All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

San Francisco (1-0) vs Philadelphia (1-0) Game Preview

Why San Francisco Will Win

Well that was freaking weird.

The 49ers had the three-foot putt made against the Lions with a big lead and everything working offensively, and then the secondary took the rest of the afternoon off in the 41-33 win.

On the plus side, Jimmy Garoppolo was solid – 314 yards with plenty of big plays and no picks – and out of a backfield with seemingly 41 injured runners, Elijah Mitchell took over with a strong 104-yard, one-score day.

How efficient was San Francisco? It only ran 55 plays – to Detroit’s 84 – and scored 41 points. While all that was happening …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Philadelphia Will Win

Philadelphia had a surprising walk in the park against Atlanta with a 32-6 road win.

Jalen Hurts was terrific – at the very least, he was steady and didn’t throw any picks – and the defense made Matt Ryan look ridiculous with constant press while not giving him anywhere to throw.

There were WAY too many penalties overall, but the D that allowed just two field goals should be able to hold down a San Francisco offense that really does have running back depth issues.

Make Jimmy Garoppolo deal with the secondary that just stuffed the Falcon receiving corps in a paper bag.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

These are professional athletes who are built to handle anything, but the 49ers had to play Week 1 in Detroit, go home, and now they have to fly across the country to play in Philadelphia. Yeah, boo hoo, it’s just a plane ride, but if you buy into the whole circadian rhythm thing, the ball get kicked off 10 am San Francisco time.

The bigger issue will be an Eagle defense that’s about to have its second straight strong performance.

Hurts will throw two picks that keep the Niners around – the San Francisco defense will generate pressure from the start – but he’ll also run well enough for the ground attack to average over five yards per carry.

Expect a good one.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Las Vegas (1-0) vs Pittsburgh (1-0) Game Preview

Why Las Vegas Will Win

Las Vegas should be 0-1, but here we are.

The team showed its resiliency in the thrilling 33-27 overtime victory over Baltimore, with Derek Carr throwing for 435 yards and the defense doing a wonderful job of slowing down everyone but Lamar Jackson.

The line generated pressure, it sped the big dashes to a minimum, and overall this was the big play performance from a team that’s supposed to be full of them.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh sputtered and coughed against Buffalo. The running game went nowhere, there were several missed opportunities, and Ben Roethlisberger looked … old.

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Pittsburgh Will Win

Pittsburgh should be 0-1, but here we are.

It was as if the Steelers fell into the 23-16 win over Buffalo.

However, for all the problems, the defense managed to do a whole lot of bending but rarely broke as the Bills came up short on drive after drive – managing just one touchdown.

It shouldn’t seem like this should matter, but that was an early game win for Pittsburgh, and the Raiders just went through a war – that was like a game-and-a-half – on Monday night.

RB Josh Jacobs is out, the team had to gut it through a whole lot of tough plays, and it’s hardly going to be fresh even though it’s only Week 2.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

This will be the Najee Harris game.

Again, Baltimore was relatively bottled up when Jackson wasn’t being Jackson, but even with it’s ragtag bunch of running backs – after all the injuries this offseason – it was still able to move relatively effectively on the ground.

Pittsburgh doesn’t have Baltimore’s offensive line, but Harris will take over for stretches as he helps the O control the game against a Raider team that will hit a wall early in the fourth.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

New Orleans (1-0) vs Carolina (1-0) Game Preview

Why New Orleans Will Win

It New Orleans can get THAT Jameis all season long …

The Saints destroyed Green Bay and made it question its place in the NFL world.

Everything clicked. The New Orleans D made Aaron Rodgers look awful – but now the flow; that’s kicking – and the O got a big day out of the ground game and five touchdown passes from Jameis Winston. The average fan can’t name a Saint receiver, but it didn’t matter. It all worked.

Yeah, Carolina got a Week 1 win and had a whole lot of positives, but … Jets. That’s still a mediocre-to-awful team it struggled against.

