Islanders at Avalanche projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (25-19-12, 3.01 GAA, .908 SV%, 2 SO in 2023-24) vs. Alexandar Georgiev (0-1-0, 7.75 GAA, .680 SV%)

Sorokin was limited during training camp following offseason back surgery, and Monday at Colorado would mark the 29-year-old’s 1st action of the season.

Georgiev has been pulled in each of his 2 starts so far this season. The most recent of those outings was Saturday when he was pulled after yielding 3 goals in 22 minutes.

Prediction

Avalanche 4, Islanders 3

Moneyline

PASS: No interest here.

Puck line/Against the spread

Sorokin has been a fast starter over his career, clocking a .925 SV% across 19 October games. The Isles’ game analytics weren’t nearly as bad as what showed on the scoreboard in Saturday’s setback at Dallas.

The Avs have obviously been loose on defense in the early going. Expect a competitive battle in this Monday nighter.

The last 2 New York games in Denver went past 60 minutes. Tab the ISLANDERS +1.5 (-165) with just a slight lean.

Over/Under

The last 6 games of this series have seen the Over go 5-1.

Colorado’s 2 games have produced a combined 6 special-teams goals (3 power-play goals scored and allowed), and the Avs have been weak between the pipes.

The coming-back-from-injury Sorokin is enough of a question mark at the other end. Both clubs’ early games have made for a lot of 5-on-5 looks from high-danger scoring areas at both ends of the ice.

The OVER 6.5 (-105) is the strongest play in this matchup.

Colorado won 3-1 against the Nashville Predators on Saturday, improving to 3-1 in the last 4 games. The Avs continue to struggle offensively, averaging just 2.0 goals per game (GPG) across the last 8 games. The Under is 6-0 in the last 6 games for Colorado.

Islanders at Avalanche projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (10-10-0, 2.49 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Alexandar Georgiev (12-6-2, 2.59 GAA, .920 SV%, 1 SO)

Sorokin has dropped 5 straight starts, last winning on Nov. 25 in Columbus. In a few of the starts, a lack of offensive support was the culprit for the loss, but he also has allowed 5 goals in 2 of his last 4 outings. He is 0-4-0 with a 3.72 GAA and .858 SV% in 4 December starts and 1 relief appearance.

Georgiev allowed just 1 goal on 26 shots in Saturday’s win over the visiting  Predators. While he is just 2-3-1 in 6 December starts, he still has a decent 2.84 GAA and .902 SV%,

Islanders at Avalanche picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 3, Islanders 2

Moneyline

The AVALANCHE (-160) are moderate favorites on home ice against an Islanders (+140) side which has been struggling lately. Take advantage.

Yes, Colorado has been struggling to light the lamp lately, and this won’t be a cake walk. However, the Avs are 39-19 in the past 58 games against Eastern Conference teams, and 66-21 in the previous 87 games at home, which is a (.759 winning percentage).

Puck line/Against the spread

The Islanders +1.5 (-190) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return if you want a little insurance, and that’s just too much risk for not enough return.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (+110) at plus-money is a strong play here.

Sorokin has been a little erratic lately, but he and Georgiev are allowing less than 3 goals per outing. Goals should be at a premium Monday night in the Mile High City.

The Under is 6-2 in the previous 8 meetings in Denver, and the Under has dominated lately for the Avs.

The Under is 6-0 in the last 6 at home for the Avs, while going 18-7-1 in the last 26 games overall.

New York Islanders at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s New York Islanders at Colorado Avalanche odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders (20-21-8) wrap up their five-game road trip Tuesday against the Colorado Avalanche (39-10-4) at Ball Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Islanders vs. Avalanche odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Islanders have had mixed results on this road trip with two wins and two losses across the first four games. The most impressive outing came in a 4-0 shutout behind G Ilya Sorokin Sunday at the Anaheim Ducks.

The Avalanche picked up a third consecutive victory with a 3-2 decision in Vegas Saturday against the Golden Knights behind G Darcy Kuemper. Colorado has won five of its last six games overall.

Islanders at Avalanche odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:18 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Islanders +230 (bet $100 to win $230) | Avalanche -300 (bet $300 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Islanders +1.5 (-107) | Avalanche -1.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -135 | U: +110)

Islanders at Avalanche projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (17-11-7, 2.37 GAA, .923 SV%, 5 SO) vs. Darcy Kuemper (26-6-2, 2.46 GAA, .920 SV%, 3 SO)

Sorokin is unbeaten in regulation across his last five starts, going 3-0-2 with a pair of shootout losses. He turned aside all 34 shots he faced in Anaheim Sunday for his fifth shutout of the season.

Kuemper allowed just 2 goals on 36 shots in Saturday’s 3-2 win in Vegas, his fifth victory in his last six outings. He is 5-1-1 with a 1.98 GAA and .938 SV% with 2 shutouts in February.

Islanders at Avalanche odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 3, Islanders 1

Money line

The Avalanche (-300) will cost you three times our potential return against an Islanders side with some tremendous goaltending. That’s a rather risky play, even for a much better team overall playing on its home ice.

AVOID.

Against the spread

The better value can be found with the AVALANCHE -1.5 (-115) on the puck line. Five of Colorado’s last six victories have been by 2 or more goals despite its last game being a 1-goal win.

The Islanders head into this one with just five wins in their last 27 games against winning teams while going 2-10 in the past 12 as road underdogs. New York is also 0-6 in the previous six following a win. Colorado is easily the better play here.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (+110) is the lean, mainly due to the tremendous goaltenders on each side of the ice. The trends mostly point to the Over for the Islanders lately, but the Under is 2-2-1 in their last five with Sorokin in net. The Under is 4-1 in the past five at home for the Avalanche, too.
