Mavericks’ Tim Hardaway Jr. is now among NBA’s elite spot-up shooters

Dallas Mavericks veteran wing Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 31 points during a huge victory over the conference rival Houston Rockets on Sunday.

Dallas Mavericks veteran wing Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 31 points during a huge victory over the conference rival Houston Rockets on Sunday.

After joining the team last season as part of the trade that sent star big man Kristaps Porzingis from the New York Knicks to the Mavericks, Hardaway was sidelined for the final 11 games of the 2018-19 season due to injury that required surgery. But after his recent hot streak, the wing has been named to the starting lineup for Dallas.

This is especially good news because Hardaway has been very impactful when on the court with Luka Doncic so far this season.

The former University of Michigan star has connected on 23 three-pointers during the 206 minutes he has played with the 2018-19 Rookie of the Year, including 16 long-rate shots assisted by Doncic. In fact, nearly half of the three’s Hardaway has made this year have been assisted by the 20-year-old Slovenian superstar.

Dallas has outscored opponents by a ridiculously dominant 25.9 points per 100 possessions during those minutes, the best net rating in the league (!) among all two-man lineups that have played at least 150 minutes together.

During their victory over the Rockets, Hardaway made his presence known as a spot-up threat from downtown. Considering the amount of attention that defenses must provide on Doncic, it has been important for the wing to find a niche on the perimeter and fire off the catch from his star teammate.

Hardaway is averaging 1.46 points per possession on spot-up attempts, per Synergy, which currently ranks in the 97th percentile. There are currently 140 players who have had 35 possessions as a spot-up shooter but none have been more efficient than Hardaway has been thus far.

Meanwhile, the Dallas wing is producing 5.3 points per game as a spot-up shooter. That trails only five players in the NBA, though all of them have had more possessions finished on offense.

Considering that Hardaway has only started 3 of 16 games for the Mavericks, we determined what his production would likely resemble if he were to play first-unit minutes.

Based on these calculations, only San Antonio Spurs guard Bryn Forbes has been more productive as a spot-up shooter in 2019-20.

This is an especially notable improvement for him considering last season, among the 61 players who had as many opportunities shooting off the catch, only two had a worse three-point percentage than Hardaway.

Moving forward if the Mavericks continue to be in playoff contention, they will need Hardaway to keep up his hot hand from the three-point line. But with the remarkable success of Doncic and how much attention he draws from his defenders, that is far from out of the question.

How Kenny Atkinson would game plan vs. Spencer Dinwiddie right now

Spencer Dinwiddie has been on a tear with Kyrie Irving sidelined, forcing teams to adjust and guard him in ways they haven’t before.

Spencer Dinwiddie has responded to Kyrie Irving’s extended absence due to a right shoulder impingement by playing some of the best basketball of his NBA career.

On Sunday, Dinwiddie scored the most points he ever has against the New York Knicks, finishing with 30 points in the 103-101 win. The performance also extended his streak of 20-plus point games to five, which is the longest stretch of his playing career.

Dinwiddie has been Brooklyn’s best player since Irving went down, there are no two ways about it. And it hasn’t mattered how teams approach the point guard, he continues to be someone the Nets can rely on.

The Knicks approached Dinwiddie the same way Kenny Atkinson would’ve. He told reporters the fact Dinwiddie was still able to succeed despite New York’s game plan speaks volumes about the way he’s playing right now:

Difference maker, right now. Again, they were double-teaming him all night. Credit to [the Knicks], I would’ve done the same thing. And he did a good job of getting it out and then exploiting the mismatch. What he’s also doing, he’s doing it on both ends. He’s doing it on the defensive end. He’s playing really good basketball.

Nets get back to .500 with 103-101 win over Knicks

The Knicks gave the Nets a run for their money, but Spencer Dinwiddie and company led Brooklyn to another win on Sunday.

For the first time since the Nets won their second game of the 2019-20 season, Brooklyn is back at .500. Oddly enough, the Nets improved to 8-8 by knocking off the same team on Sunday they also beat back on October 25 to get to 1-1: the New York Knicks.

The margin of victory was a bit tighter on Sunday thanks to some clutch plays from the Knicks down the stretch, but the Nets still hung on to win 103-101. Brooklyn has now won each of its last four matchups against New York. All-time, the Nets are 98-99 against the Knicks.

Spencer Dinwiddie continues to be Brooklyn’s most reliable scorer with Kyrie Irving out. He dropped 30 points on the Knicks, going 13-for-14 from the free-throw line.

Dinwiddie has now scored 20-plus points in each of the five games Irving has been absent. He’s currently in the midst of the longest streak of 20-plus point games in his career.

Additionally, Dinwiddie’s 30 points against the Knicks is a career-high against New York.

Taurean Prince led the Nets with 11 rebounds while scoring 14 points, logging his fourth double-double for the Nets. He only had five double-doubles in his career before joining Brooklyn. Prince also led the Nets with five assists.

Jarrett Allen scored 18 and grabbed 10 rebounds. He leads the Nets with six double-doubles this season.

Garrett Temple scored all 12 of his points from behind the arc, going 4-for-8 from deep.

Joe Harris scored 13 and finished 3-for-8 from three, but his best moment of the win may have been on the game’s final play — which Dinwiddie drew up in the huddle with 0.4 seconds left on the clock:

Richard Jefferson elected to retire rather than play for Knicks

Former Nets standout Richard Jefferson didn’t hold back with his criticism of the New York Knicks when they hosted Brooklyn on Saturday.

