Islanders at Hurricanes projected goalies

Semyon Varlamov (14-8-4, 2.60 GAA, .918 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (13-2-0, 1.84 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO)

Varlamov has the 12th-best GAA and 3rd-best SV%. While he has not been the top goaltender on the Islanders, he has started in 3 of the games in this series and played in all 4. He has allowed 2 or fewer goals in 3 of his appearances with his 2.08 GAA and .930 SV% being slightly better than his regular-season averages.

Andersen has seen the least action of any of the 4 Carolina goalies this season, but he has started in each of the 4 games so far in this series. He has allowed 2 or more goals in 3 of the 4 games, while his 2.08 GAA and .920 SV% are slightly lower than his season averages.

Islanders at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Islanders 2

Moneyline

PASS.

The value is better on the Hurricanes’ (-250) puck line.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET HURRICANES -1.5 (+115).

Expect Carolina to close out the series on its home ice Tuesday. The Hurricanes are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and 4-0 in their last 4 at home. New York has scored 3 or fewer goals in each game this series and will not be able to contain the Hurricanes.

Over/Under

BET OVER 5.5 (+100).

While these teams have combined for more than 5 goals just once in this series, the implications of this Game 5 will cause more action on both sides.

The Hurricanes will be looking to put away N.Y. by force and will have a great opportunity to add to their total if they are able to bring a lead into the final minutes of the game. With a high chance of an empty-net goal, the Over will be all but certain.

New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes Game 2 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes Game 2 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Puck drop from PNC Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2). The Hurricanes lead the series 1-0. Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Islanders vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Islanders were on the short end of a 2-1 loss in Game 1 on Monday, and discipline was the difference. New York RW Hudson Fasching was whistled for a trip at 3:42 of the 1st period, and just 5 seconds later Carolina C Sebastian Aho cashed in with a power-play goal to open the scoring.

New York D Ryan Pulock was called for a slash on RW Stefan Noesen at 1:40 of the 2nd period, and Noesen stepped up and scored on the man advantage just 47 seconds later to give the Canes a 2-0 lead.

That goal stood up as the game-winning tally, as Pulock avenged himself with a goal in the 2nd period to slice the lead in half. That put a bow on the scoring and was as close as New York could get.

Islanders at Hurricanes Game 2 projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (31-22-7, 2.34 GAA, .924 SV%, 6 SO – regular season) vs. Antti Raanta (21-11-1, 2.48 GAA, .903 SV%, 1 SO – regular season)

Sorokin did enough to keep his team in the game, stopping 35 of 37 shots. The Russian netminder never allowed a 5-on-5 goal, stopping 31 shots in even-strength situations.

Raanta was the surprise starter in Game 1 over G Frederik Andersen, as head coach Rod Brind’Amour obviously liked the way Raanta played down the stretch as well as in last season’s playoff run. Raanta turned aside 25 of the 26 shots he faced for his 7th career postseason win.

Islanders at Hurricanes Game 2 picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Islanders 2

Moneyline

The HURRICANES (-175) are a little on the expensive side, but Carolina has been money at home in recent seasons in the postseason.

Carolina went 7-1 last season on home ice in the playoffs, only losing Game 7 in the second round to the New York Rangers.

The Islanders have dropped 4 in a row on the road, including 2 trips to Raleigh.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Islanders +1.5 (-190) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return if you want a little insurance and think this will be another 1-goal game.

I have a feeling we’re going to see a close contest and it wouldn’t be surprising if we needed extra time. However, this is too high of a price to pay with very little reward.

PASS.

Over/Under

I am looking for the Over/Under 5 to land right on the number.

This is a very low total, so I’d lean Over 5 (-135) if anything, but that’s quite a hefty price tag for a total and I have a feeling we’ll see a slight uptick in scoring. We definitely won’t see a total of 6 or more goals, so there is no point in risking it.

PASS.

New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes Game 1 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes Game 1 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders (42-31-9) visit the Carolina Hurricanes (47-21-14) on Monday for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Puck drop from PNC Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Islanders vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Islanders qualified for the top Wild-Card spot, edging the Florida Panthers by a single point.

New York posted a dominant 6-2 win in Carolina in the 1st meeting on Oct. 28. However, Carolina won the previous 3 meetings, including each of the 2 meetings on Long Island. More importantly, the Canes won 2-1 on April 2 in Raleigh as the Under (5.5) easily connected.

Carolina picked up a pair of wins to close out the season, hanging on for the Metropolitan Division title over the New Jersey Devils by 1 point.

The Hurricanes have managed to win 37 of the last 51 games at PNC Arena, which is a .725 winning percentage. They’re also 17-7 in the last 24 games when working on 3 or more days of rest. And to be honest, the Canes looked a little tired down the stretch, so the rest likely did them well.

Islanders at Hurricanes projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (31-22-7, 2.34 GAA, .924 SV%, 6 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (21-11-1, 2.48 GAA, .903 SV%, 1 SO)

Sorokin started all 4 regular-season meetings against the Hurricanes, going 1-3-0 with a 2.79 GAA and .911 SV%. He allowed just 2 goals on 35 shots in the 2-1 loss 2 weeks ago in Raleigh, while conceding just 2 goals on 35 shots in the 1st meeting in late October, too.

Andersen makes his first NHL playoff start since 2020, when he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He suffered a lower-body injury last April and was forced to miss the entire postseason for the Hurricanes. Andersen went 2-1-0 with a 2.67 GAA and .905 SV% in 3 starts against the Isles in the regular season.

Islanders at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Islanders 2

Moneyline

The HURRICANES (-165) have quite a hefty price tag, but they’re well worth playing on home ice in front of its raucous home crowd.