Zach Wilson was able to hit on a few big plays down the field and kept New York in the game, and there wasn’t any running game to help the cause. New Orleans will bring the balance, but …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Carolina Will Win

Here comes the Carolina pass rush.

The New Orleans offensive front was brilliant against Green Bay – no sacks allowed, no tackles for loss – but now it has to deal with a Carolina pass rush that was all over Wilson with six sacks, and was fantastic against the run.

The Panthers have the playmakers up front on D – Winston won’t be nearly as comfortable this week – Sam Darnold is a more-than-serviceable veteran quarterback as long as Christian McCaffrey is back to being Christian McCaffrey.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much will the New Orleans covid issues matter? Seven coaches will be in the protocol, but there doesn’t appear to be a big problem with the players.

It’s just another thing for the Saints to deal with.

A whole lot is being made of the Saints having to be road warriors after Hurricane Ida, but that also might have galvanized and sharpened up the team – at least that’s how it played against Green Bay.

Darnold will be fine, but not good enough. Put it this way; if the Saints can make Aaron Rodgers look like that …

The Saints won’t have it easy, but it’ll come up with a second straight balanced effort.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Denver (1-0) vs Jacksonville (0-1) Game Preview

Why Denver Will Win

Teddy Bridgewater is better than you think.

He’s not Patrick Mahomes, and you’re not going to win a Super Bowl if he’s your starting quarterback, but he can move an offense efficiently and effectively against the okay defenses – like the Giant D – and he was able to spread it around just fine in a 27-13 win last week.
The Denver defense did the rest, stalling the New York running game and keeping the game in check until Bridgewater and the offense could put it away.

Jacksonville is going through the process.

This is still the team that had the No. 1 overall draft pick, and it’s not going to be consistent enough on either side of the ball to pull this off at home if the Bronco defense can apply pressure and force Trevor Lawrence to make mistakes.

As long as Bridgewater and the Denver offense doesn’t turn the ball over, it’ll all be fine.

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Jacksonville Will Win

Just turn it loose.

There’s no Denver running game to worry about – there was one great run by Melvin Gordon against the Giants, and that was it – and taking an injured Jerry Jeudy away from Bridgewater matters.

Lawrence will make mistakes, but he showed against Houston the upside and potential once the game starts to slow down. Until then, he’s going to bomb away and keep pushing.

The Jaguars have the receiver weapons, and Carlos Hyde and James Robinson aren’t bad backs if they can get the ball more. The team got down so fast that the running game was abandoned – that can’t happen this week.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

It might be a home game, and Jacksonville will be stronger, but losing to the 2021 Houston Texans by 16 isn’t a sign that all is going well early on.

It won’t be a scintillating performance, but Denver will get the D working early on, the team will be +2 in turnover margin, and it’ll be a 2-0 start.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Minnesota (0-1) vs Arizona (1-0) Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Viking passing game will continue to be great.

The pass rush was fantastic in the 27-24 overtime loss to Cincinnati – generating five sacks and enough plays behind the line to matter – but the fun was through the air as Kirk Cousins put together a solid day.

He didn’t get the win, but he threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns without a pick. If KJ Osborn can keep producing – he caught seven passes for 76 yards – to go along with Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson, the Vikings will be an even bigger problem when Cousins get time.

But it’s all about whether or not that aggressive defensive front can get to …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Arizona Will Win

Kyler Murray. He was fantastic against Tennessee, and he didn’t even run all that much.

The offense roared on the road with 38 points in the first three quarters, the receiving corps was great, and the defense did the rest.

Derrick Henry was bottled up for just 58 yards, and now the Cardinals get to focus on a Dalvin Cook coming off a tough day against the Bengals. Cook kept getting the ball and he got a score, but he didn’t go anywhere.

But …

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Basically, at home, it’s Kirk Cousins or … Kyler Murray.

The Vikings have the offense to rise up and rock in a shootout, and that pass rush can turn the lights out on a drive in a hurry, but the secondary is still really, really suspect.

Minnesota worked on the defensive backs this offseason, but they’re still a problem. They gave up too many plays to Joe Burrow and Cincinnati last week, and this week it’ll be Murray who bombs away.

This is going to be fun.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Atlanta (0-1) vs Tampa Bay (1-0) Game Preview

Why Atlanta Will Win

Can the passing game get going?

Absolutely awful in the 32-6 loss to Philadelphia to start the season, the Falcons couldn’t get the O going with Matt Ryan under pressure all day and the receiving corps not helping him out. Going against the Tampa Bay defensive front isn’t a plus, but …

403 yards, three touchdowns. That’s what the Bucs gave up to Dak Prescott in their thrilling 31-29 win over Dallas. If Ryan can get time, he’s not going to be nearly that bad again.

The pieces are there to throw and keep throwing, but …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Tampa Bay Will Win

The Buccaneer defensive front is going to attack.

It did an amazing job bottling up Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas running game, and Atlanta won’t get anything out of its own ground attack.

Tom Brady obviously won’t run like Jalen Hurts, but the Atlanta secondary couldn’t come up with stops against the Eagle passing game. Now it’s going to have problems with TB12 as he’ll get plenty of time to work.

It’s not like the guy needs the extra time.

However, this might be the game to get the ground game going after it didn’t get a chance to do much of anything against the Cowboys. Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones combined for just 13 carries on Thursday night – that’s about to change.
Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Not only does Tampa Bay get a home game against a team that came up with one of the worst performances in Week 1, but it also got the extra rest for a few days.

It’ll be a more balanced effort from the Bucs, but Brady will be in control the whole way. Ryan and the Falcon offense will be better, but it won’t keep up.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Dallas (0-1) vs Los Angeles Chargers (1-0) Game Preview

Why Dallas Will Win

The running game is about to eat.

It’s all well and good that Dak Prescott was able to throw for over 400 yards in the close loss to Tampa Bay, but for this all to work the Cowboys need Ezekiel Elliott to get going.

The game against the Buccaneers got slightly out of hand shootout-wise with both teams blowing off the run, but the Chargers allowed close to five yards per carry in the 20-16 win over Washington and Zeke is more than rested though to handle the workload.

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win

Justin Herbert is about to eat … again.

Yeah, the Dallas secondary has improved and the defense – forgetting the Tampa Bay game for a moment – it’s a whole lot better than it showed against the Bucs. Even so, there wasn’t a lick of pressure on Tom Brady, and the pressure Washington generated last week to get to Herbert didn’t seem to matter.

The new coaching staff came up with ball control game plan last week – the Chargers held the ball for more than 36 minutes – and it’ll have no problems grinding this down if the Cowboys want to get the running game working.
Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

The Chargers will come through in the grand re-opener – at least for them – in their new digs with fans.

Dallas getting a few extra days off should help a bit, but this will be a totally different game than what it deals with last Thursday night. The Chargers will get a slew of field goals to nickel and dime their way to points as they eat up the clock and push through two late scoring drives to survive.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Tennessee (0-1) vs Seattle (1-0) Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

What the hell was that?

The Titans got ripped apart by the Arizona offense in the 38-13 loss. The defense couldn’t handle Kyler Murray has he spread the ball around with ease, and the offensive front got beaten up by the Cardinal pass rush.

That’s about to change, at least on the offensive side.

Derrick Henry never got into any sort of a groove, and now he’s going to get the ball early, often, and everywhere in between against a Seattle defense that was great against the run in the 28-16 win over Indianapolis, but is about to get pushed.

Taylor couldn’t shake loose, but the Colts were able to run for 113 yards and had a few good looks early on – several times, Taylor seemed just THIS close to breaking one.

Tennessee has way too many offensive stars to be so mediocre two weeks in a row, but …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Seattle Will Win

The pass defense – dealing with Russell Wilson and the Seahawks isn’t a plus if you’re having problems giving up the deep ball.

Tennessee didn’t get hit with any back-breaking home runs, but it gave up a whole slew of midrange big plays as five Cardinal passes ended up gaining more than 20 yards.

