Eagles win over Dolphins puts pressure on 49ers to keep pace in NFC

With Philadelphia’s win over the Dolphins, the #49ers are now looking up at the Eagles in the NFC standings heading into Monday night.

The 49ers now have a little work to do when they visit the Vikings on Monday night. The Philadelphia Eagles’ 31-17 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday Night Football put the pressure on San Francisco to keep pace in the race for the NFC’s No. 1 seed.

With their victory Philadelphia became the first NFC team to reach the 6-1 mark. The 49ers are 5-1 ahead of their Monday night game vs. the Vikings. The Lions entered Week 7 at 5-1, but lost 38-6 in Baltimore on Sunday to fall to 5-2.

For San Francisco their margin for error is nil. Philadelphia appears to be rolling now after their over Miami on Sunday night, so falling a game behind them would make the climb back to the top seed even more difficult.

Overall Sunday wasn’t bad for the 49ers. The Lions loss was key to move one team back in the hunt for the NFC crown, and the Rams loss to the Steelers put them effectively out of the division race. Seattle won to keep pace in the NFC West though and the Eagles’ victory has them looking like the class of the conference again.

San Francisco can soften the blows of Philadelphia and Seattle winning by taking care of business in Minnesota, but the pressure is certainly ratcheted up now following Sunday’s action.

1 of 2 teams tied with 49ers atop NFC loses early in Week 7

Some good early news for the #49ers among the Week 7 scores.

Week 7’s early slate featured a key game for the 49ers. The Detroit Lions, one of the two teams tied with the 49ers atop the NFC,  were in Baltimore to take on the Ravens.

The Lions entered Week 7 on a four-game win streak that pulled them even with the 49ers and Eagles after both of those clubs lost in Week 6. Detroit didn’t extend its streak to five wins and got thumped 38-6 by the Ravens.

Baltimore jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead an dnever looked back. QB Lamar Jackson looked like his MVP self with 357 passing yards and three touchdown passes while completing 21-of-27 attempts. Jackson also rushed for 36 yards and a touchdown.

A Lions loss was one of four things the 49ers wanted to see Sunday while they’re awaiting their Monday night game. It was the only game of the four in the morning slate.

Given what’s at stake though a Detroit loss was one of the two most important outcomes for San Francisco. That pushes them down in the hunt for the No. 1 seed int he NFC. An Eagles loss to the Dolphins on Sunday Night Football would also be a key outcome for the 49ers.

The Seahawks lost a close game against the Bengals on Sunday. Fortunately, it only cost them one spot in the NFC playoff race, dropping them from being in line for the fifth seed to the sixth.

NFC standings: 49ers still No. 1 despite Week 6 loss

There’s a 3-way tie atop the NFC standings, but the #49ers still sit at No.1.

The 49ers suffered their first defeat of the year in Week 6, but they didn’t lose their spot atop the NFC standings thanks to the New York Jets. Robert Saleh’s Jets squad knocked off the Eagles 20-14 and removed Philadelphia from the undefeated ranks shortly after the Browns handed San Francisco its first loss of the year.

Losses by the 49ers and Eagles, combined with the Lions’ fourth consecutive victory, leaves three 5-1 teams in the NFC through six weeks.

Here’s what the standings look like one third of the way through the year:

The Lions sit at the No. 3 spot because of their conference record. They lost to the Seahawks in Week 2 while the 49ers and Eagles both suffered losses vs. AFC clubs in Week 6.

San Francisco edges out Philly for the top spot thanks to their strength of schedule. 49ers opponents have a combined winning percentage of .441, while Eagles opponents sit with a .429 combined winning percentage.

With no head-to-head matchup yet, no difference in common opponents and identical division records, the tiebreaker would move to strength of victory, which is the combined winning percentage of the teams the 49ers and Eagles have beaten. Since they both have .414 strength of victories, the tiebreak moves on to strength of schedule where the 49ers have a superior mark through six weeks.

This could be a fascinating race down the stretch. Detroit is very good and certainly capable of stealing the No. 1 seed in what appeared before the season to be a two-team race. They won’t face the 49ers or Eagles though, so the tiebreakers could get messy. San Francisco and Philadelphia square off in Week 13 in what could ostensibly become an elimination game in the hunt for the No. 1 seed.

