop Conner involved to set them up for success. Jags coach Doug Pederson was able to take advantage of their efforts with a beautiful play-action fake that led the defense to the right and left the left side of the field open for Engram to score.

After that point, the backups were put in the game and were unable to get much going. They, unfortunately, ended the night with three turnovers and were unable to score after the first team got them off to a 13-0 start.

The first turnover was an interception that was a pass from quarterback C.J. Beathard intended for receiver Jeff Cotton Jr. The third-year receiver had the ball in his grasp, but it was ripped out of his hands by defensive back Martin Emerson Jr. for a pick-six. That put the score at 14-13 in favor of Cleveland.

The second turnover was a fumble by tight end Luke Farrell in the third quarter. The second-year player hauled in a catch from quarterback Jake Luton that actually would’ve been a fourth-down conversion. However, safety D’Anthony Bell was able to knock the ball loose as Farrell didn’t secure it like he should’ve while attempting to get yards after the catch.

The last interception came in the fourth quarter as Luton and the backups were at Cleveland’s nine. After rolling out to his right, Luton tried to hit a receiver in the end zone, but was picked off by Browns cornerback Herb Miller.

The pick was indicative of Luton’s overall rough day as he ended the game 12-of-21 for 92 yards plus the pick. He finished the night with a rating of 48.1. That’s certainly not where a player wants to be heading into Tuesday’s roster cuts, but ultimately time will tell if the Jags look to keep developing him throughout camp.

As for Lawrence, he only completed 50% of his passes (6-of-12). However, he made several explosive plays for the team when he was making completions and looked to be in command of the offense. There were also a few passes that were dropped by his skill guys where arguments could be made that the balls were catchable.

In addition to Lawrence’s good performance, it was good to see some of the first and second-team skill weapons make plays for the young quarterback. Etienne looked explosive in his first game back, and Jones brought explosive playmaking ability to the mix through the air, leading the team in receptions with 47 yards.

Then lastly, fans got a glimpse of the things Pederson could cook up with Engram as well. That’s huge because the scheme is expected to get great production out of the tight end position, and the hope is that Engram will lead the way.

Overall, it was an encouraging day when looking at the performance of the players who fans will see the most in the regular season, but the group must continue to improve. The performance of the backups is something that will need to improve in the next two preseason games, too, or fans will have a reason to be concerned about the Jags’ depth in the near future.

WR Christian Kirk among 7 Jags players who won’t play vs. Browns

As expected, the Jags will play it safe with WR Christian Kirk (ankle) as they face the Browns Friday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be sitting seven players in Friday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Among them will be receiver Christian Kirk, who rolled his ankle in practice this week.

While the injury isn’t believed to be serious, the decision to sideline Kirk doesn’t come as a surprise as coach Doug Pederson has been smart with his players. Additionally, there is no shortage of receivers on the team, at the moment, as there are currently 12 on the roster. That said, there will now be more playing time for some bubble receivers as Laviska Shenault Jr. is also sitting on Friday.

As for the rest of the players who will sit, they were mostly expected as Pederson mentioned many of them earlier this week.

Lovie Smith outlines goals for Texans vs. Saints preseason opener

The Houston Texans take on the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 13. Coach Lovie Smith outlined what he wanted to see in the preseason opener.

The Houston Texans take on the New Orleans Saints Aug. 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Caesars Superdome to kickoff the preseason.

For the Texans, the preseason opener against the Saints represents an opportunity to sustain the positivity and energy that has been surging throughout NRG Stadium since the promotion of Lovie Smith from defensive coordinator to the big role following the firing of coach David Culley.

Smith met with reporters after the eighth day of training camp practice Sunday at Houston Methodist Training Center, and helped outline what he wanted to see from his team in the preseason opener at New Orleans.

Evaluating the NFL debut of Houston Texans QB Davis Mills

Rookie third-round QB Davis Mills made his NFL debut in preseason for the Houston Texans. Here is a breakdown of how he did.

Only 10 minutes into the first quarter on Saturday, rookie quarterback Davis Mills took the field to make his first appearance as No. 10 on the Houston Texans.

