Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens (9-33-7) travel to meet the New York Islanders (18-20-6) Sunday at UBS Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Canadiens vs. Islanders odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Canadiens are coming off a rare win against a contender as they topped the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in overtime Thursday behind G Sam Montembault. That snapped a 10-game losing skid dating back to Jan. 18, and an eight-game pointless streak.

The Islanders posted a 4-1 victory against the Boston Bruins Thursday as they snapped a three-game slide of their own. New York pushed against the total, but the Over is still 3-1-1 across its last five games overall.

Canadiens at Islanders projected goalies

Andrew Hammond (6-2-3, 2.44 GAA, .908 SV%, 3 SO – 2021-22 Iowa Wild – AHL) vs. Ilya Sorokin (15-11-5, 2.46 GAA, .921 SV%, 4 SO)

Hammond, acquired from the Minnesota Wild, is confirmed to make his first NHL start since the 2017-18 season when he was with the Colorado Avalanche. He was sharp at Iowa in the AHL, posting three shutouts in 11 appearances.

Sorokin slapped the brakes on a three-game losing streak, turning aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced in a win over the Boston Bruins Thursday. He had allowed 3 or more goals in four straight outings prior to the win.

Canadiens at Islanders odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Canadiens 3, Islanders 2

Money line

The CANADIENS (+210) are worth a look with a chance to more than double up your initial stake. It’s a tall order against the likes of a goalie like Sorokin, but if you’re going to get him, it’s now. The Islanders (-280) are just way too expensive anyway, especially for a team with just one win in its last four outings.

Against the spread

The CANADIENS +1.5 (-122) aren’t out of line if you don’t like them straight up and would like a little bit of insurance. They’re coming off a solid victory over the Blues, but this is a team with a single digit in the win column still. It makes sense not to jump right in on both feet for a money line bet. Still, that’s where there is better value against another struggling team.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-122) is a good play in this matinee affair on The Island. An Under wager goes against the trends for the Habs and the trends in this series.

However, the Under is 17-6-3 in the last 26 at home for the Isles and 9-4-1 in their past 14 as favorites. The biggest concern is Hammond, who gets his first NHL start in several years. He could be great, and full of adrenaline, or he could fold like a tent.

New York Islanders at Vancouver Canucks odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s New York Islanders at Vancouver Canucks odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders (16-17-6) travel to meet the Vancouver Canucks (21-20-6) Wednesday at Rogers Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Islanders vs. Canucks odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Islanders were blanked 3-0 at home by the Seattle Kraken prior to the All-Star break last Wednesday. New York has dropped three of its last four games, all three against Western Conference teams.

The Canucks picked up a 5-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes Tuesday in the front end of a back-to-back. Vancouver has alternated wins and losses in its last six outings.

Islanders at Canucks projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (13-8-5, 2.31 GAA, .924 SV%, 4 SO) vs. Jaroslav Halak (2-4-2, 2.40 GAA, .918 SV%)

Sorokin has been on fire since the ball dropped to ring in 2022. He has won six of his last seven starts since flipping the calendar from 2021, including two wins in three outings against Western Conference teams.

Halak may get the starting nod after Thatcher Demko started the front end of the home-and-home Tuesday. The veteran Halak picked up his first victory Jan. 31 after a month-long layoff, allowing just 1 goal on 21 shots at Chicago.

Islanders at Canucks odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 3, Canucks 1

Money line

The ISLANDERS (-120) look to redeem themselves on the road after a stunning 3-0 loss to the cellar-dwelling expansion Kraken before the break. The good news is that the star goalie Sorokin should be back in the blue ice, and he has really stood on his head over the past five weeks of play.

Against the spread

The ISLANDERS -1.5 (+210) is a risky play since New York has struggled with four losses in the past six outings. Still, Sorokin should be able to keep the Canucks down and the Isles might play with a little extra intensity facing Halak, a former Islanders backstop.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-150) is a strong play, as the Under has cashed in 10 of the past 13 games for the Islanders and is 5-2 in Sorokin’s last seven assignments. The Over cashed in Tuesday’s game for the Canucks, but the Under is 6-3 across their past nine outings.

