NFL announces 5-game international schedule

NFL announces 5-game international schedule

Prior to the Raiders relocating to Las Vegas they had played an international game five times in six years. That was twice in Mexico City and thrice in London. The last being in 2019 when they faced the Bears in the first ever NFL game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With each year that passes, it seems like it could be time again for the NFL to ask them to head across the pond to play a game. At least with another team hosting.

This year two of the Raiders away teams are playing overseas, so there seemed to be a chance they would return, or perhaps be one of the first teams to play in Germany. But no. The NFL released their international schedule today and the Raiders were not among the teams.

Here is the schedule:

Who: Falcons vs Jaguars
What: Week 4 matchup
When: October 1
Where: Wembley Stadium, London

Who: Jaguars vs Bills
What: Week 5 matchup
When: October 8
Where: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Who: Ravens vs Titans
What: Week 6 matchup
When: October 15
Where: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Who: Dolphins vs Chiefs
What: Week 9 matchup
When: November 5
Where: Frankfurt Stadium, Germany

Who: Colts vs Patriots
What: Week 10 matchup
When: November 12
Where: Frankfurt Stadium, Germany

The full NFL schedule is scheduled to be released tomorrow, May 11 at 5pm Pacific (8pm ET).

NFL announces international game dates, matchups for 2023 season

The NFL has announced the dates, times, and matchups for its international series of games in the 2023 season.

The National Football League has announced the opponents, dates, and locations for the five International Games to be played in 2023 across London, UK and Frankfurt, Germany.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will kick off the 2023 NFL International Games on Sunday, October 1, as they play the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium, in what will be their landmark 10th regular season home game in London.

The London focus then shifts to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the Buffalo Bills take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, October 8.  This game for Jacksonville means they will play two regular season games outside of the US – a first for the NFL.

The following Sunday, 15 October, the Tennessee Titans will play the Baltimore Ravens, also at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the only purpose-built NFL stadium outside of the US, to wrap the 2023 NFL London Games.

As part of its commitment to play regular season games in Germany for the next four years (beginning in 2022) the NFL will play two games in 2023 in Frankfurt, having played the inaugural Germany game in Munich back in November 2022.

The Super Bowl LVII Champion Kansas City Chiefs kick off the 2023 NFL Frankfurt Games on Sunday, November 5, as they play the Miami Dolphins at Frankfurt Stadium, home of Eintracht Frankfurt.

The following weekend, Sunday, November 12, the New England Patriots face the Indianapolis Colts, also at Frankfurt Stadium, to complete the 2023 NFL International Games.

Will the Broncos play an international game in 2023?

Two teams on Broncos’ road schedule will “host” international games this year, but Denver seems more likely to play in Mexico after 2023.

The NFL announced five home teams for its 2023 international series on Thursday, and the Denver Broncos are not among the host teams.

The Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars will play “home” games in London with the Titans and Bills playing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Jags playing at Wembley Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots will “host” games in Germany, with the exact stadiums still to be announced.

The Broncos are scheduled to play two of those teams — the Chiefs and Bills — on the road next season, but Denver seems unlikely to play in England or Germany next fall.

The Broncos just played the Jaguars at Wembley in 2022 — winning 21-17 — and Denver seems unlikely to immediately return to London the following season. The Broncos also seem unlikely to play in Germany in 2023 after having Mexico set as their designated international market in 2021.

Mexico will not host an international game in 2023 because Estadio Azteca is undergoing renovations, but the NFL plans to return to Mexico City in the future, perhaps as early as 2024. Denver will play at least one more international game before 2029, and Mexico is the likeliest location.

Bears could play an international game vs. Chiefs in 2023

Bears vs. Chiefs would be an appealing international matchup for the NFL in 2023.

The NFL announced the teams that will be playing international games in 2023, which includes five matchups between London and Germany.

The Bills, Titans and Jaguars will play games in London while the Chiefs and Patriots will play games in Germany. So how does this concern the Bears?

Chicago will face Kansas City in 2023 (schedule to be finalized in May). The Bears are set to face the Chiefs on the road, which means there’s a chance that game (a Kansas City home game) could be International.

It’s hard not to figure the Bears are a favorite to face the Chiefs in Germany. Ryan Poles was an executive with Kansas City before coming to Chicago. Patrick Mahomes vs. Justin Fields, two of the league’s exciting young quarterbacks. Then there’s the Matt Nagy of it all. It’s everything you could want to be featured on an international stage.

Another reason it would make sense is because the Bears are due an international game. They last faced the Raiders in London back in 2019.

Chicago has played three international games in London dating back to 1986, when they beat the Cowboys 17-6 in a preseason game at Wembley Stadium.

The Bears have played in London twice since then — back in 2011, when they beat the Buccaneers 24-18 at Wembley Stadium, and most recently in 2019, losing to the Raiders 24-21 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

NFL won’t play any international games in 2020

The NFL will play all games in the United States for the 2020 season.

The sports landscape has been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic, but the NFL has been able to carry on with business as usual during its 2020 offseason.

While the plan, at present, is for the NFL to conduct its 2020 season in full — from preseason to regular season to postseason — there will be modifications necessary to ensure the health and safety of players and those involved.

The NFL made its first major move with the announcement that all games will be played in the United States, which means that annual international games have been cancelled for the 2020 season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were scheduled for two home games at Wembley Stadium in London with the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins hosting one game at Tottenham Stadium in London. The Arizona Cardinals were set to host a game at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

This news doesn’t impact the Bears, who weren’t slated for any international games in 2020. Last season, Chicago faced the Las Vegas Raiders at Tottenham Stadium in London, a deflating 24-21 defeat in Week 5.

The NFL is expected to release the 2020 regular-season schedule as early as Thursday — no later than Saturday, May 9 — where we’ll learn exactly when the Bears will be facing their 2020 opponents, assuming the 2020 season happens.

Bears will not play Falcons in Mexico in 2020

While we won’t know the Bears schedule until mid-April, we do know that their road game against the Falcons will indeed be in Atlanta.

While we won’t know the Bears schedule until mid-April, we do know that their road game against the Falcons will indeed be in Atlanta.

The NFL announced that the Cardinals will host the league’s annual game in Mexico this season. That means the Bears won’t be traveling out of the country in 2020.

There was a possibility that the Bears’ game against the Falcons could be an option in Mexico, but it will now be played in Atlanta with the Cardinals getting the call.

The Bears will host the Texans, Colts, Saints, Giants, Buccaneers and their NFC North rivals Lions, Packers and Vikings in 2020.

Chicago will hit the road to play against the Falcons, Panthers, Jaguars, Rams, Titans, Lions, Packers and Vikings.
