Cardinals’ 5-player core ranked last in NFL

Should anyone be surprised with how the offseason of the Cardinals has been perceived?

This is an offseason of dumping on the Arizona Cardinals. Yes, they have stripped down the roster. They have a new head coach and general manager. Quarterback Kyler Murray is recovering from a torn ACL. They released receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

They have the lowest projected win total in the league for 2023 and regularly come in last in offseason power rankings.

So it should be no surprise that they are at the bottom of another ranking.

The latest is from ESPN. Seth Waldner took the top five-player course from each team and then ranked the teams. Of course, the Cardinals are dead last.

The five-player core is QB Kyler Murray, S Budda Baker, WR Marquise Brown, OL D.J. Humphries and OL Paris Johnson, the Cardinals’ top draft pick this year.

We’re including Murray in the core even though we’re also working under the assumption that he will miss most of the 2023 season due a torn ACL in his right knee. That Johnson and Humphries made this list speaks to the lack of roster strength on this rebuilding team.

We again see the assumption that Murray will miss “most of the 2023 season,” which is an interesting assumption.

But having two tackles in the core is evident of a lack of playmaking talent on the roster.

Linebackers Isaiah Simmons and Zaven Collins or pass rusher Cam Thomas hopefully can earn a spot in this core. That would improve their ranking for sure.

Cardinals re-sign LB Zeke Turner for one more season

Turner, who made the team as an undrafted rookie in 2018, returns for a sixth season as a stud special teams player.

The Arizona Cardinals have made another move in free agency, bringing back a player who has been with the team several seasons.

The team announced the return of linebacker and special teams ace Zeke Turner. The Cardinals re-signed him to a one-year contract.

Turner entered the league in 2018 as an undrafted rookie and has stood out on special teams ever since.

Since joining the Cardinals, he has 51 career special teams tackles, two blocked punts and caught a pass on a fake punt.

He also played a little on defense last season.

His return makes sense with the return of special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Jeff Rodgers.

He gives Arizona depth at linebacker and a core special teamer.

DL Zach Allen heading to Broncos on 3-year deal

The former third-round pick had his best season in 2022 for the Cardinals. He gets a three-year, $45.75 million contract.

The Arizona Cardinals are losing one of their top free agents. Defensive lineman Zach Allen has agreed to a three-year contract with the Denver Broncos, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

He will be reunited with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who was Allen’s DC with the Cardinals all four years of his career.

The deal is reportedly worth $45.75 million and includes $32.5 million guaranteed at signing.

Allen was a third-round pick in 2019 and steadily improved each season with Arizona.

Last season was his best year. In 13 games, he had 47 tackles and set career highs with 5.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 20 quarterback hits and eight passes batted down.

The Cardinals now have lost their two most productive defensive linemen from last season. He and J.J. Watt, who has retired, combined for 18 sacks.