The Chiefs enter this clash having secured a key division win their last time out. They throttled the Oakland Raiders, 40-9, to give themselves some breathing room atop the AFC West. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense only managed 259 total yards for the game, but their defense forced three turnovers that put the Chiefs in easy scoring positions throughout the game. Against the Patriots, turnovers may not come as easily and Mahomes will need to be much sharper.

New England suffered its second loss of the season last week, falling 28-22 to the Houston Texans. The Patriots allowed DeShaun Watson to throw for three touchdown passes, as the Texans went ahead 28-9 in the game and were able to coast the rest of the way to victory. The Patriots have struggled against Lamar Jackson and Watson this season, both dual-threat quarterbacks, and will need to tighten up their defense against a third mobile quarterback in Mahomes if they want to avoid another defeat.

The 49ers lone loss of the season came against Seattle in an overtime thriller. This back half of their schedule doesn’t get any easier. After a 37-8 victory at home against Green Bay, they head on the road to face Baltimore and New Orleans. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 14 of 20 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and company were ecstatic to have tight end George Kittle back after missing two games with an injury. Kittle, one of the best tight ends in the NFL, gave an instant boost to the offense with six catches for 129 yards and one touchdown.

The old adage that defense wins championships may be the 49ers ticket to the Super Bowl. This unit is holding opponents to an average of 248.0 YPG and opposing quarterbacks to an average of 136.9 YPG. Ferocious. That’s how the defense played against a quality Packers team and a future HOF quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers had just 104 yards and one touchdown, one of the least productive games in his career. Fred Warner had 11 tackles and one sack, while Arik Armstead and Nick Bosa combined for eight tackles and three sacks. The defense has faced dual threat quarterbacks like Kyler Murray (twice) and Russell Wilson, but will it have an answer for Lamar Jackson? Containing him is the key to this game.

Jackson is quickly making a case for MVP honors and he displayed his highlight laden talents for all to see on Monday Night Football. Baltimore scored six touchdowns on its first six possessions as the Ravens dismantled the Rams 45-6 on the road. Jackson was 15 of 20 for 169 passing yards with five touchdowns and 95 yards rushing. This season he has a total of 3,303 yards of offense and 24 touchdowns. Mark Ingram Jr. has also been an integral part of the run game. The bruiser picked up his fourth 100+ yard rushing total in the win. Marquise Brown and Willie Snead were both on the receiving end of two touchdown passes on Sunday. This offense is ranked second in the league with an average of 433.3 YPG and is by far the best when it comes to the run. Baltimore is the only team with an average of over 200 YPG (210.5). Behind them is the 49ers (145.6 YPG).

While the offense dominated the time of possession, the defense has played well all season.  This unit is currently ranked third in rushing defense (87.7) and showed that against the Rams, as their rushing game picked up a mere 22 yards on the ground. San Francisco doesn’t have any superstars on offense but have a balanced attack that will keep Baltimore on its toes.

Prediction: With the high flying attack of Lamar and company our analyst Ryan Brandenburger is taking the Ravens to cover the 5.5 points in a shootout with two of the NFL’s heavyweights. Score: Ravens 35-24

49ers stay ahead in NFC playoff race

The 49ers got a huge win in their race for a first-round bye.

The 49ers’ Week 11 showdown with the Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium was massive for the home team. Arizona entered at 3-6-1, firmly out of the NFC playoff race, but San Francisco desperately needed the win.

Had they lost, they would’ve dropped from the top seed in the NFC to the No. 5 seed, with the idle Seattle Seahawks leapfrogging them for the top spot in the NFC West. They pulled out a 36-26 win though, and kept themselves a full game ahead of the three teams immediately behind them in the playoff hunt.

Here’s what the NFC playoff picture looks like following Sunday’s action:

3. Saints (8-2)
4. Cowboys (6-4)
5. Seahawks (8-2)
6. Vikings (8-3)

Barring a dramatic turn, these are likely the six teams that’ll be playing in December, but the order could change. Dallas is also just a game up on the 5-5 Eagles in the NFC East, so that No. 4 seed could get a shake up too.

What matters most for the 49ers though was their come-from-behind victory Sunday afternoon.  A loss would’ve put them in a very difficult spot at 8-2, with the No. 5 seed, and going into a stretch where they face the Packers, Ravens and Saints in consecutive weeks. Having the full game of cushion gives them an opportunity to create separation over these next three weeks. It also allows them to stumble against one of the top teams without completely sinking their season.

Sunday’s win wasn’t easy for San Francisco, but it was huge in their chase for a playoff spot and first-round bye.