The New York Knicks have been living off past success for years, yet they’ve remained a major brand in the game because they were New York’s only basketball team.

They’ve received criticism, but the conversation has changed a bit since Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant decided to play for the Brooklyn Nets over the Knicks this past summer. Now it seems everyone is more than happy to join in and criticize James Dolan and his franchise.

Add former Nets forward and YES Network analyst Richard Jefferson to the list of individuals who don’t have a high opinion of the Knicks. During Sunday’s matchup between the Nets and Knicks at Madison Square Garden, Jefferson mentioned the Knicks offered him a contract at the end of his career.

Jefferson felt New York’s interest was a sign he needed to retire:

I refused to play for the Knicks. Like, Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin, they don’t really care. Me, I was the one person that said, ‘Knicks? No, I’ll retire.’ That’s why I retired, they were the one team that offered me a job and I decided to retire. … It’s true, I decied to retire instead of play for the Knicks. … I just knew it was time. When the Knicks were looking for me to play for them, I knew my time in this league was over.

Richard Jefferson absolutely burned the Knicks with a story about his retirement

“I decided to retire instead of playing for the Knicks.”

Richard Jefferson played 17 seasons in the NBA and called it a career back in 2018. But it turned out that the 39-year-old did have the option to extend his NBA career. According to him, it just would have meant that he’d have to play for the Knicks.

Any guesses how that turned out?

Jefferson joined the crew for the YES Network broadcast of Nets-Knicks on Sunday, and he straight-up said that he refused to play for the Knicks.

According to Jefferson, the Knicks were the only team to come calling after his 20-game stint in Denver. Faced with the dreaded reality of playing basketball for the New York Knicks or retire, Jefferson said that he knew his playing days were over. He opted to retire instead.

Jefferson said:

“I refused to play for the Knicks. Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin — they don’t really care. Me — I was the one person that said, ‘Knicks? No. I’ll retire.’ That’s why I retired. They were the one team that offered me a job, and I decided to retire. It’s true. I decided to retire instead of playing for the Knicks. … I just knew it was time. When the Knicks were looking for me to play for them, I knew my time in this league was over.”

Ouch, Richard. After all, Jefferson does know how to kick the Knicks when they’re down.

As awesome as that story is — and trust me, it is great — it shows where the Knicks stand with NBA players today. They went into last offseason hoping to sign Kevin Durant, and they couldn’t even sign an admittedly washed Richard Jefferson. He quite literally wouldn’t take Jim Dolan’s money to be a Knick.

Prediction

Nets 107, Knicks 96

Moneyline (ML)

The NETS (-139) have enough firepower to easily get past the rival Knicks, even without Irving. The Knicks won’t have much of a home-court advantage and they enter Sunday off of a 111-104 loss to the San Antonio Spurs Saturday at MSG. The Nets haven’t played since winning 116-97 over the Sacramento Kings on Friday.

Brooklyn is 2-5 on the road while New York is 3-5 at home. The Nets won 113-109 in the first meeting between the two this season in Brooklyn. Irving led the way with 26 points and five assists, but four other players scored in double figures for the Nets.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Brooklyn to win outright fetches a profit of $7.20.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Get slightly better value with the NETS (-1.5, -121) on the spread. They’ll need to win by just two or more points, as they did in late October and in all seven of their victories on the season.

Brooklyn is 7-8 overall ATS and 3-4 ATS on the road. New York is 8-8 overall but just 3-5 at MSG. Only one of the Knicks’ losses this season was by a single point.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 213.5 (-106) as this game is missing the best player for either side in Irving. The Knicks are second-to-last in the league with an Over percentage of just 31.2. They’ve gone 5-11 against the projected totals and fall an average of 3.4 points shy of the number.

The Nets are 7-8 against the O/U but top the projection by 2.4 points on average. Brooklyn will pull away in the fourth quarter against the tired Knicks, but the separation will hinder the point total.

Prediction

Knicks 107, Spurs 104

Moneyline (ML)

The Spurs have lost nine of their last 10 games while the Knicks have lost seven of their last 10. At least, New York has played a bit better at home while San Antonio has had trouble in the fourth quarter of almost every game during this bad spell. The Spurs have lost eight straight games during their current run.

Our pick is with the KNICKS (+110).

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on New York returns a profit of $11.00 with an outright win.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Neither team has covered spreads well this year, but New York is 3-4 against the spread at home. San Antonio is 2-6 ATS on the road while falling nearly four points below the cover line.

This makes the choice somewhat easier. Back NEW YORK (+1.5, -105). The Knicks can win this outright in a close game.

Over/Under (O/U)

The projected total is set at 220.5. The Knicks average just 101.9 points for per game, with the Spurs averaging 112.9 points per game. It could get dicey but the UNDER (-125) is the better play.

Ben Simmons hit his first official 3-pointer and NBA fans had lots of jokes

Ben Simmons’ first 3-pointer with the Titanic song is pretty good.

Ben Simmons, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 NBA draft, did the once unthinkable Wednesday night as he launched a shot from behind the 3-point line and by golly the darn thing went through the hoop.

Yup, Simmons finally hit the first 3-pointer of his NBA career Wednesday night against the New York Knicks (because of course the Knicks allowed this history to happen).

Simmons hit one 3-pointer during a preseason game against a team from China, which made us all wonder if he’d be able to add this shot to his game this year. But now he has an official 3-pointer under his belt, which who knows how much that could change things for him moving forward.

Here’s the moment NBA fans will never forget:
