Photos from Notre Dame’s home loss to Syracuse

The Orange sweep the Irish for the regular season.

Notre Dame lost on the road to Syracuse on New Year’s Eve to begin ACC play. The Irish met the Orange again Thursday, this time in South Bend. The change in venue turned out not to matter. The Orange broke a 51-all tie after the third quarter to outscore the Irish, 28-14, in the fourth, and win, 79-65.

While the Irish (14-4, 5-3) are ranked 15th and the Orange (17-2, 7-1) are 22nd, the Orange have shown twice this season that they have the Irish’s number. If these programs face other again in the ACC Tournament or, God forbid, the NCAA Tournament, we know who has the edge. Unfortunately, it’s not the Irish.

Dyaisha Fair played the entire game for the Orange and led all scorers with 25 points, including four 3-pointers. Alaina Rice scored 19 points, and Georgia Woolley added 12 while coming within a rebound of a double-double. Kyra Wood grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

[autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag] led the Irish with 23 points, four assists and three steals while making all eight of her free throws. [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag] scored 14 points, and [autotag]Maddy Westbeld[/autotag] had 10 points and seven rebounds before fouling out. Hidalgo and Citron both picked four fouls of their own.

Here are some images from the defeat:

Notre Dame’s Risch out for season; still no updates on Miles, Citron

Tough break for the freshman.

There’s a lot of excitement surrounding [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag], who just won her sixth ACC Rookie of the Week award. That means it’s easy to forget that Notre Dame has another freshman guard. However, [autotag]Emma Risch[/autotag]’s season already is over.

Risch, who hasn’t played since Nov. 29 at Tennessee, has been sidelined for the season because of upcoming hip surgery according to [autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag]. However, she is expected to retain her entire college eligibility:

Between Risch’s news and no updates on [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] or [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag] either, it really raises the question on how much longer the Irish can survive having a shorthanded roster. The New Year’s Eve loss at Syracuse that began ACC play had to be a sobering experience for everybody, and one has to wonder if that game would have played out differently with a healthier group.

Risch’s season ends having averaged 4.6 points and 3.1 rebounds over seven games. Her best game was a 16-point, five-rebound outing Nov. 21 against Chicago State. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for her.

Packers QB Jordan Love dazzles again in holiday spotlight

Jordan Love, the Holiday King. The Packers QB was once again terrific on New Year’s Eve vs. the Vikings.

No one has embraced the holiday spirit during the 2023 NFL season quite like Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love, who led his team to big-time wins on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

In victories on the road against the Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings during the holidays, Love threw eight touchdown passes without an interception and rushed for two more touchdowns. He had a passer rating over 100.0 in all three games and led the Packers to 95 points, or 31.7 points per game.

Against the Vikings in a must-win game on Sunday night, Love threw touchdown passes of 33 yards and 25 yards to Jayden Reed in the first half, rushed for a 2-yard touchdown and then found Bo Melton for a 9-yard touchdown to put the game away in the second half.

“I think he’s playing at an incredibly high level,” coach Matt LaFleur said after the 33-10 win over the Vikings.

Love completed 24 of 33 passes, good for a completion percentage of 72.7. He averaged 7.8 yards per attempt, didn’t have a turnover or take a sack and finished with a passer rating of 125.3, his second highest of the season and his ninth game overall this season over 100.0.

Love has been red hot over the last two months. In his last seven starts, Love has six games with multiple touchdown passes, zero interceptions and a passer rating over 100.0. The Packers went 5-1 in those six games.

Here are some highlights from Love’s big-time performance on Sunday night:

Love now has 30 touchdown passes and four rushing touchdowns. He’s one of only four quarterbacks with at least 34 total touchdowns entering Week 18, joining Josh Allen (42), Jalen Hurts (38) and Dak Prescott (34).

Here’s Love on the holidays in 2023:

Holiday Result Cmp/Att Yards TD/INT Passer rating
Thanksgiving W, 29-22 at DET 22/32 268 3/0 125.5
Christmas Eve W, 33-30 at CAR 17/28 219 2/0 109.1
New Year’s Eve W, 33-10 at MIN 24/33 256 3/0 125.3
Totals 3-0 63/93 743 8/0 120.5

Love and the Packers finish the 2023 season at home against the Chicago Bears. Next Sunday might not be a holiday, but it will feel like one if the Packers can take down the Bears and clinch a playoff spot.

Twitter reacts to Chiefs winning eighth-straight AFC West title

Twitter reacted to the #Chiefs’ accomplishment of clinching their eighth-straight AFC West title after Sunday’s victory over the #Bengals.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ run of dominance in the AFC West is the stuff of legend, and with their win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17, the team has officially won its eighth-straight division title.

In a season where the reigning Super Bowl champions have looked more like pretenders than contenders, the remarkable streak’s continuation is a good sign for Kansas City’s future.

The Chiefs’ ticket to the playoffs is officially punched heading into the final week of the regular season, and with the momentum built from their win over Cincinnati, the team may be able to parlay their victory into a hot streak just in time for the postseason.

Kansas City’s outstanding accomplishment on New Year’s Eve seemed to take the edge off for fans on social media who have been frustrated by the Chiefs’ losses in recent weeks.

Check out some of Twitter’s top reactions to Kansas City’s historic win over the Bengals:

Notre Dame’s Sonia Citron out ‘a few weeks’ with injury

We now know the extent of Notre Dame guard Sonia Citron’s injury, and it appears that we will see her again soon.

We now know the extent of Notre Dame guard [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag]’s injury, and it appears that we will see her again soon.

Late in the first quarter during the NBC broadcast of the Irish’s Shamrock Classic against Illinois in Washington, Citron was shown with her leg in a brace and elevated across multiple seats on the Irish’s bench. Fortunately, the situation doesn’t seem particularly dire as a rough prognosis for her return was given:

After the Irish finished a win, [autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag] gave a more specific update:

Given this timetable, we’ll see if Citron will be out for the remainder of nonconference play except for the Jan. 27 game at UConn. The Irish begin ACC play New Year’s Eve at Syracuse, so that seems to be far out enough that it could be a target date for Citron’s return. Hopefully, she’s back sooner, but this is not something you want to rush, especially with [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] dealing with her own similar injury.
