Commanders DT Jonathan Allen ranked among the NFL’s top 100 players for 3rd straight year

Jonathan Allen is once again ranked as one of the NFL’s top 100 players.

The 2023 NFL season was a frustrating one for Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. After a midseason loss to the New York Giants that began the derailment of a once-promising season, the usually reserved team captain went off in the locker room, frustrated with the team’s constant losing.

Later in the year, Allen again became frustrated, even hinting that he considered playing elsewhere. Overall, it was a tough season for Allen. But it wasn’t just Allen who struggled; the entire team struggled, which explained the 4-13 record.

After making the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2022, Allen did not make it last season, and his numbers were down. Regardless, he was still viewed as one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles.

The NFL continued its reveal of the league’s top 100 players for 2024 on Thursday, revealing players 51-60. Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner was ranked No. 59, and wide receiver Terry McLaurin was ranked No. 97.

Allen comes in at No. 54.

Allen earned his third consecutive appearance on this list after recording 5.5 sacks and 19 QB hits, bringing his career total for the former up to 39. Though that’s a bit of a down year for him, he’s also valued by his team and fellow players for his leadership and intangibles, evidenced by the seven-year vet being retained by Dan Quinn to help lead the Commanders into a new era while other pieces were parted with.

Allen is rejuvenated under new head coach Dan Quinn. He and Daron Payne, who also had a down year in 2023, could be in store for a career year under Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. The dangerous interior duo will get plenty of opportunities to rush opposing quarterbacks in 2024.

Jonathan Allen named one of the NFL’s top 100 players

Jonathan Allen makes the NFL Network top 100 list for the first time in his career.

It’s been quite the year for Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. Just before training camp opened in 2021, Allen signed a four-year, $72 million extension to remain in Washington for the foreseeable future.

Allen went on to have the best season of his NFL career, recording 62 tackles, including 10 for loss, nine sacks and 30 quarterback hits. He earned a trip to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his five-year career.

Now, Allen receives another honor, as he was named as one of the NFL Network’s top 100 players, coming in at No. 88. The top 100 is determined by player votes, making the honor even more prestigious.

Allen is one of the NFL’s top defensive tackles by any metric and a team captain. In addition to his outstanding work on the field, Allen is also active off the field. He was Washington’s 2021 nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

While Washington’s defense struggled as a unit last season, Allen was outstanding. The Commanders are counting on a bounceback season from their defense in 2022, but there are no concerns with Allen.

Terry McLaurin not voted as one of the NFL Network’s top 100 players

Terry McLaurin not one of the NFL Network’s top 100 players. But wait until you see some of the receivers who are ahead of McLaurin.

The NFL Network has revealed 90 of its top 100 players, and the list included two members of the Washington Football Team.

Defensive end Chase Young came in at No. 61 overall, while right guard Brandon Scherff was the No. 98 ranked player.

The players vote on the annual top 100 list and one Washington player not listed was wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

It’s a fair question to ask if McLaurin is one of the league’s top 100 players. For anyone who has watched him play over the first two years of his career, you definitely consider him one of the NFL’s top 100 players.

While McLaurin didn’t make the list, several wide receivers did, some of whom aren’t nearly the player McLaurin is. For instance, Cole Beasley of the Buffalo Bills was ranked No. 96 while Corey Davis of the New York Jets was ranked No. 91.

Are we kidding here?

Beasley has had a good career. He’s still a good NFL wide receiver. He’s nowhere close to McLaurin.

Meanwhile, Davis enters his fifth NFL season in 2021 and his first with the Jets. The Tennessee Titans picked Davis No. 5 overall back in 2017 and were so disappointed with his production they didn’t exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

Davis had a career season in 2020, but is even a No. 1 wide receiver on his team? He wasn’t in Tennessee. It remains to be seen what his role will be with the Jets.

McLaurin is a No. 1 receiver. He does everything well. Now, he has a quarterback who will throw him the deep ball in Ryan Fitzpatrick.

It’s difficult to imagine McLaurin not being on this list next year.

How high does Chase Young rank on NFL Network Top 100 Players List?

Where is Chase Young on the NFL Network Top 100 Players List?

The NFL Network revealed part one of its Top 100 Players List on Sunday evening. Players 41-100 were named on Sunday, while players 40-11 will be unveiled on Aug. 22, and the top 10 is revealed on Aug. 28.

Washington right guard Brandon Scherff was one of the first players named to the list, coming in at No. 98.

Also named to the list on Sunday night was Washington defensive end Chase Young. Young came in at No. 61.

The 2020 NFL defensive rookie of the year, Young finished his first season with 44 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one touchdown.

Young is already making his presence felt this preseason. In just the third play from scrimmage in Washington’s preseason opener at New England, Young raced around Patriots left tackle Isaiah Wynn to hit quarterback Cam Newton for a strip-sack.

The play was ruled an incomplete pass. It didn’t matter. Young made his presence known and gave everyone a preview of what his 2021 season could like.

If Young’s career goes as planned, he’ll be much higher on this list beginning next year.

Washington’s Brandon Scherff lands at No. 98 on NFL Network’s Top 100 Players list

Brandon Scherff is ranked No. 98 on the NFL Network Top 100 Players List.

It’s that time of the year again where the NFL Network releases its list of the top 100 players in the NFL.

The NFL Network first released the first 10 players on the list, 100-91, and a member of the Washington Football Team came in at No. 98.

Washington right guard Brandon Scherff is entering his seventh NFL season in 2021 after being picked No. 5 overall in the 2015 NFL draft.

In his six NFL seasons, Scherff has been named to the Pro Bowl four times. Injuries played a role in the two years Scherff didn’t make the Pro Bowl. He received the ultimate honor in 2020 when he was named first-team All-Pro. He was the Washington player named to the All-Pro team in owner Daniel Snyder’s tenure.

Scherff is currently playing under his second franchise tag in 2021.