Seattle Kraken at New York Islanders odds, picks and prediction

The Seattle Kraken (14-27-4) travel to meet the New York Islanders (16-16-6) Wednesday at UBS Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Kraken vs. Islanders odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Kraken put up a strong fight in Boston Tuesday, but fell 3-2 against the heavily favored Bruins. The Kraken have dropped two in a row after opening the road trip with a 2-1 win at Pittsburgh in overtime.

The Islanders also played last night, pounding the Ottawa Senators by a 4-1 count. Despite the win, New York is still just 2-3 across the past five games, all at home.

Kraken at Islanders projected goalies

Philipp Grubauer (11-17-4, 3.20 GAA, .885 SV%) vs. Semyon Varlamov (3-8-1, 2.61 GAA, .915 SV%)

Grubauer was playing at a Vezina level last season, but it’s a long fall from the mountaintop in Colorado to an expansion team in Seattle. He has still won four of his past six starts, showing signs of life lately.

Varlamov has dropped three of his past four starts, falling well behind Ilya Sorokin on the team’s depth chart. But the backup will get the nod after Sorokin posted the victory in the front end of the back-to-back.

Varlamov is looking for his first win against a Western Conference team this season, going 0-4-1 with a 2.81 GAA and .907 SV% in his previous action.

Kraken vs. Islanders odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Kraken 3, Islanders 2

Money line

The KRAKEN (+133) are worth a roll of the dice as live ‘dogs, as Varlamov just cannot get out of his own way lately. And after a slow start to the season, Grubauer has started to regain some of his form lately. Both teams are likely to be tired after a back-to-back situation for each side, so expect a lot of sloppy hockey.

Against the spread

The Kraken +1.5 (-190) will cost you nearly two times your potential return on the puck line. That’s too expensive if you want a little insurance and don’t trust them. Just play the money line straight up as it’s a much better value.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-112) is worth a small-unit play, mainly because of the back-to-back situation for both teams, particularly Seattle. In fact, the Under is 4-1 in the past five games for the Kraken when playing on no rest. The Under is also 8-2 across the past 10 games for Seattle.

New York Islanders at New York Rangers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s New York Islanders at New York Rangers NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The New York Islanders and New York Rangers open their 2021 NHL regular season against each other Thursday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at Madison Square Garden. Below, we analyze the Islanders-Rangers NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Islanders at Rangers: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 11:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Islanders -110 (bet $110 to win $100) | Rangers -105 (bet $105 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Islanders -1.5 (+230) | Rangers +1.5 (-295)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Islanders at Rangers: Projected starting goalies

Semyon Varlamov (19-14-6, 2.62 GAA, .914 SV%) vs. Igor Shesterkin (10-2-0, 2.52 GAA, .932 SV%)

Varlamov is confirmed to start over rookie Ilya Sorokin, but that will be a battle to watch all season. Varlamov really struggled against the rival Rangers last season. He was 0-2-1 with a 4.64 GAA and .857 SV% in three games.

Shesterkin and Alexandar Georgiev will hold down the fort, as veteran and fan-favorite Henrik Lundqvist left via free agency. Shesterkin showed in glimpses that he is equal to the task, but it will be interesting to see how he responds over a full season. He did not face the Islanders in 2019-20.

Islanders at Rangers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rangers 5, Islanders 4

Money line (ML)

The RANGERS (-105) are actually short underdogs on their home ice, but really the oddsmakers are considering this a coin-flip game in the opener. New York not only has the exciting rookie backstop Shesterkin in the crease, but Alexis Lafreniere, the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, makes his debut.

Offense shouldn’t be a problem for the Rangers, as the rookie joins last season’s second-overall pick Kaapo Kakko, Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad. Look for the home side to edge out the Islanders in this first of many battles this season.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Rangers (+1.5, -295) are not worth the risk of nearly three times your potential return for just a little insurance. Over the long-term it’s just not a good strategy. Simply take the money line and enjoy.

AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6 (-105) might be my favorite play on the entire NHL card for Thursday. Varlamov really struggled against the Blueshirts in 2019-20, and this season’s New York offense might actually be a little better. This is going to be a fun game to watch, and the Over should come in rather easily.
