Rangers at Jets picks and predictions

Prediction

Jets 4, Rangers 2

Moneyline

WINNIPEG (-125) is a strong play as the Jets will get to build on the momentum of hiring a new coach and instilling a new culture vs. New York’s backup goalie. The Jets’ last 3 losses against the Rangers have all been vs. Shesterkin.

Puck line/Against the spread

WINNIPEG -1.5 (+180) is good value at plus money considering the Jets should be extra aggressive with a new coach in their home opener vs. a team that has had their number. The Jets should be able to take advantage of New York rolling out their backup goalie and playing their 3rd road game in 4 nights.

Over/Under

PASS.

Too many conflicting trends here for me to confidently bet the total. Most New York Under trends don’t apply considering Shesterkin is not in net and Winnipeg’s Over trends may not continue under the new coach. I’m staying away.

New York Rangers at Winnipeg Jets odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s New York Rangers at Winnipeg Jets odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

New York is on a two-game win streak after victories over the St. Louis Blues (5-3 Wednesday) and New Jersey Devils (3-1 Friday). Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rangers +100 (bet $100 to win $100) | Jets -120 (bet $120 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Rangers +1.5 (-290) | Jets -1.5 (+200)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -122 | U: -102)

Rangers at Jets projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (27-6-3, 1.96 GAA, .940 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Connor Hellebuyck (18-19-9, 2.92 GAA, .911 SV%, 3 SO)

Shesterkin is having an incredible season as he leads the league in both GAA and SV%. The third-year netminder has only allowed more than 2 goals once across his last nine starts and has actually held opponents to just 1 tally five times across that span.

Hellebuyck has carried one of the heaviest workloads in the league this season, but it hasn’t translated to success as he’s posted the worst numbers of his last few seasons. The veteran goalie has been tagged for 3 goals or more in six of his last seven games and has given up 4 or more in three straight.

Rangers at Jets odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 3, Jets 1

Money line

Having an opportunity to take a team that is playing terrific hockey and backed by a Vezina Trophy-calibre goaltender at plus money is too good to pass up.

The Rangers have a major special teams advantage that features their fifth-ranked power play (25.2%) against a lacking Jets’ penalty kill (21st, 77.3%) and also have a huge advantage between the pipes if Shesterkin gets the nod.

Back RANGERS (+100) to pull out a victory on the road.

Against the spread

With the Rangers showing as an underdog, they’re getting the puck and a half of insurance, there’s simply no value in taking that with a -290 tag — just take the Rangers outright if you like them to win.

There may be some value in an Alternate Spread Rangers -1.5 (+235) if you think the visitors can get to Hellebucyk, but the safest move here may be to PASS.

Over/Under

This is a difficult match to make sense of the total.

Shesterkin has the ability to stop this from hitting the Over all on his own if he continues with his incredible play. Hellebuyck has the ability to put the Under in jeopardy all on his own if he continues to be susceptible to giving up goals in bunches. AVOID.
