Falcons’ Deion Jones named one of NFL’s top 11 linebackers

TD Wire’s Mark Schofield ranked Jones as the No. 7 linebacker in the league.

As we pointed out on Wednesday, the Atlanta Falcons aren’t exactly loaded with young talent. Right guard Chris Lindstrom was the only member of the team to make Pro Football Focus’ top 25 players under 25 list.

But while the Falcons may be lacking in talent under 25, they still have some outstanding players on the roster. Grady Jarrett, Calvin Ridley, Foye Oluokun and Deion Jones are each under 30 and among the team’s best players.

Jones landed on Touchdown Wire’s list of the NFL’s top 11 linebackers. TD Wire’s Mark Schofield ranked him as the No. 7 linebacker in the league.

“Last year was not the best season for the Atlanta Falcons, and that includes linebacker Deion Jones,” writes Schofield. “But even as the team was struggling Jones found ways to impact the game and continue his growth as a linebacker. He set career-high marks with five sacks, six quarterback hits and eight QB hurries, as the Falcons tried to find ways to consistently pressure the opposing passer.

Jones also has great man and zone coverage skills for a linebacker, as we saw back in 2019. While he was picked on a bit more in coverage last season — he allowed an NFL passer rating of 103.8 when targeted, the worst number of his career — he still notched a pair of interceptions and three pass breakups. If his coverage numbers return to form, he’ll appear even higher on lists like this next summer.”

It’s true that Jones was somewhat overlooked in 2020 due to the team’s struggles, along with fellow linebacker Foye Oluokun’s emergence. Plus, as Schofield pointed out, Jones’ coverage skills weren’t quite up to par last season. However, this was not entirely on Jones.

Atlanta’s lack of pass rush, inexperienced secondary and sputtering offense each impacted the middle linebacker’s effectiveness. Under new defensive coordinator Dean Pees, expect Jones to bounce back in a big way this season.

Falcons GM Terry Fontenot: ‘We’re going to add to every position’

One of the first things Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot talked about when he took over was the importance of creating competition at each position.

One of the first things that Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot talked about when he took over was the importance of creating competition at each position. This kind of philosophy change is necessary as the team had grown complacent over the past few seasons under the previous regime.

Fontenot wants competitive players who aren’t afraid to go out and earn a spot. NFL Network’s Jim Trotter and Steve Wyche had the new Falcons GM on their Hustle & Flow podcast to discuss his vision for the team and how he plans to go about improving it.

“We are going to add to every position,” Fontenot said. “We’ll build strength. We’re not afraid to build strength. We’re going to add to every position. It’s about adding. We want to be a culture of competition, and Arthur Smith has said it. We want to bring in smart, tough, highly-competitive football players that are going to fit this culture. And we’re going to do that at every position, whether it’s quarterback, whether it’s receiver.”

Fontenot knows exactly what he wants the team to be and comes from a New Orleans Saints organization that has dominated an extremely tough NFC South in recent years. Watch Fontenot discuss what made him want to join the Saints’ biggest rival, as shared by Steve Wyche on Twitter below.

Falcons rookie Matt Hennessy appears on track to start at guard

Falcons rookie Matt Hennessy, a third-round pick out of Temple, looks poised to win the job over James Carpenter and Matt Gono.

The Atlanta Falcons host the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 on September 13, which is now just over two weeks away. One of the team’s most intriguing position battles is at the left guard spot.

Falcons rookie Matt Hennessy, a third-round pick out of Temple, looks poised to win the job over James Carpenter and Matt Gono. Hennessy has been primarily running with the first-ream offense over the past two weeks.

The team even released expensive backup Jamon Brown earlier this week just one year after signing a three-year contract in 2019. According to head coach Dan Quinn, though, the competition is still open, per William McFadden’s below Tweet.

Meanwhile, Hennessy is preparing like he’s going to be the starting left guard. As tweeted by Kelsey Conway after Wednesday’s practice, the rookie lineman said he was ready to do whatever the Falcons need from him this season.

You can watch Hennessy talk about staying ready below, as shared by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure.

Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett has been dominating the NFL trenches since 2015, but is only just now receiving the credit he deserves.

Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett has been dominating the NFL trenches since 2015, but is only just now receiving the credit he deserves.

An impressive 2019 campaign in which he racked up 69 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 16 QB hits helped Jarrett make his first Pro Bowl. The former fifth-round pick has become arguably the second-best interior lineman behind Aaron Donald.

Players around the league have taken notice. NFL Network released its Top 100 Players list, and Jarrett was voted in at No. 91. Watch the full three-minute segment on Atlanta’s star DT below:
