2020 NFL draft order: Broncos would have 5th pick if season ended today

If the season ended today, the Broncos would be scheduled to select fifth overall in the 2020 NFL draft.

If the season ended today, the Denver Broncos would be scheduled to select fifth overall in the 2020 NFL draft, the same spot the team drafted last year. In 2019, Denver selected N.C. State edge defender Bradley Chubb with the fifth overall pick. Chubb went on to earn Pro Bowl alternate honors as a rookie after totaling 60 tackles and 12 sacks.

Here’s a look at the current order of the top-10 selections for next year’s draft, according to Tankathon.com:

  1. Cincinnati Bengals (0-11)
  2. New York Giants (2-9)
  3. Miami Dolphins (2-9)
  4. Washington Redskins (2-9)
  5. Denver Broncos (3-8)
  6. Atlanta Falcons (3-8)
  7. Detroit Lions (3-7-1)
  8. Arizona Cardinals (3-7-1)
  9. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-7)
  10. New York Jets (4-7)

The list of top prospects expected to be available in the 2020 NFL draft includes Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas, Alabama wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and Ohio State edge defender Chase Young.

The list of quarterbacks entering the draft is expected to include Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Oregon’s Justin Herbert, Georgia’s Jake Fromm and LSU’s Joe Burrow. Denver selected Missouri QB Drew Lock in the second round of April’s draft but he is yet to play this season.

Next year’s draft will take place from April 23-25 in Las Vegas.

2020 NFL Draft: Lions now hold the No. 7 pick

Detroit’s poor strength of schedule wins the tiebreaker with Arizona

A tumultuous Sunday in Week 12 shifted around some of the top 10 in the current 2020 NFL Draft order. The Detroit Lions thrust themselves upward with an ugly, unpleasant 19-16 loss to the Washington Redskins.

The loss moved the Lions into the No. 7 overall spot. They are tied with the team they tied, Arizona, with matching 3-7-1 records, but the Lions have lost to a lesser strength of schedule.

Washington’s unexpected win moved them down from No. 2 to No. 4 and might have cost them a chance at Ohio State EDGE Chase Young. The winless Cincinnati Bengals now hold a 2-game lead for the No. 1 overall pick, presumptively LSU quarterback Joe Burrow.

The Lions sit in the middle of a tight pack of eight teams with seven and eight losses. They play the 8-loss Broncos, current holders of the No. 5 pick, in Week 16.

Bengals still slotted for first overall pick despite competition from Redskins

The Bengals remain ahead of the Redskins in 2020 NFL draft order.

The Cincinnati Bengals remain in the hunt for the 2020 NFL draft’s top overall pick, though the Washington Redskins continue to make it interesting.

Thanks to a loss in Oakland — matching Dave Shula’s franchise-worst start — the Bengals sit at 0-10 as the only winless team in the NFL. That keeps them in the first slot of the current draft order

But there is Washington right behind. Those Redskins are 1-9, the only win of the season coming against Miami. Otherwise, they have lost four in a row.

Washington perhaps out-tanking the Bengals might not be the end of the world. A lot can change between now and the draft obviously, but the Redskins drafted a first-round passer last year with Dwayne Haskins. If the Bengals are after a quarterback, the Redskins might not be a threat anyway.

With games against Miami, Cleveland and the Jets still on the schedule, the Bengals could easily win enough to move out of the first slot. But understandably, 0-16 is starting to become a question Zac Taylor hears often.

Lions move up to No. 10 in the 2020 NFL Draft order with 3rd straight loss

The Detroit Lions moved into the top 10 in the 2020 NFL Draft order with their sixth loss in seven games

Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys was the third in a row for the Detroit Lions. The defeat dropped Detroit to 3-6-1, but it did move the team up in the 2020 NFL Draft order.

The loss moved the Lions into the No. 10 overall spot. Cleveland’s win on Thursday night pushed the Browns to 4-6 and a better record than the Lions, who sat at No. 11 entering Week 11.

This week’s Lions opponent, the Washington Redskins, currently sits at No. 2 overall with their 1-9 record. There are five other teams with three wins, including the 3-7-1 Arizona Cardinals. Based on strength of schedule, the Lions would win the tiebreaker with the Cardinals (whom they tied) and get the higher draft pick if they both wind up with the same record.

Falcons drop to pick No. 6 in updated 2020 NFL Draft order

The Falcons delivered a satisfying win over the Saints on Sunday after an extremely disappointing first eight weeks of the season. However, fans had already begun to shift their focus to the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Falcons delivered a satisfying win over the Saints on Sunday after an extremely disappointing first eight weeks of the season. However, fans had already begun to shift their focus to the 2020 NFL Draft.

Atlanta’s Week 10 victory won’t change that, although it was a reminder that this team may not be bad enough to get that top-five pick fans were holding out hope for.

According to Draft Wire’s updated 2020 draft order, the Falcons’ win over New Orleans dropped them to pick No. 6.

That probably won’t be high enough to land someone like Ohio State’s Chase Young, but they could still wind up with a top prospect such as Iowa DE A.J. Epenesa, LB Isaiah Simmons, or one of several defensive backs.

Atlanta faces its second of five straight NFC South matchups this weekend when the team takes on the Carolina Panthers.

Tank watch: Bengals get big breathing room in draft order as bad teams win

The Bengals are winning in the NFL draft order, at least.

The Cincinnati Bengals suffered one of their worst losses in franchise history against the Baltimore Ravens over the weekend.

But the team sure keeps winning in the draft order race.

Week 10 was quite fruitful in this pursuit. The Miami Dolphins picked up another win, this time over Indianapolis to make it two wins on the season.

Ditto for the New York Jets with a win over the New York Giants, as well as Atlanta upsetting New Orleans.

Those big winners of the weekend join the four teams sitting at two wins. Five more have three wins. Just one — the Washington Redskins — have a single win.

And then there are the 0-9 Bengals.

The Bengals stand alone atop the draft order and haven’t shown much in the way of progress on the field by comparison, to the point it’s fair to wonder if a coach could get fired.

With the way things have gone, it sure seems like the Bengals could keep a tight grip on the first pick without much of a problem. It’s hard to fathom 0-16, but one look at the remaining schedule doesn’t produce any guaranteed wins.

If nothing else, onlookers can take solace in the fact the top pick should mean the arrival of a new era at quarterback.
