Washington wide receiver DeAndre Carter won a roster in training camp for his ability to return kicks and punts. In Sunday’s Week 5 win over the Atlanta Falcons, Carter justified that roster spot with a 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half.

On Wednesday, Carter was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance last week.

In the win, Carter returned three kicks for 152 yards, averaging 50 yards per return. Due to the injuries at wide receiver, Carter also played some offense and made a critical 24-yard reception in the fourth quarter.

Carter’s story is one of perseverance. An undrafted free agent out of Sacramento State in 2015, Carter is playing for his eighth NFL organization in 2021.

Washington has been in dire need of consistency in the return game for years. Carter didn’t break a return until Sunday but has been close all season. One area where Washington likes Carter is his decisiveness as a returner. He sees a lane and goes. There is no stopping and going sideline to sideline. Carter catches the football and goes upfield.

Congratulations to Carter for this accomplishment.

Packers K Mason Crosby named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Crosby was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2021 NFL season.

A perfect night kicking field goals and extra points – including the game-winning field goal as time expired – helped Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby earn a weekly award from the NFL.

Crosby was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2021 NFL season.

Crosby made all six of his kicks in the Packers’ 30-28 win over the San Francisco 49ers, including a 54-yarder to open the scoring and a 51-yarder to win the game. He was also 3-for-3 on extra points.

This is the eighth time Crosby has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, and the first time since Week 6 of 2018.

Crosby hasn’t missed a field goal in 22 tries.

Through three games in 2021, Crosby is 4-for-4 on field goals and 8-for-8 on extra points. He was a perfect 16-for-16 on field goals last season.

According to the NFL, Crosby tied Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre for the most Player of the Week awards in Packers history.

The other Players of the Week in the NFC for Week 3 were Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and Cardinals cornerback Byron Murphy.

Tress Way named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for game vs. 49ers

Washington punter Tress Way was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this year after game vs. 49ers.

For the second time this season, Washington’s Pro-Bowl punter Tress Way is earning national honors for his performance on a Sunday, grabbing the title of NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

In Washington’s 23-15 win over the 49ers, Way was incredibly busy thanks to an offense that proved unable to move the ball very well. He punted a total of 8 times in the game, with an average of 49.8 yards and a long of 58 yards. One of his punts was downed inside the 20-yard line.

Way earned some credit from head coach Ron Rivera after the game for how well he was able to constantly flip the field for the defense, and he once again proved to be one of the more valuable players on Washington’s roster.

Bears K Cairo Santos named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Cairo Santos was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his perfect performance against the Panthers.

There’s been plenty to love about the Chicago Bears’ 5-1 start this season. And one of the pleasant surprises has been at kicker, a position that’s snakebitten the Bears in years past.

Bears kicker Cairo Santos has been dubbed the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week following his impressive Week 6 performance against the Carolina Panthers — a 23-16 victory for Chicago.

Santos was perfect in field goals, connecting on all three from distances of 31, 55 and 31 yards, all of which helped the Bears maintain a lead throughout the game.

But it was his 55-yarder — a career long — that was his biggest kick of the day. He drilled it right down the middle with :02 left in the first half to extend Chicago’s lead 13-6 heading into halftime.

The Bears signed Santos back on Aug. 25, and he’s started for them in each of the first six games this season. He’s connected on 10-of-12 field goals (83.3 percent) this season, and he’s made his last seven field goals in a row.

With Eddy Pineiro on injured reserve with a groin injury, it’s hard to believe the Bears will shy away from Santos following his impressive performance, especially over these last couple of games.

You never like to see a player lose a job to injury. But Santos has more than earned the starting role at this point.