Seattle got its own ground attack going in the win over Indy, but it was Wilson’s deep plays – he averaged 11 yards per pass – to go along with the great game from the refurbished D that got the win.

As long as Seattle doesn’t turn the ball over in bunches – it was a disaster last year when giving it away two times or more – it’ll be fine.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee will be a whole lot better, sharper, and stronger with the ground game.

Ryan Tannehill didn’t seem like he had the timing down with Julio Jones and the receivers, but he’s going to make up for it with a better performance. Henry will barrel as he sets the tone for the game, and …

Russell will go Russell. He’ll hit the big deep shots Tennessee won’t.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Kansas City (1-0) vs Baltimore (0-1) Game Preview

Why Kansas City Will Win

How gassed are the Ravens?

That 33-27 loss to Baltimore was about as emotional and tough as a regular season game gets, and now it gets a short week to try gearing it back up.

The defense couldn’t hold on against Derek Carr and the Raider passing game late, and it got hit for just enough tough rushing yards to matter. Now the group gets to deal with the Kansas City attack that took a while to get going, and then went off in the fun win over Cleveland.

The defensive front got to Baker Mayfield when it absolutely had to, Patrick Mahomes went Patrick Mahomes when he absolutely had to, and as long as the lines can hold up, everything should work because …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Baltimore Will Win

The Ravens are going to run and run some more. That’s what they do.

Cleveland runs, too, and it managed to grind out 153 yards and close to six yards per carry against the Kansas City defensive front. It won’t matter if it’s Latavius Murray, or Ty’Son Williams, or if it’s Lamar taking off, the Ravens are going to push past 175 yards on the ground.

Time of possession means nothing when the other side has THAT arsenal of offensive weapons, but you still have to do things the way you’re supposed to and hope it works.

Control the clock, keep the defense as rested as possible, and then survive the micro-bursts of Chief points.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

No pressure or anything, but could these two possibly play a game that’s anywhere near as much fun as what they respectively came up with last weekend?

Yeah, maybe.

You know how this works.

Kansas City will get down early, the Baltimore defense will take over, Lamar Jackson will do a few sensational things, and then … boom, boom, boom.

The Chiefs warm up, Mahomes comes up with a few huge downfield plays to take the lead, and then they hang on for dear life as Jackson gets one final shot to pull it off.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Detroit (0-1) vs Green Bay (0-1) Game Preview

Why Detroit Will Win

The passing game should work.

Detroit isn’t good, and it’s going to get down time and again, but as it showed last week in the 41-33 loss to San Francisco, the parts are there to keep bombing away and make things interesting.

Jared Goff might have been dogged as a Ram, but the guy can throw – he hit the 49ers for 338 yards and three scores.

Green Bay is much, much better than it looked and played in the disaster against New Orleans, but the secondary couldn’t handle Jameis Winson and the mediocre receiving corps.

The Lions will put up offensive stats, but …

Week 2 NFL Schedule, Predictions

Why Green Bay Will Win

The Lion defense is going to be a work in progress all season long.

Jimmy Garoppolo had time to throw and he bombed away for over 300 yards, the San Francisco running game came up with 131 yards and 4.7 yards per carry, and there weren’t any problems until the team shut it down too early.

That’s not going to be a problem this week.

After the clunker against the Saints, this is one of those season-on-the-line games even though it’s only Week 2. After all the turmoil and issues, there can’t be a dysfunctional loss to a team as mediocre as the Lions.

Aaron Rodgers will get time, the running game should find plenty of room early on, and the offense will do what is’t supposed to.

Week 2 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Detroit will put up plenty of late yards for the second week in a row, and once again it’s not going to matter all that much.

Here comes the Green Bay adjustment – at least for its sake, it had better be on the way.

As the man once put it, R-E-L-A-X.

Rodgers will be great, the defense will clamp down in the first half and be all over the Lion running game, and Rodgers will be the star of the show – just like he’s supposed to be.