According to coach David Culley, the team wanted to see how the rookie would respond.

“We wanted to see him in all kinds of situations, and basically we want to see him at this point handle the passing game and kind of do both,” Culley said.

The rookie’s appearance has been highly anticipated since his selection at 67th overall and as a potential heir apparent to the Deshaun Watson QB-debacle that Houston is currently engaged in. Mills finished 11 of 22 against the Green Bay Packers for 112 yards, no touchdowns, 1 interception and 1 sack. However, despite the seemingly mediocre stat line, there was a lot to learn about the young quarterback on film.

C.J. Henderson delivers standout performance in preseason opener

Henderson silenced any trade rumors with an impressive performance in the Jaguars’ preseason opener.

Perhaps no other player on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster has been subject to more negative speculation this offseason than second-year cornerback C.J. Henderson. After injuries limited the 2020 ninth overall pick to just eight games as a rookie, the team signed a high-profile free agent in Shaquill Griffin at the position and also drafted a corner in the second round in Tyson Campbell.

Pair that with rumors reported last week that the Jaguars could be looking to trade Henderson, and he was a bit of an afterthought heading into the Jags preseason opener against Cleveland on Saturday.

Henderson silenced those critics, though, with an excellent performance in the loss to Cleveland. Henderson was targeted four times, allowing just two catches for 15 yards. He also broke up two passes and finished with the lowest passer rating allowed on the team.

“[He played] 28 plays. He played pretty good,” coach Urban Meyer said about Henderson’s performance. “He didn’t get winning performance, but he got honorable mention. He is very talented obviously, but it’s just seeing him getting back in game mode.”

It’s possible the team could still be shopping Henderson, but he was arguably the most impressive defensive back on the field Saturday. For a team that was once one of the worst against the pass, he may not be a player the team could afford to part ways with.

Trevor Lawrence shares thoughts on his first preseason performance vs. Browns

“I was ready to get out there. It’s been a long time coming. It’s been my dream,” Lawrence said after his NFL debut.

The day Trevor Lawrence has been waiting for since he picked up a football took place Saturday as he made his NFL debut for the Jacksonville Jaguars. And while it wasn’t a perfect debut due to taking two sacks and missing a few throws, Lawrence said he felt poised when taking snaps behind center.

“I feel like the first time out there, I felt comfortable, felt poised,” Lawrence said, according to ESPN. “Obviously, the first play’s not kind of what you want for the first play, but after that, I thought we did a good job. We communicated well up front. They did a really good job of protection. At least one of those sacks was on me, for sure, just holding the ball too long. That’s something I’ll work on. Just maneuvering in the pocket is something I’ve always got to work on.

“Other than that, I missed an easy one to Marvin, a little quick out I wish I would have hit. But other than that, I felt good out there. I think we were seeing it, all on the same page. There’s obviously things to clean up, but I thought it was a pretty good day.”

Despite not staying as upright as coaches and fans would’ve liked, Lawrence finished his night 6-of-9 for 71 yards. His highlight throw went to receiver Marvin Jones Jr. on a play where the offensive line gave him ample time to throw after the receivers couldn’t initially get open. However, understanding that it’s simply hard to be covered for more than four seconds, Jones broke free vertically, and Lawrence unloaded the ball almost perfectly.

Of course, some nervousness came with his debut, which the rookie quarterback also discussed after the game.

“The first play you’re a little bit, especially first game here in the NFL, you’re a little bit nervous; but after that, you’re just playing ball,” Lawrence said. “Definitely felt that [comfort] setting in.

“I usually typically get nervous before the first game of any season anyway, so that’s pretty standard. I was excited. I was ready to get out there. It’s been a long time coming. It’s been my dream.”

It was far from a perfect night even on Lawrence’s part, but there were a lot of positives for him and the team to build on. His poise, despite getting sacked twice, really showed as he converted two third-down plays (one of which was the aforementioned play to Jones) during two separate series.

Now, with his first game out of the way, Lawrence and the Jags will turn their attention to the New Orleans Saints, who have a great first-team defense to learn from. There is a lot to clean up on Lawrence and the team’s part, but that’s exactly what the preseason is for.
