It’s time to admit a weird truth: The Kansas City Chiefs are a defensive football team. It’s weird because they have been synonymous with high-powered offense during the Andy Reid era, and especially during the Patrick Mahomes era. A nine-game sample size is enough proof, however, to safely say that K.C.’s strongest unit is its defense, and it isn’t particularly close.

The Chiefs got back into the win column on Sunday with a big win over the Dolphins on Sunday. K.C.’s offense found the endzone twice in the first half and the defense added a touchdown to create a 21-0 halftime lead. The second half was a bit of a different story as the Chiefs’ offense went ice-cold and didn’t score another point.

The defense began to tire out as the Dolphins found some momentum, but it buckled down on the final drive and secured the victory. K.C.’s defense held Miami’s explosive offense to 14 points and Tua Tagovailoa to under 200 passing yards. Former Chief Tyreek Hill was held in check with under eight yards per catch and no touchdowns.

Between coming off an ugly loss to the Broncos and standing pat at the trade deadline, it’s been a bit of a dramatic week for Kansas City. However, a big bounce-back win over a good Dolphins team will cure a lot of emotions. The Chiefs have to find a way to get into the endzone on a more consistent basis, and the wide receiving corps has to tighten up the mistakes.

A win over the Dolphins would put Kansas City a game ahead of them and give it the all-important tiebreaker for playoff seeding. It will be strength versus strength when the Miami offense faces off against the Chiefs’ defense.