Carolina is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings against New York, while cashing in 6 of the last 8 home matchups with the Isles. The favorite has connected in 4 of the previous 5 meetings, too.

Look for the Hurricanes to get off to a good start with a Game 1 victory.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Islanders +1.5 (-190) are a little too expensive for my liking, if you can’t pick New York straight up, and would like some insurance.

I think New York is able to make this a very close game, and it should cover in a game which potentially sees overtime. However, you can’t risk nearly 2 times your potential return. It’s not a good long-term betting strategy.

PASS.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (-130) is the lean in this series opener.

Carolina scored 3 or fewer goals in 9 of the final 11 regular-season games. The Under is 8-2 in the last 10 games overall for the Canes, while going 4-0 in the last 4 home outings.

For New York, the Under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 games against Metropolitan Division foes, while cashing at an 8-3-1 clip in the last 12 games in the conference quarterfinals round.

New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders (39-29-9) end a 3-game road trip on Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes (48-18-9). Puck drop at PNC Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Islanders vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Isles are coming off a 5-0 road loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning and are 5-4-1 over the last 10. They sit 2 points ahead of the Florida Panthers for the 1st Wild-Card spot and 3 points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are on the outside looking in. The Islanders have 5 games left to punch their ticket.

Carolina snapped a 3-game losing skid with a 3-0 road victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. The Canes sit 1 point ahead of New Jersey for the 2nd seed in the East with a game in hand on them.

Islanders at Hurricanes projected goalies

Semyon Varlamov (11-9-2, 2.70 GAA, .913 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (19-9-1, 2.47 GAA, .903 SV%, 1 SO)

Varlamov came on midway through the 2nd period Saturday after Ilya Sorokin surrendered 4 goals. Varly stopped 10 of 11 shots in the loss to Tampa. He has just 2 starts since March 1 as Sorokin has been grinding away in a playoff race. Over his last 3 outings, Varlamov has stopped 65 of 72 shots fired his way for a .903 SV%.

Antti Raanta returned from nearly a month-long absence Saturday and stopped 14 shots in the shutout. So look for Andersen to be between the pipes in this game. Andersen was 5-4-1 with a 2.48 GAA and .898 SV% in March. The heavy usage likely caught up to him as he allowed 3 goals in 5 of 7 games and at least 2 in all.

Islanders at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 3, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline

This should be a tight game. The Canes are 25-10-3 at home this season, but the Isles arguably need this game a little more. The road team has taken each of the last 5 meetings between the clubs. However, Carolina is 9-4 in its last 13 games with no rest. New York likely enters with a fresher goalie, and I’ll LEAN ISLANDERS +145 to get it done in overtime.

Puck line (PL)/Against the spread

Carolina isn’t a good puck-line team, especially at home, with a 15-23 mark. The Islanders are a solid 21-18 on the PL on the road. However, I’m not a fan of the -175 juice to take New York +1.5. So let’s dive deeper and take the Islanders with the protection of getting into overtime and take ISLANDERS OR TIE -130 under the Double Chance (regular time) section.

Over/Under

The Under is 3-0-1 in the Islanders’ last 4 games. The Under cashed in 5 of Carolina’s last 7 games as well. This late in the season, teams play tighter defense, and scoring is more at a premium. I see this being a 3-2 or 2-1 kind of game so take the UNDER 5.5 (+100) at even money.

New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders (32-28-9) fight to stay alive in the playoff hunt against the division-leading Carolina Hurricanes (46-17-8) Friday at PNC Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Islanders vs. Hurricanes odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Islanders had their four-game winning streak snapped Tuesday in a 3-2 loss at the Dallas Stars. The Isles are 6-4 over their last 10 outings and are 13 points behind the Washington Capitals for a playoff spot with 13 games to go.

The Canes made a mess Thursday as they trailed the Buffalo Sabres 2-0 after the first frame, but they climbed back on top with a 5-3 win. Carolina has been wildly inconsistent with five wins in its last 10 games.

Islanders at Hurricanes odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Islanders +145 (bet $100 to win $145) | Hurricanes -180 (bet $180 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Islanders +1.5 (-190) | Hurricanes -1.5 (+145)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Islanders at Hurricanes projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (22-14-7, 2.30 GAA, .927 SV%, 6 SO) vs. Frederik Andersen (33-12-3, 2.07 GAA, .926 SV%, 4 SO)

Sorokin is believed to be ready to return from an upper-body injury that has kept him out since March 27. He was shelled in his only appearance against Carolina this year when he allowed 5 goals on 40 shots Oct. 14.

Andersen is looking to right the ship after allowing 7 goals through two losses in April. He beat the Islanders opposite Sorokin in that first meeting and stopped 25 of 28 shots in the process. His 2.07 GAA and .926 SV% are both slated for career-best marks.

[tipico]

Islanders at Hurricanes odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Islanders 3

Money line

The Canes have won nine out of the last 10 meetings against the Isles, with the Islanders’ last win coming in 2018. NYI has been gritty lately, and they could easily push this to OT to secure a point. Carolina is 26-6-4 at home, and they’re too good to bet against with Sorokin coming back with potential rust.

Take the chalky HURRICANES (-180).

Against the spread

There isn’t much value in taking the Islanders +1.5, even though we’re pegging them to lose by a goal. Conversely, the Canes have been too inconsistent to count on putting this one away convincingly. PASS.

Over/Under

There have been 6 goals scored in four of the last six meetings between these two squads, and the Over is 4-1 in the last five in Carolina. It could go either way, and the evenly priced totals reflect that.

We’re going to lean Over here because Sorokin, as good as he has been all year, allowed 5 goals to the Canes already once this season and he’s returning from a lengthy layoff. Take the OVER 5.5 (-110).
